The Secret is out . . . second season of 'TSLOTAT' more bizarre than usual

Shailenewoodley_secrelifeoftheamericanteenager_240 "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" returns for a second season Monday night at 8 p.m. on ABC Family. (Yes ABC Family is calling it the second season even though the DVD that was just released was also called the second season. But that was really the second half of the first season. See the seasons are just as silly as the show.)

I know it feels like this is a preposterous statement, but the return is more bizarre than usual. As you know Amy (Shailene Woodley) has had her baby. So this season will be about raising her son while going to school and trying to be a typical teenager. The opening hour spends an uncomfortable about of time talking about how Amy's breasts have changed now that she's nursing. I mean nearly every character has a conversation about it while Amy is suddenly wearing low cut outfits. Like I said, it's odd and awkward even for this show.

This does also appear to be the role reversal season -- where the parents start acting like their adolescent children were last season. Ben's dad is the one suddenly in love (with a character we've seen before). One of the moms finds herself unexpectedly pregnant (I think you know who but just in case I won't spoil it).

Many of the teenagers have swapped personalities as well. It's now Grace (Megan Park) who doesn't think it's a big deal to have sex and Adrian (Francia Raisa) who is trying to convince her otherwise. To me, and maybe I'm reading too much into it, I thought the show also implied drastic consequences as a result of having sex. (Yes more dramatic than having a baby at 15).

There's a big twist coming at the end of the episode that is foreshadowed with little subtlety. At one point, I actually paused my TV and said out loud, "Oh they are totally going to . . . . before the episode is over." I think you'll know the moment when you see it.

In the past, I've talked about how I couldn't stop watching no matter how outlandish the show became -- that it was my ridiculous guilty pleasure. But I think after the premiere I may be able to cut the cord. I'm not making any promises , of course, because I am strangely and inexplicably drawn to this show.  I'll be curious to hear what you think after you've watched Monday night's premiere.

Grey's Anatomy

So the big news this week is that Katherine Heigel is in (at least for a little while) and T.R. Knight is out for the next season of "Grey's Anatomy." I don't think this is any huge surprise. We've know for awhile that Knight wanted off the show and that Heigel had recently made statements about wanting to stay on the show. Plus many of us read a lot into the fact that Izzie was still on the elevator but George was not (as in he had already crossed over to the other side) at the end of the episode. It would have been a little much, even for "Grey's," to kill off two characters.

Personally I'm going to miss George on the show. Well first and second season George before his character went off the rails and then so far off the rails he was hardly on the show any more. To me, I kind of think the Izzie character is beyond redemption. I'm not that interested in watching what she's up to anymore.

How about you? How are you feeling about these recent developments in the world of "Grey's Anatomy?"

Quotes of the Week

"I cannot have people dying every time I confide in you." Sookie to Bill on "True Blood."

"I think I speak for Leo when I tell you we've been preparing for this moment since we were 13." Detective Eric Delahoy when Detective Allison Beaumont asks him to review porn tapes on "The Unusuals." I'm going to miss this show. And I hate that we got no closure on what was going to happen to Delahoy.

"Or maybe we could just go 90210 classic and burn down Frannie's float Emily Valentine style." Casey to Ashleigh on "Greek." Thanks to Kev for the quote.

Exchange of the Week

"You used to be this focused driven person. When did you become this girl? Someone who sits around pining and making lists and second guessing your choices. Paging Dr Grey" Ashleigh to Casey on "Greek" when Casey is lamenting choosing between Max and Cappie:

"Ash." Casey

"No, wait, you are more like Joey Potter" Ashleigh

"Well, OK, I get the point." Casey:

"No, you're worse. You're the f-word." Ashleigh

"Don't say it." Casey

"Felicity" Ashleigh:

"You bitch." Casey Thanks to David for one of the best TV exchanges ever.

That is all for today. Thanks so much for posting why you fell in love with TV in Wednesday's column. I had such fun reading through the responses. We'll have more fun topics like that this summer. Don't forget to watch "Eli Stone" this Saturday. I'm back on Monday to talk about the new series "Make It or Break It," the return of "The Cleaner" and the new Bravo show "NYC Prep." Also next week I'll talk about the new series "The Philanthropist" and have the results of the 2009 Amy Awards (don't forget to vote!) Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week. Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Have a wonderful weekend and a Happy Father's Day. Talk to you on Monday.

Greek quotes were hillarious. I adore that show.

Still can't believe Amy that you are watching that rubbish called The Secret Life of the American Teenager...

I've been waiting for months for Secret Life. Wahoo.

About Grey's, I think whoever dies, we just lose. I don't want to see a mopey hospital. I don't want funerals or crying or anything. I mean, I am sure that we'll come back after all that, but still. People will be all upset. How horrible, and horribly boring.
As for Izzie, I didn't want her to die necessarily, but now that she lives, I don't really care to see her and Alex be married. Not a path the show should have gone down if there was a chance of her living.

Ugh, I fell out of love with SLAT a long time ago. But I am looking forward to Leverage and Eureka this summer! YAY!

One of the best quotes ever was in the series finally of Pushing Daisies. I was going to e-mail it to you but did not get a chance to go back and view get the full word for word of it. But it was Emerson responding to Chuck about how convenient it would be if the killer turned out to be the spurned female in a love triangle. Something about how that would be the rest stop in the Alibi highway. It was hysterical and I regret not having the full quote available. It was agreat series ending for that show by-the-way (You had asked).

Please Amy, just let it go. Every moment spent watching or writing about TSLOTAT is a waste.

I LOVED THE UNUSUALS AND AM VERY UPSET THAT THEY CANCELLED IT. ABC IS CRAZY

I'm ready to give up on Grey's. And I never got started on SLAT.

I'm not so upset with the Izzie developments, except that they dragged it out about 50 percent too long, so she's redeemable to me. Dr.Gray/McDreamy is much more irritating by far. And if TR Knight wants to give up a six figure a week job cuz he's not getting enough screen time, well God Bless and godspeed to him. Good luck with that.

With The Unusualsgetting so much better week after week, and the absolute dialogic joy that was Pushing Daisies, I just cant stand ABC anymore. And to see more summertime tv real estate wasted on 'I Survived A Japanese Gameshow', I wish that network would just go bankrupt. (... but I do like Wipeout.. I must need medication)

... Okay that exchange alone has completely sold me on Greek.. DVDs HERE I COME!

I still don't think George O'Malley is leaving Grey's. TR may have left, and I wish him nothing but the best. But I think a new actor will play George after having reconstructive surgery after the accident.
