It's time for the 2009 Amy Awards!
Juliet and Sawyer's romance. Michael and Holly's romance. Chuck and Blair's on-again, off-again, on-again romance. Kitty's almost affair. Denny's ghost. Doug and Carol's return. Donna, Brenda and Kelly's return. Smash and Street's departures. Grissom's departure. Abby's waltz. Walter's cow. Kutner's death. Bill's death. Tony's betrayal.
Learning Stella wasn't the mother. Learning Dylan was the father. Hating Annie. Loving Tim Riggins. Loving Liz Lemon. Thinking "Desperate Housewives" was good again. Thinking "Desperate Housewives" was bad again. Thinking Kara was a good addition. Cringing every time Kara speaks. Wondering if Izzie was going to die.
Being thrilled "Chuck" was being renewed. Being sad that "Eli Stone," "Life on Mars," "Privileged," and "Everybody Hates Chris" wouldn't be back.
It's true. We've been through a lot this season. We've had our differences (I think "Dollhouse" got better with time, but not all of you agree) and our agreements (we seem fairly united in our love of "Friday Night Lights") and through it all you've listened to what I've had to say. Even when I don't talk enough about your favorite shows (see today's picture), you have taken my business on just about every fearless prediction (I was so wrong about who would make it to the "American Idol" final four) and at least tried to tolerate my devotion to the new "90210."
That's why once a year I turn my column completely over to you. Drum roll please . . . . this is the official kick off of the 2009 Amy Awards. For new readers to my column, a quick recap: with the Amy Awards, you control every aspect of the awards. You pick the categories. You pick the nominees. And you pick the winners. Me? I simply tally the results.
This isn't the award show for your typical categories such as Best Actress, so be creative and be fun. To get you started, here's a sample categories from a previous Amy Awards -- Floor, Please Give Me My Jaw Back or Most Shocking Moment, If Loving You is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right or Best Villain and You Bring the Skis, I'll Bring the Shark or Most Deteriorating Show. You get the idea.
First you have to decide on the 12 Amy Awards categories. You can discuss and talk up the categories by posting your suggestions below or talking about it on twitter. But you must email me to have your vote counted. You have until Sunday, May 31 at 5 p.m. ET to email me at amytvgal@zap2it.com with your suggestions for the 2009 Amy Awards categories. I'll announce the 12 categories in next Monday's column.
So let's get this party started. These are your awards so hear let's hear you roar. Let's celebrate the 2008-2009 television season. Send me your 2009 Amy Awards categories suggestions by May 31 at 5 p.m.
Highlights of the Week Ahead
All times listed are Eastern Standard Time for May 25-May 31
It used to be that we had a break between the end of the traditional TV season and the launch of the summer season. Those days are long gone my friends. Now I have a question for you. I must confess that I've never seen an episode of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," which returns for a new season Monday at 9 p.m. on TLC, but I have read the past three issues of US Weekly that have the not-so-happy couple on the cover. Is the show worth watching? Is Kate as bad as the tabloids make her seem? Let me know.
How did Lily and Ted end up with an apartment with slanted floors? Find out when CBS repeats "Dowisetrepla" at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.
I would love to tell you that "Mental," the new FOX drama premiering Tuesday at 9 p.m. is good, but, alas, it's not. Reports of its similarities to "House" are not exaggerated. Chris Vance (he was Whistler on "Prison Break") stars as psychiatrist Dr. Jack Gallagher who treats patients in an unconventional way. Annabella Sciorra is his uptight boss. Jack is like a nicer version of Gregory House. But nothing that happens is that interesting. Two and a half star. Also I keep wanting to call it "The Mental." Just had to share that with people who would understand why.
As we discussed on Friday, it's already time for the season finale of "My Boys," this Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. PJ and the gang travel to Arizona for the Cubs spring training. You can get a peek at tomorrow's episode by clicking here. Now I've heard from many of you who don't like having Bobby and PJ together because their relationship has been boring. But I don't agree. I like that the show put them together and has allowed them to be drama free for the season. It's a refreshing change. And I think the show has been as funny as ever.
In my column last week mourning the cancellation of shows, I neglected to mention "The Unusuals" (Wednesday at 10 p.m. on ABC). This is a show that really got much stronger with each episode and swiftly worked out many of the things that were hampering it. I wish it had been given a shot at a second season. But at least we are still getting to see new episodes. This week Casey and Walsh are assigned to protect a wealthy businessman.
If you missed the post-Super Bowl episode of "The Office," NBC repeats it this Thursday at 10 p.m.
Jay Leno host "The Tonight Show" for the last time this Friday at 11:35 p.m. on NBC. Conan O'Brien, who takes over the show starting next Monday, will be Jay's final guest. I'm looking forward to seeing what Conan does with "The Tonight Show." Not so much looking forward to Jay's primetime show this fall.
Set your DVRs, ABC begins airing the remaining new episodes it has of "Pushing Daisies" this Saturday at 10 p.m. Richard Benjamin and George Segal guest star.
Remember you can now follow me on Twitter.
That's all for today. I'm back on Wednesday with this week's familiar faces and the launch of the summer discussion series. Don't forget to email me your nominations for the 2009 Amy Awards. Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week? Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Hope you are having a great Memorial Day. Talk to you on Wednesday.
