The great TV fake out - 'Grey's,' 'Bones' & 'House'

Hughlaurie_house_290 Gotcha!

Does anyone else feel like lately show's have been toying with our emotions and blatantly misleading us? Let's take a look at the spoilers we heard about and how they really played out. (Warning don't read if you haven't watched "House," "Bones," "Grey's" or "The Office" yet.).

House and Cuddy sleep together on "House:" The season finale was fairly brilliantly executed by letting the audience see everything through House's perspective. And I was surprised. Since House has insulted Cuddy so viciously all along, I totally believed that she would help him detox and even sleep with him after he had brutally offended her and her adopted daughter. But I have to say, despite their obvious sexual tension, I'm glad they didn't sleep together. It makes me respect Cuddy much more and I think is actually more true to her character. And I like this idea that House was unable to diagnose himself accurately. The show took a lot of risks this season and not all of them paid off. But I think this one did. It makes me kind of nervous to end the seaon with House entering a mental health facility. But it means, I'll definitely be watching next season to see what happens.

Bones and Booth sleep together on "Bones:"This one disappointed me much more than the "House" fake out. Although I was unsure about putting these two characters together romantically, I had come to terms with the idea and was curious to see how it played out. I definitely felt cheated by Booth's "Wizard of Oz" trip down fantasy lane. I would rather see what happens when these two characters got together than Booth's version of it. Plus I thought Booth's dream was a little goofy. Sure it showed the characters with similar personalities in different roles, but it didn't say pack the same emotional punch as, say, "The Wish" episode of "Buffy." Plus I was disappointed that the episode still left us without any true closure for Zack.

Holly returns to "The Office:" I adored this episode. I think "The Office" is strongest when Michael shows his vulnerability. And the sweet look on his face when he had the moment to tell Holly he thought they were soul mates and didn't was so touching. I like the fact that he sees their relationship like "When Harry Met Sally." It makes me think we could keep seeing Holly which is a very good thing. And the ending when Jim found out that Pam is pregnant, well that was just beautiful.

George joins the army on "Grey's Anatomy:" I have to say I didn't see it coming AT ALL that George was the John Doe patient. Did you? I had become so accustomed to not having George on the series except for a few lines here and there that I wasn't even fazed by the fact that he was missing for most of the finale. And frankly I get annoyed when a series kills off a character because he or she wants to leave a series. I liked the idea much better that George would join the army and not be on the show anymore. At least that left the door open for his occasional return (perhaps, say, during a sweeps month). If George does in fact die, it's so final and I kind of think the series showed their hand about how they really feel about the actors. Plus after dealing with Izzie's illness all season long, it's a cheat to still leave us hanging about her fate. But my guess is that "Grey's" will pull a "thirtysomething" bait and switch. While we are worrying about Izzie, they will kill George off.

What did you think of "Bones," "House," "The Office," and "Grey's Anatomy?" Talk about it below.

Quotes of the Week

"I had just woken up. I didn't look cute. That's how I knew he meant it." Pam on "The Office" about Jim's suggestion that they get married that day.

"Why did you betray me?" Jack to Tony on "24." Well that is the question of the hours now isn't it?

"Don't do the preppy maid of honor thing. It's creepy." Meredith to Cristina on "Grey's Anatomy."

"I think it's important to tell the people you love how much you love them while they can hear you." Meredith to Cristina on "Grey's Anatomy."

"I'm a bartender. I'm practically a psychologist." Sweets in Booth's dream on the season finale of "Bones."

"Oh, night's deepest gloom washes over my tiny frame." Stewie to Booth on "Bones." Thanks to Barry for the quote.

"Guys this is Mom we're talking about and someone's messing with one of her kids. By my calculations, we lost contact with mom over an hour ago which means every minute we're on this phone call she could be heading up a river into the 'Heart of Darkness.'" Justin on "Brothers & Sisters." Thanks to Ryan for the quote.

"Is it hot in here? Yeah, it must be crazy hot in here, like 98 degrees." Julian to Brooke and her date, Nick Lachey on "One Tree Hill." Thanks to Sandy for the quote.

"Well, how about this? It's The Suite Life of Zach and Cas." Dean's response to Zachariah and Castiel and the Heaven's green room they were keeping him in on "Supernatural." Once again, thanks to Sandy for the quote.

"Some people think I'm Gormogon. But I'm not." Sweets in a nice inside joke on "Bones."

"Nice day. Must be nice to get a rest from all your rest." Charles to Jim and Pam at the company picnic of "The Office."

Ask TV Gal

Since you're such a big "Everwood" fan, I was wondering if you could pop a tiny mention in your column that Everwood S2 will be out on DVD on June 16. Thanks, Grant

Of course I can Grant! Season two of "Everwood" is finally coming out on DVD on June 16. Let's all pause for a whoo and a hoo. This six-disc set will feature all 22 episodes of the second season and 40 minutes of unaired scenes. This is the season that introduced Sarah Lancaster, now on "Chuck," as Madison and featured a pre-"Desperate Housewives" Marcia Cross as Andy's love interest Dr. Linda Abbott. Unfortunately there isn't any episode commentary but I'm so happy that the second season is finally coming out on DVD that I definitely can't complain.

Lay it on me, what are the chances of The Unit, Cold Case and Without a Trace coming back? And when will we know for sure? Thanks! Kasey

Do you know if Bones has been renewed for next season? I thought it had been but then read someplace else it was on the bubble at Fox. Lorelei

Next week is a big week for us. It's when the networks announce their fall schedules. FOX announces on Monday, ABC and NBC on Tuesday (NBC has already announced which new shows it has picked up, but it didn't announce yet which of their "on the bubble" shows will return), CBS on Wednesday and the CW on Thursday. So right now rumors are flying about which "on the bubble" shows have the best chance of coming back next season. I don't think we have to worry about "Bones" at all. The show will definitely be back and most likely in its new Thursday night at 8 p.m. time slot where it has been thriving. In other interesting and exciting news, "Dollhouse" looks like its not quite dead yet. It could still be back for a second season. Things are not looking so good for the trio of CBS's popular but aging shows. My guess is that all of them could be gone by next week, but if I were a betting woman (and you know I am) I would pick "Without a Trace" to return. I'm also hearing that it's looking more likely that we could see "Privileged" again next season. Let's all think good thoughts this weekend.

That's all for today. I'm back on Monday when we return to our regularly scheduled TV Gal columns. I'll have reviews of the season finales of "90210" and "How I Met Your Mother," a review of the new FOX series "Glee" (Love it, love everything about it. I loved it so much I've already watched the final scene three times), thoughts on "24" (Kim is in danger again!) and thoughts on "Lost" (still processing). Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week? Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Have a great weekend. Talk to you on Monday.

WB!

Gotta say, I was NOT loving the Bones finale, but for a show that more often than not hits homeruns with me, I'll let this ep slide.

Can't wait for Glee! I wasn't too pyched about it during earlier promos, but lately, I'm just getting sucked it. :)

And once more, with feeling, "Save Dollhouse"!

Missed you, Amy. Glad you're back. Looking forward to Glee.

Its hardly important but what happened to the awesome TVGal logo?

I liked the Bones ep, except for the last minute. Amnesia? Really? As for Greys, I quit that show a while ago but tuned in last night, and I knew from the first second I saw him John Doe was George. And yeah, I'm sticking w/my decision to quit that show. It's just too manipulative.

Hi Amy,

I agree that it would have been worse if House and Cuddy slept together. I can see why the producers had Kim return. Kim is the only part of Jack that allows him to be a human that actually has emotions. Jack is this tough, emotionless person who has to do some of the most heinous things, but Kim softens him, and makes us remember that he is human.

I agree with you regarding the treatment of the two "deaths" on Grey's. Definitely reflects their feelings for the actors, Izzy dies gracefully in the arms of the man she loves, while George gets hit by a bus! Very funny!

Glad you're back, Amy. It was a long week without your columns!

So happy the Suite Life of Zac and Cas made it into quotes of the week. That one made me laugh last night, as did Dean's face when he broke the statue and when he punched Castiel.

i completely agree with cj. it's like i wrote that post myself. while i was watching grey's i kept thinking about everwood and colin because of izzie's decision to sign the dnr. and then debra mooney showed up as kevin mckidd's mom. and now you're telling me that i can finally buy everwood s2 on dvd? that is almost too coincidental!
my fave dwight moment was when he tried stalling for time and kicked the ball. i was gasping for breath!

Grey's was so amazing last night. I was FREAKING OUT with the George reveal, and then Izzie in the dress! It completely restored my faith in the show.
But I really think it was a cop out. I know all negotiations and whatever are probably set by now, but they can either have them both die, one or the other, or neither if they feel like it. Smooth move on their part.

I don't think I'd mind the whole Booth-Bones dream sex thing so much if the producers hadn't come right out and said that it wasn't a dream sequence. I don't see why they had to lie.

Nice to see Zack again, though. And did you guys catch that Angela's ex - Grayson - played Clark / C-Synch's brother?

Also...does Vinnie's line to Zack about him being the kind of person who'd go to jail for something he didn't do indicate that Booth knows Zack is innocent? Up till now, I thought only Sweets knew that.
