New Year's Resolutions for TV Characters . . .
We watch them week after week so really we know what’s best for them. Here are my New Year’s resolutions for some of our favorite TV characters:
Serena resolves to leave Aaron in Buenos Aires on Gossip Girl: Not that I want Serena and Dan back together but Aaron has got to be the lamest romantic interest the show has dreamed up yet. Plus, is it just me, or does he look a little sickly?
Sam resolves to stay broken up with Tony on ER: There’s a whole world outside of County General, Sam. And I believe you can find it!
The women of Seattle Grace resolve to stop asking Dr. Sloan for sex advice on Grey’s Anatomy: It’s mcgross (sorry I couldn't resist) and if it doesn’t stop I’m not going to be able to keep my New Year’s resolution about the show.
Gabby resolves to lose weight sensibly on Desperate Housewives: Yeah I know it’s probably going to be one Sunday she’s suddenly 20 pounds lighter, but a girl can dream.
Betty resolves to stop wearing bad jewelry on Ugly Betty: Honey, I love you but that "B" necklace has got to go.
Sawyer resolves to keep his shirt off on Lost: Because he looked so damn good in the fifth season premiere. By the way, I watched the first two episodes of Lost last night and they are fantastic. We are going to so love January.
Eliot resolves to cut his hair on Leverage: Because, as much as I like Christian Kane, I just can’t get behind the hairstyle.
Annie resolves to stop whining on 90210: Because if she doesn’t, I’m going to start a movement to send her to boarding school. And if she could stop the cloying facial expressions too, well that would be swell.
House resolves to be just a little nicer this year on House: His crankiness is amusing. His cutthroat and vicious verbal attacks, not so much.
Christine and Barb resolve to get divorced on The New Adventures of Old Christine: It’s a plot line that is not working, didn’t really make a whole lot of sense in the first place, and is bringing down this otherwise amusing comedy.
Dr. Brennan resolves to subscribe to US Weekly on Bones: Love her, but her ignorance about pop culture is getting a little old.
Melinda resolves to buy make-up remover on Ghost Whisperer: I’ve said it before but it just bugs me that the woman wakes up with eye liner, eye shadow and lash thickening mascara. That simply can’t be good for your skin.
Addison resolves to always remember who she used to be on Private Practice: The show is so much better when she’s Addison the competent doctor not Addison the giggling teenager.
Detective Ray Carling resolves never to shave off his mustache on Life on Mars: It screams 70’s and I love it.
Holly and Karen resolve to return to Scranton on The Office: At least for a visit. I miss what they both brought to the show, don’t you?
Dani resolves not to date Tidwell on Life: Because no one is picking up what the show is putting down. No one.
The Walkers resolve to have a family dinner without screaming or wine on Brothers & Sisters: Just to see what it’s like.
Those are some of my resolutions for TV characters. What are yours? Talk about it below.
Ask TV Gal
just watched the last Brotherhood. Was that the Series or Season Finale? The promos said "SERIES Finale." I thought it was coming back. Can you please let me know? On the Showtime website it says Season Finale. Thanks, Karen.
I checked with my friends over at Showtime and the official word is that there is no official decision yet on Brotherhood. I will keep you posted and let you know when I know something.
I think the big twist on Housewives will also be that Susan and Mike's baby was switched at the hospital with Dave's baby and it was really Mike and Susan's baby that died in the car accident. Mike and Susan's son is a dead ringer for Dave and both children were born on the same day in the same hospital... Any thoughts? Brian.
From your mouth to the writer’s computer, Brian. I like this theory and it would be a very interesting twist that would fit in nicely with what we know about the season so far. What do you guys think?
That’s all for today. I wish you all a safe, healthy and happy New Year. I can’t thank you enough for reading my TV Gal blog every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It’s only because of you that I get to write my musings, rants, and raves about television and I feel incredibly lucky. Agree with me, disagree with me, want to shake some sense into me, correct my grammar, or scold me for showing 90210 too much love and The Unit not enough, I always love hearing what you have to say. You guys are the best. A special thanks to all of you who take the time to write me. I try to respond to all my e-mail, but if you haven’t heard back from me, please know that I do read every single e-mail I receive. I look forward to talking TV with you in 2009 so I’ll be back on Friday to discuss my somewhat perturbing fascination with The Secret Life of the American Teenager (I think it's definitely time to start a support group, don't you?). Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week? Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Talk to you in 2009!
Amy Amatangelo, TV Gal ®
Sorry, Amy, I have to disagree with you about Dani and Tidwell. I'm not sure I see wedding bells in their future, not yet, but I kind of like the two of them.
And if you do start a Secret Life support group, well, count me in. I share your perturbing fascination ;)
Ephiny | Dec 31, 2008 11:42:32 AM | #I agree, Ephiny. Dani's got issues, I totally see her hooking up with a guy like Tidwell for a short (very short) amount of time.
Ditto on CK's hair. I almost can't watch Leverage because of it.
Jackie | Dec 31, 2008 11:57:01 AM | #Um, I could be wrong, especially since I stopped watching Ugly Betty this season, but, based on my own historical knowledge and not anything I read, I thought her "B" necklace was a knock-off of the necklace Anne Boleyn (Henry VIII's second wife / Queen Elizabeth's mother) was famous for wearing, especially since they both have pearls around them, if I remember correctly. When I noticed it, I chuckled, just because I figured it was a joke. I wasn't even sure what the joke was or why there was a Tudor reference, but it still made me chuckle. Did anyone else make the same connection?
AndreaC | Dec 31, 2008 12:03:31 PM | #Look at a portrait of Anne Boleyn and you'll see Betty's "B" necklace. (I realized this when watching The Tudors.) Given that Anne didn't end up so well off, maybe it would be a good idea if Betty got a new necklace.
Myra | Dec 31, 2008 12:12:43 PM | #AndreaC, GMTA (great minds think alike), and at about the same time. :-)
Myra | Dec 31, 2008 12:14:28 PM | #I cannot believe you got to see the first 2 episodes of Lost already. I am soooooo jealous. Will you adopt me or be my best friend?? lol
Caroline | Dec 31, 2008 12:56:37 PM | #Given the recent increased entertainment value of the Tudor period and Anne Boleyn (The Tudors, The Other Boleyn Girl), maybe that necklace is the trendiest thing Betty wears! Right, Myra? ;)
AndreaC | Dec 31, 2008 12:57:44 PM | #While I agree that Dani/Tidwell looks to be a short term thing in a cute sort of way and as much as I'm not into all this 'shipping' thing, I have to admit that I would find a Dani/Charlie pairing far more interesting. They're both damaged, and I think that they can be good for each other.
Liz | Dec 31, 2008 12:59:30 PM | #Ugh...a romance between Dani and Charlie would *destroy* the awesome professional chemistry they have. I have the same feelings about Daniel and Betty of 'Ugly Betty': if romance blooms, I'm bailing.
Speaking of Ugly Betty: I'm cool with her keeping the necklace, but those braces have *got* to go. Aren't her teeth straight yet? Damn.
Ephiny | Dec 31, 2008 1:31:02 PM | #ITA on the Gossip Girl resolution. I would also like to add a few others:
Chuck should insist on more responsibility for cases on Chuck.
This would allow he and Sarah to explore their feelings for one another because they would be on more equal footing.
Sam needs to quit sleeping with a demon on Supernatural. Because really, that is just wrong.
Jen | Dec 31, 2008 1:33:00 PM | #Jen, I completely agree with all three of your points.
Ephiny, I'm with you, Dani and Charlie getting together on Life would mess up a really great show. Part of what makes them such great partners is that they DON'T go there. Unfortunately, I do see how someone as such self-destructive tendencies as Dani would hook up with her boss. I do like Donal Logue, though. I just wish they would let him wash his hair :)
I think Sam and Dean on Supernatural should spend a little more time in the South so they can go shirtless... those boys are so yummy and always so sooo covered.
In terms of the SLAT support group, I find that show unwatchable. I do hope that ABC Family resolves to continue the excellent Middleman or at least make the first season available on dvd...
katie71483 | Dec 31, 2008 3:56:30 PM | #I'm totally with you Ephiny on the braces. I've been saying that for a while. I don't remember if she had them in her flashbacks (HS stuff), but even if she didn't, she did at the beginning of the series and it's been over 2 years in real and show time therefore braces should be done by now - especially since she likely didn't get them the day before the show premiered.
Rishi | Dec 31, 2008 6:26:57 PM | #Not buying Dani and her boss for a second. First thing I've hated about the show but it might well ruin it for me if it keeps up.
Oh, I like that one about Sawyer!!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR, AMY!!!!
I would have to agree with Josh and others about Tidwell and Dani in Life. I cringe seeing them together. I can.. I guess I'd have to accept it as a passing phase Dani's going through and really hope that it ended with year 2008.
Faloogaluh | Jan 1, 2009 4:10:00 AM | #Things I wish for in the new year and things I am thankful for. I am thankful for Damian Lewis and Life (and thankful that the AFI chose it as a top 10 show for the year) ( I also can buy into Tidwell and Dani - he is a man in her life who respects her job and gets who she is and cares for her) . I am thankful for Chuck and the Middleman which brought me great joy that shows this fun are on tv. I am thankful that God finally made his way into Supernatural after three years of battling demons and that Misha Collins is the angel. I am thankful that NCIS is the number one scripted show and is getting some notice. I am thankful that Thirteen has a fatal disease on House so there may be some end to the agony she brings to watching the show. Even though I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy, I am thankful for any reason to have Jeffrey Dean Morgan back on tv.
Things I wish for: Fringe to keep getting better. Chuck, The Middleman and Life to somehow make it to another season. Supernatural to get a season five. NCIS to continue to be the number one show. House to somehow lose the new group and go back to the old group and for the show to climb back in the ratings. For new shows coming out - Dollhouse, Kings, Lie to Me (but Brendan Hines needs to return to the Middleman) to be good and stay on the air. The Big Bang Theory to have more hilarious things like Klingon Boggle.
One big wish I have is for TV honchos and ad agencies to figure out how to record tv viewing and actually accommodate viewers where they watch. I for one (I am 53 and outside targeted demos) only like to watch tv on my computer. The only show I watch live on a tv - but delayed by 15 minutes on my DVR to avoid commercials - is Chuck. Everything else is Tivo transfered or on Hulu or Youtube. I would enjoy tv much more and would watch many more commercials (and shows actually) if everything was on something like Hulu. There are so many commercials on broadcast tv that you could get up and make dinner for one block - and I am sure many people do ignore them or DVR through them. A more assured and controlled way to get eyes on an advertiser is to have the short breaks on a network sponsored computer site. Why not distribute it yourself rather than have people DVR or torrent the show. I realize not all viewers have the access to streaming video but that is the way many young people watch ( my 20, 18, 16 year old children) and is the way of the future. I hope that someone figures it out - or a website (hint) takes a reader poll on how they watch tv to get a sense of how viewing impacts numbers.
marenamoo | Jan 1, 2009 4:59:34 AM | #I'll take more shirtless Sawyer. Maybe Sam & Dean can investigate the plane crash and we'll get them shirtless as well!
Kathy B. | Jan 1, 2009 7:00:57 AM | #I completely buy into the Dani/Tidwell relationship. She has serious Daddy issues and even though she's a recovering addict, doesn't mean she's going to make sterling personal decisions each and every time. I think people's problems with the relationship aren't rational but really a form of "lookism." Meaning people thing she is too hot to ever hook-up with a guy like him.
Julie | Jan 1, 2009 10:27:39 AM | #The one thing I disagree with you on is Betty's jewelery. Betty wearing hideous clothing and jewellery is part of the show.
JenM | Jan 1, 2009 10:37:30 AM | #Kathy B, I like that idea. I would also like to rescure HRG and Sylar from Heroes (so I can give up the show nonguiltily if it continues to go southhill). HRG needs to keep that suit on (sorry) but Sylar's clothes could mysteriously disappear and Hurley with his tie-dye shirt, well, he ain't there is he. Poor Sylar.
I think Aaron was sick because he was posion-jean kid on House (yes I remember him. He looks so much like a friend of mine, even with the sickliness).
Castiel-He should resolve to stay forever on Earth and never ever consider changing vessels (If he does, I will hunt Kripke). Uriel can stay too.
Janitor- I kind of hope he doesn't reveal his name. That means Scrubs will end. If they bring really promising newcomers to the show, then I would like it to stay.
Heather | Jan 1, 2009 11:50:07 AM | #I am SO with you on Chris Kane's hair! Cut it off and buy some conditioner!
Patty | Jan 1, 2009 12:04:26 PM | #I'm glad that Aaron will no longer be on 'Gossip Girl.'
I'm living with Eliot's hair on 'Leverage' (I love this new show, btw) .. but I have to admit, I sometimes long for the 'Angel' days .. (remember Season 1?).
Dani/Tidwell bothered me a lot more when it was being talked about BEFORE we actually saw "it." Granted, it is not a relationship that I would "ship," but I'm not totally hating it either. (And I'm so glad that Donal Logue cut his hair!!)
I would like to make a resolution for The CW network .. EARLY RENEWAL FOR 5th SEASON of SUPERNATURAL!!!!
PLUS - throw some additional money into the budget for them for cripes sake!
Oh - I agree ... early renewal for Supernatural, more money into the show's budget AND less clothing on Sam & Dean!!!
Didn't Jared & Jensen come up with some Ghost Surfer in Hawaii scenario - at the most recent Chicago convention? I'm all for THAT episode :-)
CandyMaize | Jan 1, 2009 12:10:56 PM | #Following Kathy B's thinking: wouldn't it be a thing of perfection to have Sam and Dean just kind of waltz onto the beach in the first ep of Lost this month, bickering amongst themselves how they got there (shirtless of course) then just fade off into the sunset with the survivors just staring off after them?
jamie | Jan 1, 2009 3:37:09 PM | #
I have to agree with Amy on wanting Holly and Karen back on The Office. I have to disagree with Amy wanting Sam and Tony to stay broken up. I want them back together, but maybe ER will break tradition and have them remain broken up. I can't wait to see what happens.
