TV Gal Extra: '90210'
I don't want to sound too dramatic but last night was the most perfect television experience of my entire life.
As you know there is no show for which I have more deep-rooted affection than 90210. So imagine being me, saying good bye to the West Beverly gang eight years ago and accepting the fact that that part of your TV life had come to an end. That you would never see those characters again.
And now they are back and we learned that Dylan is the father of Kelly's son Sammy. When Brenda said, "You're never going to be happy with someone else because you are still in love with Dylan," I paused my TV, screamed with delight, clapped, and then did a little dance around my living room. And then I watched that scene about 10 more times. I'm just so happy to have these characters back on TV again.
You know this means only one thing -- Luke Perry is SO coming back to play Dylan McKay. I'm convinced they wouldn't have mentioned him unless they knew for sure he'd be back. I'm so excited.
Also many of you have asked me what I think of the other characters on the show -- you know the ones the show is supposed to be about. Well I definitely think Silver is the best teen character and I like her potential romance with Dixon. Ethan is growing on me. Naomi is the only character I'm not picking up what she's putting down. But I'm trying to remember the Peach Pit wasn't built in a day. The early episodes of the original 9-0 weren't their best either.
What did you think of last night's 90210, talk about it below or email me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. And for my regular Wednesday post, click here.
As first post I just wanna say: Those girls are the show are waaaaay too skinny.
Marisa | Sep 17, 2008 1:14:15 PM | #Amy, I thought of you the minute Brenda said Dylan's name. I too am watching the new show because I enjoyed the old one so much. Althought the new characters get the majority of screen time, I look forward to catching up with the original 9-0 characters. I do like Silver & Dixon and hope they explore that more. The way they are writing Annie is making her unlikeable... she gets on my nerves and it's only been 3 episodes.
pam | Sep 17, 2008 1:19:23 PM | #Amy, you know I am right there with you, i am a tried & true 90210 fan and there were alot of bad episodes in the beginning of the original (but i still kept watching) and I still watch on RERUNS!
Dylan it is! Love Luke Perry in all he does (even Windfall!!)
Enjoy some of the new characters like Silver and Dixon, I even like Ethan, but good lord, Annie is over the top giggly and smiley too much!
Naomi, not so much, but they seem to be toning her character down a bit.
I really enjoy your columns and you can 90210 me all you want, i'll keep reading it all!
Jana | Sep 17, 2008 1:26:03 PM | #Run away, Luke, run!!!!!!
Sue | Sep 17, 2008 1:30:03 PM | #Just a thought...
Now I haven't yet watched last night's episode (and no I don't care that the baby daddy mystery is now ruined for me. I read the ends of books first too!), but everyone is saying Annie is giggly and unlikable. Wouldn't that make her a normal teenager??? All the 15 year old girls I know (daughters of friends, etc) are EXACTLY that way. Perhaps this makes her more believable.
Again, just a thought.
tracee | Sep 17, 2008 1:30:51 PM | #I'm uber excited about Heroes coming back! I really loved the first season, and I liked the second season. I think everyone's biggest gripe with the second season was the slow pace, but if you remember the first season had a very slow reveal as well. It definitely built to something. I'm hoping the writers learn and adapt to us picky TV viewers....I need me some Hiro! =)
Mateo | Sep 17, 2008 1:40:03 PM | #I also was happy for you with the Dylan reveal, Amy. One thing though... am I crazy or was Ethan's house Casa Walsh? I missed it if there was an exterior shot, but that door, hallway and living room are so distinctive!
Allie | Sep 17, 2008 1:40:16 PM | #Oops..I posted under the wrong one. =)
Mateo | Sep 17, 2008 1:41:11 PM | #Okay, I don't have a DVR in order to pause and dance, but I did scream with delight about Dylan. I think it's a big possibility that he's coming back. They are so not going to make Kelly Taylor a tragic character who ends up with no one!
Actually, I love Naomi. She's Brooke Davis Jr. I like her depth and the sweetness she hides. The one girl I can't take is Annie. She's starting to push my Brenda buttons.
I was actually excited that Shannon and Jenni actually seemed to *be* Brenda and Kelly again. They are getting back into the groove and that was fun to watch.
And Donna had a baby! Oh, and was I the only one that got a little irritated about the "I can almost hear Donna Martin Graduates" line? They chanted that at the School Board building--not the high school.
Okay, so I'm hardcore. I'm okay with that.
June | Sep 17, 2008 1:52:59 PM | #Three ways to tell I'm old:
1. I too am much more invested in Brenda and Kelly than I am in the "new" cast.
2. I can't tell some of the new cast apart. I wish they'd throw in a redhead or somebody with glasses or something for me to go by.
3. I hear the name "Dixon" and my mind conjures up Lloyd Haynes' character from Room 222.
Bea | Sep 17, 2008 2:00:09 PM | #Amy, I'm sorry, but I don't think I can watch this show anymore. I tried to like it, but it bores me to death. Even Grandma Lucille was a little eh last night. For your sake I hope it sticks around long enough to see Dylan and Kelly together.
Anthony | Sep 17, 2008 2:39:55 PM | #I was a huge fan of the original and I am loving watching the old characters again. But as much as I keep hoping to get invested in the new characters I just find their storylines boring. Silver is definitely the best of the new characters, but all of the actresses are distractingly and unhealthily skinny. Also, as much as everyone keeps saying this show is racier than the original I actually think its much tamer and cornier than even the early original 90210 episodes. I'll give it time because I loved the original and because I love seeing the original people back on tv, but if the rest of it was on a show with a different name I'd have tuned out already.
Mike | Sep 17, 2008 3:13:57 PM | #As a fan of the original, I really want to like this, but so far, it's terrible. The only scenes worth watching are the ones with the original cast. The rest of the actors are so bad.
POtch | Sep 17, 2008 3:28:14 PM | #Amy, why are you so happy that Dylan is the dad? The way the show portrayed it, Dylan broke his promise of never letting Kelly down again and left her as a single parent. I see that as bad news for the K/D and Dylan fans, but somewhat good news for anyone that didn't like K/D.
Crystal | Sep 17, 2008 3:35:11 PM | #Sammy: "Luke, I am your father!...I mean, son."
Dylan: "NOOOO!"
So glad Luke Perry might be coming back.
Sean | Sep 17, 2008 4:03:21 PM | #I have now watched all 3 epsiodes and I have to admit that the ONLY reason i am watching is for Kelly, Silver, their mom, Brenda and the Dixon grandmother played by Jessica Walter. I am totally uninterested in all the rest of the new characters and anyone who does not have a connection to the last show, the real "Beverly Hills 90210." I agrre that the original did not start off with a bang but at least they were individuals with different personalities and quirks and issues to face at home and school that acted a through-lines on the show. This show's new characters all range from snarky to total bitch, including Annie and her mother, who are exactly the same in tone. The men are good-looking airheads with nothing between their ears. I am not sure if it is the writing or the acting or both. I tend to blame writers in this situation because they have to flesh out a character but the actor gives it their sense of self to the role too so who's to blame? Iam really torn, though, because I want to see what happens to the above mentioned characters but it has been in the press and online that Shannen Doherty's gig is already up and they have not renewed her for more but Jennie Garth will be retained. WTF? I actually would be surprised if a - that Luke Perry would go on the show after watching it or b - it will get canceled before the writers even get a chance to write Dylan into an episode.
Adam | Sep 17, 2008 4:38:24 PM | #I am excited about the old characters, but I admit that this past week I fast-forwarded through all scenes that didn't have Kelly, Brenda, or Silver. I like the older actors on the show (Laughlin, Walters, etc), but I even skipped their scenes.
This will probably be my weekly ritual. I just don't give a rip about the new kids. I would like a show about all the old gang and have the high school people just be side items.
Mac | Sep 17, 2008 5:50:35 PM | #Absolutely could not care less. I would actually have to go into negative caring, in order to care about this show.
Art Carnage | Sep 17, 2008 7:12:38 PM | #I think you're right about mentioning Dylan as the father means they think they can get Luke Perry to be on the show.
I also think the fact that Donna Martin recently had a baby means that Tori Spelling (who has a new baby) will also be showing up some time soon.
Fnord | Sep 18, 2008 2:02:44 AM | #Amy, Would you mind if I asked how old you are?
Lisa | Sep 18, 2008 2:28:35 AM | #Count me in with those who are only interested in Silver and 90210 original alums. Well, OK, Kelly (and Dylan if he comes back) but not Brenda. I really don't care much for Doherty as an actress.
AndreaC | Sep 18, 2008 6:02:50 AM | #I guess I don't get the amount of ink spilled on this site over a show that barely clears 3 million viewers, that would have already been canceled on a real TV network, and really isn't that good. Or the other junk that CW puts on the airwaves...
Oh...there it is...at the bottom...Tribune Media Services...owned by the Tribune Company...who also owns *14* CW affiliates, including New York, LA, Chicago, DFW, DC and Houston...
Sigh...
baturcotte | Sep 18, 2008 6:28:29 AM | #Yes! Dylan.
I also watch for the old characters. I can't stand Naomi though
kirrra | Sep 18, 2008 6:55:51 AM | #I am THRILLED that Dylan is the father. I enjoyed the original Dylan character so much that I've watched Perry in most of his other vehicles - just finished the reruns of "Jeremiah."
But, I , like so many others posting here, am only interested in the original characters. I think I pay more attention to Silver because, technically, her character was on the original show.
The actresses are FARRR too thin. I want them to head to the Peach Pit for megaburgers all around. How can Nat allow kids this unhealthy to leave the Peach Pit?
I'm super annoyed by the Annie character as well. Isn't it about time for her to leave for London and have the next generation Valerie Malone show up.
When is Tiffany Amber Theissen doing her guest stint?
Dylan!!!
romana118 | Sep 18, 2008 7:17:54 AM | #I'm with Art Carnage on this one. I have never cared one iota about the old, new, or future incarnations of 90210.
In your regular columns i quietly skip over the 9021Obsession pieces to topics about which I care. In this instance, there is nothing else to skip to. Sad. And troubling. Is this what is to become of the TVGal column?
I hope with all my heart that this foolish show is quickly cancelled before Amy's column becomes irrelevant to the rest of us.
