The thing is I'm having sleepless nights over 'Lost'
As much as I’m going to miss Lost after the May 29th season finale, I think it will be better for my overall health to have a little bit of a time out from the show.
Because the last two episodes have completely and totally stressed me out. I’m almost relieved that next week Lost is preempted for the two hour season finale of Grey's Anatomy. I had nightmares after both episodes. You know the kind where you wake up and have to convince yourself that you weren't on a plane crash, that you don't, in fact, live on an island with beautiful people who apparently need no modern amenities for grooming, that black smoke isn't trying to kill you and that you never met anyone named Horace.
The scene where Locke found an eerily calm Claire in the cabin was, to me, the scariest and unsettling moment the show has had since Tom kidnapped Walt in the first season finale.
I continue to think Lost is having a positively brilliant season. That this week ended with all the Oceanic 6 in disparate places was a doozy of a cliffhanger. And the way the flash forwards are piecing together is extremely clever – Kate and Jack were together before his "we have to go back" plea. The numbers were still after Hurley. No one was there to greet Kate when she landed in Hawaii. Sayid was immediately reunited with the love of his life. I hadn’t even thought about the fact that Claire’s mother wouldn’t know her grandson.
But why did they have to lie about the circumstances of the plane crash? How worried are you that we have yet to see any flash-forward of someone who is not a member of the Oceanic 6? What do you think the most frightening moment of Lost has been? Is there any chance Sawyer survives? Talk about it all below.
Desperate Housewives Season Finale
Wisteria Lane goes big before they go home for the season this Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC. The rumor is still out there that the final minutes of the season finale will move the action of the show ahead five years. Series creator Marc Cherry has hinted that this means many of the cast members will not be back next season (I’m very worried this means we won’t be seeing Mike Delfino next season).
But we probably haven’t seen the last of Edie. I didn’t really believe, out of all the things Edie has done, that this would be the last straw for Susan, Bree, Lynette and Gabby. Plus the reality is that Bree is preventing Austin from getting to know his son. I thought Lynette’s reaction to Bree’s confession was particularly unbelievable. She’s the most grounded of all the ladies and I would think she would have a little bit of an issue with the fraud Bree is perpetrating. And I’m with all of you who think Bree is being a bit of a hypocrite since she helped cover up when Andrew ran down Carlos’ mom.
And I’m not sure about the show’s fascination with demon children. I’m not really enjoying the Kayla story line, are you? Thank goodness Julie has remained a nice (and yes somewhat boring) daughter.
But I’m still looking forward to learning the details of Katherine’s big secret and seeing just how they pull off the fast forward. Now repeat after me: I will not judge the flash forward idea before I see it. I will not judge this idea before I see it. I will not judge this idea before I see it. Really that little mantra is more for me than you.
After you’ve watched the finale, talk about it below and, of course, I’ll be talking about it next week.
Moonlight
I’ve heard from so many Moonlight fans about the show’s cancellation. And I’m with you, I was really shocked to see that the show was cancelled. Check out this post from my friend Korbi Ghosh. She has lots of information on fan’s efforts to save the show.
Also this has been a very busy week in the land of TV, with surprise pick ups (I’m so happy for fans of The Unit) and cancellations (I really thought we’d be seeing more of Women’s Murder Club, now we’ll never know if Lindsay’s father is okay). To keep track of all the comings and goings, check out this page on Zap2It.

Exchange of the Week
"This guy is good." Bones about one of the singers on open mike night on Bones.
"Thank you Paula." Booth’s response.
That’s all for today. I’ll be back next week to discuss the season finales of ER, The Office, Medium, and preview the season finales of House (this week’s episode was amazing), Bones (still stressed out about how the season ends), Grey’s Anatomy and much much more. And coming in June I’ll have a review of the new series In Plain Sight (premiering June 1) and the second season premiere of Army Wives (the show returns June 8 and I just received the DVD of the premiere, whoo-hooo!). Have a question. Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week or a topic for discussion? Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Have a great weekend.
Lost has really come far since Season 3. The questions are many and nuanced, the action is tense, the thrills and surprises are neverending. I dread to think about who's not going to make it past these final 2 hours...
Other Sean | May 16, 2008 12:34:02 PM | #The unconventional story-telling and the expertise they have shown definitely garners an Emmy win for LOST this season. I'm a huge fan but I still think I would feel this way even if I wasn't. The risk of completely changing the way they are telling stories was a stroke of genius.
Blue Sean | May 16, 2008 12:40:56 PM | #I am most curious about this 'promise' Kate made Sawyer that she's trying to fulfill in the future. (I haven't seen last night's ep yet, so if they've already told what it is, ignore me). I'm theorizing that it has something to do with the daughter he had with Cassidy. Maybe he wants Kate to make sure she's okay, or tell her who he is, something like that.
MK | May 16, 2008 12:42:57 PM | #I feel like you forgot the funniest quote of the week - maybe it was forgotten because it was so much earlier this week.
"You keep disappearing and reappearing, and it's not funny. You're like that show Scrubs!" Homer to his mom about being back in his life again on The Simpsons
Stephanie | May 16, 2008 12:54:34 PM | #When Desperate Housewives does their flash forward, I wonder if we'll see that Benjamin Linus has moved onto Wisteria Lane.
miken | May 16, 2008 12:57:37 PM | #I agree, Amy, Lost has been great this year. I think it has improved vastly since they determined and announced the end date. It helps the writers pace themselves, I think, and not waste time and useless stories (e.g., Nicki and Paolo, I think those were the names of the ones they buried alive).
AndreaC | May 16, 2008 1:00:49 PM | #Oh, and I would just like to add that I'm OK with the five-year jump for DH. I'm very curious to see who will still be there and any new faces they bring on board. I think it's a great opportunity!
AndreaC | May 16, 2008 1:02:06 PM | #Why do you assume Bree told Susan, Lynette & Gabby the truth about what she did? The viewer didn't hear the story she told them.
J.R. | May 16, 2008 1:04:29 PM | #It does seem like since the writers have a finite period of time that they are able to pace the story better. And, hopefully, we'll get a finale that makes sense instead of a quick wrap up that doesn't stay true to the story (I'm looking at you Alias).
Sam | May 16, 2008 1:08:05 PM | #Still stressed about Bones, eh. I hope they left some sliver of hope to keep us going over the summer!
kirrra | May 16, 2008 1:58:13 PM | #I'm also curious as to why they had to lie about how they survived. I'm also eager to find out how the six come together (they're so scattered right now) - and who the final 2 people are that make up the 8 original survivors of the plane crash.
It's interesting that they started the flash forwards way ahead in the future and have slowly worked their way back until the present will meet up with the future. If that happens in the finale, we can assume that the upcoming seasons involved the Oceanic 6 (or some of them) trying to get back to the island where, I'm assuming, many of the survivors are still alive (Sawyer, Claire, etc.) That's my theory, at least!
Tara | May 16, 2008 2:47:07 PM | #I've said this on the Desperate Housewives blog as well, but I don't think that Bree is a hypocrite. I believe that her anger is not because Orsen hit Mike, but b/c he lied about it - i.e. kept the fact that he was the driver a secret - until he was caught in the lie; whereas, Andrew told Bree about the fact that he hit Mama Solis right away. Therefore, no hypocracy.
I was disappoint in one of the quotes above. I was hoping that Ben would've said: "How many times do I have to tell you, John, my name is Benjamin freaking Linus!" instead of "I always have a plan" -> that would have been stellar.
Lost it really hitting it. Not many show balance humor and drama as well as it does.
I will miss New Amsterdam, Jerhico and Ethan Stone more than Moonlight. I might even miss Las vegas more.
Kevin | May 16, 2008 3:11:05 PM | #Thanks for keeping me up to date on what's happening on Lost and Desperate Housewives. I rarely watch, but I always know you can keep me informed.
c | May 16, 2008 3:30:21 PM | #Ethan Stone? Is that a proposed "Eli Stone" spinoff that I don't know about, Kevin? Kidding, kidding.
JW | May 16, 2008 3:36:57 PM | #For the Familiar Faces/Where Have I Seen Them Before this week:
The Oceanic PR lady on "Lost" was admiral Helena Cain on "Battlestar Galactica".
Nick | May 16, 2008 4:29:01 PM | #LOST is pretty good. But I also have a thought about who is in the coffin. I have decided that the best possible answer for who was in the coffin in "Through the Looking Glass" is Hurley.
My reasoning:
*Jack has been visiting Hurley a lot lately, so when he read about the death in the newspaper, he would become noticeably emotional if it were Hurley in the coffin.
*Jack read about the death in the newspaper, so maybe a reason the newspaper wrote about Hurley was because he was a former lottery winner(in addition to the obvious fact that he was an Oceanic Six member).
*If Hurley did die, then it wouldn't seem so bad if no one showed up at his funeral, because he was at an insane asylum. Maybe no one in his family wanted anything to do with him.
*The order of the flashbacks: Kate's flashback, Jack's flashback, Hurley's flashback, Season 3's season finale. Jack goes to court and tells Kate he loves her still. As a result, he moves in with her. After he moves in with Kate, he continues to visit Hurley(Hurley's flash forward is one of Jack's visits when he is living with Kate) After Hurley dies or maybe beginning with one of Jack's or Hurley's flashback, Jack's life begins to spiral downward. Maybe it gets so bad for Jack that Kate kicks out Jack. Hurley's death(if it actually is Hurley) would cause Jack to want to commit suicide, making things worse, resulting in the rest of last season's episode. If Kate does kick out Jack, because his life is that bad, then season 3's last episode makes sense. The last scene makes it seem like they aren't together. This is when Jack proposes that "We need to go back, Kate. We need to go back!"
I just hope lost does not pull a final episode like last year. I was nearly traumatized by how they left Jack all emotional and upset. I could not sleep and was afraid to watch this season. I am very glad I kept watching cause it has been a great season.
Sarah | May 16, 2008 6:34:17 PM | #"I'm curious why they had to lie." There's never been a time On Lost when anyone didn't lie when the truth would have worked. It's that kind of show. The people are all poor examples of humanity, both on and off the island.
b | May 16, 2008 7:41:35 PM | #LOST has indeed been stellar this season. I think that it started to improve dramatically during season 3 when the producers made the deal to definitely end the series after season 6. They seem to have found a renewed sense of purpose that is translating beautifully onscreen. I'm losing sleep over this show in a good way!!
Cat | May 16, 2008 10:04:06 PM | #MORE SAWYER PLEASE!!
Lily | May 16, 2008 10:24:51 PM | #LOST AGAIN????? Amy should re-mane her blog. TV gal talks about Lost and some other shows...
David | May 16, 2008 11:02:39 PM | #Best season so far, keeping the interest level up with a lot of things to ponder and humor to go along with it.
The exchanges between Ben and Hurley have been hilarious.
Kevin, Eli Stone was renewed!
tallu | May 17, 2008 6:49:05 AM | #Poor, poor, Amy. I used to dream too.
Muwahahahahahaha!
Sorry, couldn't resist. Anyway, eerily-calm-and-scary Claire was a very nice touch, countered-balanced by the eerily-calm-and-funny scene with Ben and Hurley.
But I've got bad new about getting away from LOST. Seems that Naomi's boss from Dharma (who in a flashback or flashforward, has in addition to moonlighting as an orderly for Locke was also the boss on THE WIRE) will play the boss on Fox's X-FILES: THE NEXT GENERA-er, I mean FRINGE.
-- Ben-er Ken from Chicago
P.S. Speaking of where I've seen them before--and THE WIRE--THE OFFICE season 4 finale's "Michael Scott"'s love interest, "Holly", and new HR rep, played the cop on the docks in the 2nd season of THE WIRE (whom McMutrie hooked up with at the end of Season 3). Altho I had to look her up online because she looked so familiar--in fact, at first I thot it was some kind of stunt casting having Melora Hardin playing "Holly" and "Jan". The resembleance was so uncanny I kept struggling to find the differences, until she appeared and I saw instantly that "Jan" is taller and has darker blonde hair.
