I Can't Take the Heat . . . I'm getting out of 'CSI: Miami'

By Amy Amatangelo

April 04, 10:22 AM

Davidcaruso4_csimiami_s5_240 It's April 4.

And it's 41 degrees right now as I write today's post. And there's freezing rain. BOOOOOOO!

I love living in New England. I love the fall foliage. I love the first snowfall, the smell of spring time, and all the other weather cliches.  There's nothing quite like attending the first baseball game of the summer.

But there comes a point every year where I become -- that's right -- all set with winter. I despise my winter clothes. All my gloves have rips in them. My coats have taken on that bedraggled "please take me to the dry cleaner" look.

So perhaps that's why I was so offended by CSI: Miami this week. The glaring sun. The sleeves tops. The lack of percipitation. The horrifically bad acting.

I was transfixed by how terrible the show is. Everyone is posturing, posing and pausing. They talk at each other not to each other. It's like they all attended the David Caruso School of Acting. What is that? Why is it allowed? Has it always been this way?

I think I've decided that CSI: Miami may be the most successful yet poorly acted show on TV. Do you agree? Do you have other shows that you think are successful despite being poorly acted? Talk about it below.

Quotes of the Week

Jamessaito_elistone_s1_240 "All the crazy stuff I’ve been doing because I may be America’s Next Top Prophet. You didn’t make me do any of it." Eli to Dr. Chen on Eli Stone.

"I mean I guess you could write a list of everything you’ve done and do the exact opposite." Stephanie to Spencer about how to get Heidi back on The Hills.

"I would be thrilled for the opportunity to kick you sorry, tanned, bleach-blond, botox asses, back to your tacky mcmansions and your loveless marriages, you got that?" Christine finally telling off Lindsay and Marly on the season finale of The New Adventures of Old Christine.

"God bless you Ted, you’re reading my blog." Barney to Ted on How I Met Your Mother. Barney, we all love your blog now.

"I think at this stage, I think you have got to start looking like a star and I’m not seeing that progression." Simon to Carly on American Idol. Do we think Simon was too mean?

"Take care Bing." Cappie to Evan on Greek. Why is that an insult? I’m guessing we’ll find out in the flashback episode that shows how the whole Cappie/Casey/Evan situation begins. That episode airs April 21.

That's all for today. I'll be back on Monday to discuss the return of The Office, Scrubs, ER, Idol Gives Back and much much more. Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week? Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Have a great weekend.

Like Dolly said~ "Simon is there to tell the truth" and Carly is making some bad clothing choices and she could look way better with some guidance.

I have the same weather feelings living in Florida. "Agh, beautiful weather! Why must you always be here!!!"

:)

No, seriously, the rainy season here sucks. It rains every day from 3-4. It's pretty freaky.

Is I first?

Blue Sean | Apr 4, 2008 10:28:07 AM | #

Guess not.

Blue Sean | Apr 4, 2008 10:28:58 AM | #

Yeah, CSI Miami is horrible. I finally let the show go two years ago because I could not stand Caruso and his posing. Plus I never did understand how a Miami crime scene technician would be crime-fighting in South America?!

And Simon was completely right in his comments to Carly on AI. There are supposed to be people in charge of wardrobe and makeup to make them look their best! So if someone else is giving Carly her look, she needs to request someone else b/c she looks like she's still singing at the local pub.

Erika | Apr 4, 2008 10:34:22 AM | #

i think simon was partially right to criticize carly's look because it's true - she does tend to look a bit uprofessional. however, i'm continously annoyed that one week simon declares that "this is a singing competition, not a popularity contest" and the next week he's going on about their wardrobes or hair or personality. in truth, it's obvious that all of these things are important when it comes to the contestants getting votes - i just wish simon would be a bit more consistent with his remarks.

also, carly is a great singer but she's never going to make it in the biz (again) if she continues to take the comments as personal attacks. you can watch her face fall in disappointment the moment one of the judges says anything less than perfect.

i too live in new england and was over winter about three months ago. ugh.

Caruso is the Cheesiest actor
I have ever seen. Thats why I never watch it!

Ken | Apr 4, 2008 11:12:12 AM | #

Thank you for calling attention to how horrible CSI: Miami is. I have seen better acting in high school plays. Lines are read not spoken; the acting is stiff and wooden. If it was just Caruso, you could overlook it but the entire show is done that way - as if it was intentionally trying to be bad. Occasionally, I will try to watch it and can not make it past the opening tag. And other critics either don't see it or just ignore it. Thanks for letting me rant!

Sal | Apr 4, 2008 11:16:36 AM | #

Thanks for clarifying that we're not supposed to get the "Bing" line. I thought I'd missed something.

Kegboy | Apr 4, 2008 11:22:12 AM | #

Amy.....I feel your pain...I live in northern NH where we have gotten over 120 inches of snow this winter...I am so ready for it to be over....and for CSI Miami to be gone...it is such a shame that shows like that continue and we have to beg and plead to get good quality shows like Friday Night Lights to stay on. Sometimes I think this TV world is so bizarro.

mark3557 | Apr 4, 2008 11:37:35 AM | #

Honestly I thought it was a vague friends reference as I believe Evan's name is Evan Chandler - i.e. Chandler Bing

Johnna | Apr 4, 2008 11:38:35 AM | #

I've had the best and worst of both worlds. I grew up in Mass, moved to Florida for 5 years and just moved back to Mass this winter. So I was soooo over winter a while ago, and this one has been especially bad since it's my first one since Florida.

CSI Miami is horribly great. When your "special guest star" is Jessie Spano (Eliz. Berkeley), you know you're in for a fantastically cheesy hour.

I cannot tolerate The Big Bang Theory. I think the acting and the scripts are horrible.

Tracee | Apr 4, 2008 11:39:15 AM | #

Caruso is the worst actor I have ever watched. The other actors on the show are starting to act in the same way. Who is directing this slop. The story lines are terrible also. What COP goes to Brazil and kills all those folks, returns as if nothing happened. It is awful

Robert J. Day | Apr 4, 2008 11:49:50 AM | #

Thank you Amy, I was beginning to think I was the only one who couldn't take the horrible acting on CSI Miami. I have tried several times to watch that show, but I can't make myself do it. I am not sure how it is still on the air, who can stand to watch it week after week.

I do have to disagree with Tracee, I love the Big Bang Theory, I think they all do a wonderful job of making themselves believeable geeks. I laugh out loud every week when I watch that show. That is the show that I look forward to going home to watch after a long Monday at work.

Hettie | Apr 4, 2008 12:00:10 PM | #

Heh, heh. Welcome to the club. I haven't watched CSI Miami since...the beginning of season 3? I couldn't take anymore of the hands on the hips stance or the constant sunglasses on, sunglasses off. The whole direction they took the Horatio character turned me off. All knowing, smug, etc. Big turnoff.

I loved Emily Proctor on West Wing which is why I started watching CSI. I still like the original Vegas but Miami gets a big fat NO from me. Do people actually consider David Caruso an actor?

T. M. Adams | Apr 4, 2008 12:04:01 PM | #

You watch CSI: Miami for the same reason that Rocky Horror became a cult classic -- because it is just that bad. You can predict all the dialog, all the reactions, practically all the wardrobe choices. How many times will H repeat himself? Will Callie look like a sex kitten yet again or will she finally figure out how to use a barrette? Will Delko make yet another bad and/or stupid life choice? You can skip the whole season and still know all the answers!

CilleyGirl | Apr 4, 2008 12:17:00 PM | #

I've never subjected myself to "Miami," but I randomly flipped on "CSI: NY" for the first time back in December and was pretty appalled at the acting in it. Those two shows are both ones to miss!

I also completely agree about "The Big Bang Theory," Tracee. Since they moved HIMYM, I catch the end of TBBT before it starts, and I just cringe. I'm a pretty big nerd, so some of the jokes are a bit funny, but the delivery is so laughable that they're still not enjoyable.

On a different note, Amy, I've gotten into the habit of using your phrase 'all set' a lot - I love it! I so knew that's what you were going to say about winter! My friends were a little confused what I meant when they first heard it, but they're used to it now. :)

Sarah | Apr 4, 2008 12:17:30 PM | #

Yes, CSI Miami is one of the worst acted shows out there that is popular. But because of that reason, I find it fun to watch.

Brittany | Apr 4, 2008 12:18:26 PM | #

I love Miami CSI. Yes, the acting is not the greatest, but the story lines are amazing!!! Great scenery (great for my HD TV!!) Also, this show has the greatest theme song in TV History... Love THE WHO!!!
THe story lines are great. This week, the bad guys kidnapping a CSI employee so she can help them mask the crime... BRILLIANT!
As long as the storylines are innovative, they continue to play WHO songs, I will be watching!

David | Apr 4, 2008 12:18:40 PM | #

i think we can give most shows a little leeway when they start. the actors need a little time to know their character and their timing. so big bang theory has my vote (think about how awkward HIMYM acting was in the beginning - i cringed every time lily opened her mouth, especially since i was only tuning in for an alyson hannigan fix).
of course, i thought csi: miami was suffering the same growing pains. until late one night three years ago i realized, 'these characters have not changed a bit since day one'. i agree with mark: why do i have to live in a world where veronica mars can't get picked up for a fourth season but 3 versions each for law & order and csi are on every moment of every day??!

lexish | Apr 4, 2008 12:38:29 PM | #

Have you ever noticed that it looks like the sun is always setting in CSI: Miami? That's one of the reasons I stopped watching. I can't stand the golden glow filter they use.

Mica | Apr 4, 2008 12:43:45 PM | #

I couldn't agree more about CSI: Miami! I gave up at the beginning of this year. It used to be my favorite guilty pleasure and favorite of all 3 CSIs. But the addition of the horrifically bad Eva La Rue did me in. I love cheesy acting (ala Mr. Caruso) but an offensive lack of acting ability I can't handle.

Brenda | Apr 4, 2008 12:59:55 PM | #

I know I'm gonna get a lot of smack talk for this but... I can't stand Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segal, or Cobie Smulders on HIMYM. I think Hannigan's problem is more so the way that her character is written, and I think that Segal CAN be funny but sometimes he just goes too far. And I don't find Smulders funny AT ALL. She's absolutely adorable, and definitely has appeal but I feel like she should be on a drama and not a comedy. Robin Sparkles aside, she almost never makes me laugh. Sorry :(
Josh Radnor and Neil Patrick Harris are great though!

Bob | Apr 4, 2008 1:19:57 PM | #

Acting on Jerhico was pretty bad the leads especially.
I have never like CSI Miami, CSI NY is shakespeare in the park by comparison.

But the Bad Acting Parade begins and ends with According to Jim.

Even the show around it (Carpoolers, Cavemen) get sucked into it's wake of suckiness.

The acting is so bad on CSI: Miami that I thought their writers had gone on strike early and the actors were just making it up as they went for the first half of this season. I actually think the hammier Caruso gets the more stiff the rest of the cast becomes. It's like a law of physics. All the actors are sucked into the bad-acting Caruso vortex.

I do have to defend Cobie Smulders on HIMYM. I do admit that they haven't quite figured out what to do with her since she is no longer Ted's love interest this season, but when they give her funny stuff to do she is funny, bathroom shaving scenes aside. I still think the episode where she out bros Ted is one of the best.

LL | Apr 4, 2008 1:39:18 PM | #

I first saw CSI:Miami on "The Soup" when Joel McHale was making fun of David Caruso. I had to watch the show because I couldn't believe how bad his acting was (I thought the clip they showed was altered). After watching the show and seeing how truly cheesy bad it is, I'm totally hooked. It's embarrassing, but I laugh at least 4 or 5 times a show, which is better than any sitcom out there.

Veronica | Apr 4, 2008 1:47:27 PM | #

Eeek.... I also watch it... for the bad acting. It IS like a sitcom. Allegedly it is the "Number #1 show (drama??) in the world". Goodness!

Idz | Apr 4, 2008 2:01:02 PM | #

Succesful but poorly acted?

Heroes. Heroes. Heroes. Heroes. And.... Heroes.

Alex Man | Apr 4, 2008 2:09:15 PM | #

I never watch CSI:Miami. I really don't enjoy David Caruso's acting which I have had to endure on CSI:NY and the original show so I could watch the actors of the other series of the franchise. I wish that at the very least they could have brought in some of the supporting actors from their show to cross-over their own series from the original and when they he crossed over New York's.

Penny | Apr 4, 2008 2:13:02 PM | #

After the last week I've decided both CSI:M and Criminal Minds have finally and utterly jumped the shark. It had been circling for awhile..but the post strike episodes have cemented it in my mind. I think people are just watching out of loyalty anymore anyway.

Alex man: iawtc. Amen. The popularity of Zeroes simply blows my mind.

I live in south Texas. We only have two temperatures: hot and hotter. I miss winter.

Catherine | Apr 4, 2008 2:39:17 PM | #

I live in East Central Illinois where we've had an over abundance of snow AND rain over the winter. It's in the 40's, dreary, and cloudy today and I don't think it will EVER change.

I tried to watch CSI Miami because I loved Emily Proctor in The West Wing. But David Caruso's horrid habit of telling somebody to do something and then saying "Thank you!" in the same sentence reminded me too much of an old boss - I couldn't stand him either.

So I've never been able to watch it.

Bring back The West Wing. :)

What a bunch of cry babies !!! if you don't like CSI Miami change the channel !!! you know the clicker, remote control !!! why dont you brilliant people put on a weekly show and lets see your acting abilities.you just don't get it.

armentano | Apr 4, 2008 3:08:00 PM | #

I love CSI, but Miami is terrible! Worst acting ever! i spend the whole time making fun, I can't concentrate on the storyline!

Mandy | Apr 4, 2008 4:14:23 PM | #

CSI Miami is actually a parody of a police procedural. Obviously the CBS programming executives realize it, since they package it on monday night with four other comedies.

Jeff | Apr 4, 2008 4:20:23 PM | #

I made it through the first season and a half of CSI:Miami before I stopped watching. David Caruso is the sole reason why I dumped the show. I mean hey, I watch CSI:NY even though it is kind of boring but I just can't stand Caruso.

Amy Lynne | Apr 4, 2008 4:36:16 PM | #

To Armentano: Are you offering to sponsor any up and coming writers out there?
If you remove the terrible shows it opens a slot for something good.

b | Apr 4, 2008 4:42:57 PM | #

I love good shows, and I love shows so bad they're good. CSI: Miami is just bad. I faithfully watched for several years, but I found that I just seethed with disgust every time Caruso was on the screen; he and his character are awful. My life is a lot better now that I've kicked CSI:M : )

Gooey | Apr 4, 2008 5:43:22 PM | #

I watch CSI Miami every week, just to laugh at how bad David Caruso's "sun glass" acting is. I will never forget when they were spinning CSI NY off and Gary Senise was in the victims kitchen and it was DARK, David Caruso walks in with his sunglasses on & does his "whisper acting" the look on Gary Senise's face said "Holy crap I won an Oscar and I am working with this guy!!"...Priceless.

Annie | Apr 4, 2008 6:24:33 PM | #

David Caruso cracks me up. I love his horrendous acting, and I can't help but wonder if he knows everyone thinks he's completely ridiculous. Also, I feel the New England pain. Around Feb. every year, I start to get really cranky.

Maria | Apr 4, 2008 6:51:30 PM | #

Thank you AlexMan! And I agree with the poster about HIMYM as well. We keep the crap and let good shows go by. If people would stop being entertained by sex jokes and actually use part of their brain, they may find other things are entertaining as well. And Heroes, hello, jumped the shark, let it go.

sigh | Apr 4, 2008 8:01:38 PM | #

Sorry, but I LOVE CSI.Miami! The photograpy is excellent, especially this year, if a leeetle heavy handed, and as stated previously , the stories are GREAT. And the sunglass thing is a DEVICE, he's doing it on purpose, he's not trying to be Marlon Brando! Much better than CSI:NY, which is led by two stars who obviously dont want to be there (Sinese and Kankeredes(sorry)) The comeback of Brendan Fehr and Callies Stalker?? COME ON, who saw that coming??? Even the Evan Ellingson as Caruso son thing works for me now, with the addition of his evil mother!! The show that SHOULD have ended at its apex last year was HIMYM. Now its jumped the shark!

Weiss C | Apr 4, 2008 8:03:35 PM | #

David Caruso is the worst actor I've ever seen on TV. Who talks like that? If you want to have a good laugh, check out the You Tube clip of Jim Carrey impersonnating David Caruso when he was on Letterman. Caruso is the biggest Douche Bag on TV !!!

The acting in CSI:Miami is train-wreck bad. I've never given the show more than a few minutes of attention in prime time, but I've watched a few eps in late night reruns just for the spectacle. But as people have pointed out the camera work and wardrobe... I suppose it's all about a *style*, and the acting works into that.

The one character/actor(ing) I can't stand is the blond coroner chick. She reminds me of Angela from The Office, but in a disturbingly not-supposed-to-be-funny way.

No, the worst actor is Mandy frakking Patinkin. Caruso is a pale comparison to that cheese ball.

Amy, if you want to see bad acting, take a look at CSI:NY. I cringe for the great Gary Sinise everytime I see a commercial. What in heaven is he doing on that show?

tv | Apr 5, 2008 1:04:21 AM | #

I too am loosing interest with CSI Miami. Not only does everyone seem to stand and need a 10x8 glossy with everseem , but the continuity seems to be of little hope. When the dvd came out i purchased the first 5 seasons and whatched everone for 2 straight nights, than the strike and now it dosen.t hav e the same "somethimg". I don't know what is missing, but maybe maybe another cross over to csi N.Y. whatever it needs please find it fast. I have began whatching msnbc news.

>I think I've decided that CSI: Miami may be the most successful yet poorly acted show on TV.

Have you ever seen a show called "LOST"?

| Apr 5, 2008 5:04:37 AM | #

With CSI:Miami, I cannot decide whether it is the acting or the writing. I think that they are both so bad that they magnify each other. The weird thing about Caruso is that I think he was actually o.k. on NYPD Blue. I think he gave up on being an actor when the the big movie career never happened.

Bill | Apr 5, 2008 9:09:17 AM | #

I just watch CSI:Miami to make fun of it. I can pretty much predict what H is going to say before he does, but that makes it enjoyable for me. But Monday's episode was just too much, the whole scene at the poker table was just laughable and I can't even express how forced and uncomfortable the final scene with Eric and Calliegh.

We've actually made an awesome drinking game while watching it. Everytime the sunglasses come off, on the hand on hip pose, and when H used to say "Mr. Wolfe".

Lindsey | Apr 5, 2008 10:46:03 AM | #

I too Love CSI: Miami. It's so horribly acted you can't help but laugh through the entire thing. My husband I play the "guess the cheesy opening line" based on the intro scenario. I especially love how they solve every crime on the same day - showing up at the scene.

Jackie | Apr 5, 2008 11:42:40 AM | #

AMY: I agree with you and so many previous comments here. I cannot believe that CSI: Miami is supposedly "the most watched TV drama in the world" (according to CBS' ads). The writing and acting are equally terrible. David Caruso's "acting" style makes William Shatner's hamminess seem non-existant!

Clearly, the producers of CSI:Miami have decided that STYLE over substance is most important. I mean, how many aerial shots of Miami's skyline do we need in a single episode? Why does every outdoor scene look like it was shot with an ORANGE filter? Why is the CSI lab/ police department look like it is inside an Art Deco hotel in South Beach (TOO MUCH NEON in their offices!).

I only watch CSI:Miami for laughs. It is truly the funniest non-intentional comedy on TV. Every word and every gesture from Horatio Caine is utterly predictable at least 10 seconds before he actaually does them onscreen. Joel McHale from The Soup occasionally does his Horation Caine impression, and it is HILARIOUS because it is accurate.

Horatio's dialogue in the opening scene: "That was no ACCIDENT... (long pause) That, Eric, was a MURDER!" Then Caruso tilts his head to the side, puts on his sunglasses, slowly walks out of frame... and cue the theme music! ;-)

Paige | Apr 5, 2008 11:45:32 AM | #

Just wondering if any of you ever watched Crossing Jordan. Now that's some bad acting.

Loreen | Apr 5, 2008 1:53:56 PM | #

I do not agree. IMO, I think CSI Miami is still the best of the CSI's including the original. I like Caruso a lot along with all the charactors.

mikeX | Apr 5, 2008 2:53:26 PM | #

I agree, the writing could certainly use some improvement on this CSI franchise. Can't blame it all on David Caruso--he's doing the best he can with what's been written for him.

On a serious and very sad note, two news services have identified Gabriele Huber as the Austrian woman who was arrested last summer for stalking and threatening to murder David Caruso and his companion. The State Department has denied Huber entry into the US thankfully for David Caruso and his family.

Huber now cyberstalks the actor and posts rumors, fabrications and vicious comments on any site that mentions Caruso and/or CSI Miami.

Huber has already posted here as "Vixen" one of her hundreds of pseudonyms.

Amy, thanks so much for helping my subconscious acknowledge my disgust of CSI
Miami..and CSI NY, and CSI LV.!! I swear I didnt know till you wrote it! I think Miami is the worst but they've all gone horribly wrong! what happened? I used to like Emily Proctor but her voice sounds like a helium blow up doll now! wtf?? I dont get the Big Bang Theory, must be for younger watchers..oh, and
I spotted "Bug", from Crossing Jordan, as a DR. on the new season opener of Earl!! dont know his name but recognized the voice immediately! Pretty sick of the Law & Order shows too...they are too predictable! and I dont like Jack mcCoys replacement..he's
boring & sorta beige, I think. and speaking of weather,Im moving from Vegas to So.Ohio...very nervous about the weather..anybody??

liz | Apr 5, 2008 4:54:29 PM | #

Perhaps everyone needs to just change their perception of CSI Miami. I personally have never gotten into any of those CSI shows, but my husband does occasionally and I refer to them as music videos with a splash of dialogue. Caruso's acting is pretty laughable and now it's spreading to the rest of the cast. I think that gambling show "Vegas" ties CSI Miami for worst acting award ever.

Heidi | Apr 5, 2008 6:03:12 PM | #

I finally stopped watching CSI: Miami two years ago. Recently, I tried watching it again, but it still drives me nuts.

What I cannot stand is that the women on the field are always wearing white. Who wears white when they are working around blood? And, why do they never wear their hair back when working with the DNA samples?

That along with the horrible acting should make this show get canceled. It's sad that great shows like FNL's suffer, and shows like Miami just keep getting stronger.

C.Y. | Apr 5, 2008 8:43:58 PM | #

Caruso is a joke. His axcting isgetting worse with every season. Time to pull the plug - ON CARUSO and on the SHOW...

Cole | Apr 5, 2008 9:01:47 PM | #

David Caruso - Miami is not all that good, but you can't blame it all on David.

Have you taken the time to watch the movies he has made? Soem of them aren't too good either, but David IS good. He is a good actor who has maybe gotten lazy. I know when I am in a job for 5+ years, it gets old and I get a little lazy about it. Why can't that be true of David?

It's #1 in the world for a reason; I think the reason is David Caruso.

lacy | Apr 6, 2008 11:08:54 AM | #

You know Caruso's bad acting has become an institution when even the "It takes a full year to produce an episode" Simpsons does a specific parody of your show and it's still relevant.

Christopher Conaton | Apr 6, 2008 1:43:17 PM | #

I used to love CSI: Miami, but stopped watching during season 5, when they started using split screens along with the ridiculous storylines.

I put more blame on the writers, who just don't seem to care anymore. After all, the show keeps winning it's time slot year after year.

As for Caruso, I thought he was pretty good on NYPD Blue. I'm sure he thinks CSI: Miami has gotten silly, but he won't make the same mistake twice.

Walter | Apr 6, 2008 2:47:08 PM | #

You want to know why CSI:Miami is the #1 show of it's timeslot? If you watch the show, even if it's because you want to laugh at the bad acting and ridiculous storylines, you're still watching it, aren't you?

Maracev | Apr 6, 2008 3:11:15 PM | #

I couldn't agree with you more regarding CSI Miami and it has always been a mystery to me that no one else seemed to see just how poorly acted and postured it is!!! All the "pretty" people who never sweat and take themselves too seriously!!!!!!

Susan | Apr 6, 2008 4:42:39 PM | #

In Australia CSI: Miami has a drinking game in honour of how BAD it is. Horatio takes of his sunglases - drink. Wearing inappropritate clothing to a crime scene - drink. Babes in bikini's - no of women x drinks. Wearing number of times Calliegh flicks her hair - drink. Lame cheesy one liner - drink. If you can remember the ending of the episode you are the winner!!!

Bex | Apr 7, 2008 3:29:35 AM | #

CSI Miami is the most watched show on the planet!!!

The sunglasses, only speaking in seven word sentences, the posturing, totally intentional. Nothing to do with bad acting. It's what I enjoy about David Caruso. He's so predictable in this role and we're supposed to laugh at it.

I guess some just don't get that its campy.

I could never watch CSI: Miami because it's filmed with an orange glow. Even though I live in the Northeast (Long Island, we don't get the snow of New England, we just get cold rain and dampness...can't wait for spring) I've been to FL many times, and when it's sunny,it's never ORANGE. I think it's filmed this way so we "feel the heat" of Miami. My retinas can't take it.

JanetT | Apr 7, 2008 4:25:25 AM | #

I guess I can't comment on the entire cast of CSI: Miami, but I have never even watched one episode because I couldn't stand Caruso's "acting" before the show even started. Of course, I don't think Caruso really acts, he just, well, your description of posturing is a good one. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who can't stand Caruso.

AndreaC | Apr 7, 2008 6:03:39 AM | #

Caruso is a decent actor, which leads to a bizarre but clear conclusion: he's deliberately playing it that way. I don't know if he thinks it makes Horatio Caine a compelling "hero" or if he's doing it for laughs, but it's clearly on purpose.

As for the show being the #1 show on the planet, just remember the biggest previous hit: Baywatch. It isn't quality or good acting or plots that are popular around the world--it's a tropical setting.

Yeah, Carly needs to suck it up and get a better wardrobe. Preferrably some sleeves too, I like the tattoos but they stick out like a sore thumb and make her look out of place.

I firmly believe that One Tree Hill (which has made it to six seasons now, with the CW picking it up for next year) has some horrid acting from everyone not named
Sophia Bush or Moira Kelly, and yet I'm sucked in every fracking year. Same for Smallvile (not a typo), aside from Rosenbaum and Allison Mack. How it's making it to eight years and possibly beyond is... well, beyond me.

Amy, you can't have freezing rain at 41 degrees outside.....

Forecaster in Denver | Apr 7, 2008 7:47:09 AM | #

I'm going to be in the minority here and say it was a good episode for CSI Miami. For the first time since the first or second season, Caine rolled up his sleeves and went to work in the lab. And the music during the gunplay/shootout scenes were nice homage to Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time in the West.

Tim | Apr 7, 2008 9:29:38 AM | #

I was all set with David Caruso half way through season 1 of NYPD Blue. How he continues to earn a paycheck as an actor mystifies me.

Forecaster: Things are possible in New England that seem impossible elsewhere. ;-)

Amy: I didn't know you were a fellow New Englander! No wonder I enjoy your column so much...

CSI:Miami needs to be cancelled because the writing, directing, editing, cinematography and acting has deteriorated to the point that it needs to be put out of its misery. If this show is supposed to be a comedy, label it as such.

Trupen | Apr 7, 2008 11:17:08 AM | #

Re Caruso. His "cheese lines" make the show - I agree that CSI: Miami may be (unintentionally) a parody of the police procedurals which there are far too many of. Remember the theme song is "Won't Get Fooled Again" (except maybe all you viewers who apparently don't get it!)

Nothing beats the one from a few years back - at the beginning when a woman's body was found, apparently victim of a shark attack (but, no ...): Horatio: "it was a shark all right ..... (sunglasses) ... The Human Kind." Can't beat that kind of acting depth!

CSI Miami - the "Plan 9 from Outer Space" of series television. Lighten up folks, and enjoy. Great visuals, crappy acting, kind of an updated Miami Vice.

Nearly 10 feet of snow has fallen this winter in New Brunswick, Canada. Welcome to the Great White North, eh?

Hey TV Gal....you hit the nail on the head with the bad acting on CSI: Miami (I like to call CSI: Mindless)......this is why I tune into watch the way better Medium. I can't even stomach to watch Miami in repeats over the summer....

Here is a sample of CSI: Mindless dialogue...

Callie: Oh.....look over there...a clue

Delco: Really??.....where??

Callie: Right over there...as she shines her HUGE flashlight.....

Delco: Oh.....OK....now I see.....

Hocaine: Guys.....removes sun glasses (while outside).....I think we have a killer on our hands...

Alexx: (while stroking dead vitim's hair)....there there baby....how'd you get here baby......you were barely starting your life baby.....what's this baby??...what are you hiding......Hocaine....I think you want to see this...

Hocaine: Now.......we are on to something...

Natalia: I searched the scene (in all of 2 minutes)......nothing...

Hocaine: ....that's ok.....Puts back on sunglasses.......now.....it begins......

Cue....The Who theme......LOL

Sound familiar???? LOL

I admit that I still watch CSI Miami--in much the same spirit that I might watch a very slow-moving train wreck. I can understand why the show is so popular overseas. You wouldn't have to understand English to watch it because it's so poorly written and plotted that it makes no difference what words the characters are speaking. As for the "acting," the kindest thing you could say about the show is that it's highly stylized. The meanest thing you could say is that it's obviously that way on purpose. No one could inadvertently bring together a group of actors all of whom are as wooden as David Caruso. They're being directed to act that way. Maybe so they won't interfere with viewing the gorgeous scenery.

Glenn | Apr 7, 2008 1:24:16 PM | #

CSI:Miami, you are no Baywatch!

Ron | Apr 7, 2008 1:39:41 PM | #

I used to love CSIM!! I watched it for about 2 years, but it got too predictable and yes cheesy. I hate to say it but I can't watch it anymore and I've never left one of my favorite shows- but it's just not good. HIMYM is excellent Barney is awesome and so is BBT. Nerds are funny!!

Lee | Apr 7, 2008 3:18:59 PM | #

What gets me about CSI Miami is the way everyone is still wearing the same wardrobe for the entire show. Even if the action goes into the next day (rarely, but it did happen in this last show). And I'm not just talking about the investigators who apparently don't have time to go home and change. Did anyone notice that Horatio's ex was still wearing that completely inappropriate low cut black dress and the son was wearing the geeky sweater vest (in Florida!?!) on the next day too? The show must blow the budget on all those split screens and CGI.

The Soup does a great job of making fun of CSI!! Hilarious!!!

Joy | Apr 7, 2008 6:58:33 PM | #

I have never attempted to watch CSI:Miami for the simple reason that Caruso was in it. CAN'T STAND the acting and he's ugly too.
I like 'Big Bang' just fine.
I also think the acting on JERICHO was good, especially by GERALD MCRANEY.
Carly needs to hide her arms a bit. The huge tatoo is distracting and her arms are a bit big. I'd also like to see the hair OUT OF HER FACE!
She's a good singer though I think I like Brook a bit better. She's always so happy. I like David C.'s new haircut, but WHY does Jason have dreadlocks??? I thought only Whoopi had them anymore. In fact, I thought Whoopi was the ONLY one allowed to have them anymore.
I'd be happy if Brook or David C. won. Hey, who did the Bachelor elimate tonight?
I forgot to watch...grrrr!

david caruso's horatio is a clown beside william petersen's grissom

alice | Apr 8, 2008 4:47:38 AM | #

I have noticed that since the writers strike ended, the scripts are so NOT up to the par they used to be. Since the 2 eps of Big Bang, had those been the first 2 shows I saw I would never have bothered to come back. Maybe those writers should have continued to write in private as its their jobs on the line too. They need to bring it up or I'm gone.

How does this show keep winning its time slot, and be Monday's #1 rated show?

WH | Apr 8, 2008 2:30:56 PM | #

Umm. I love CSI: Miami. :Hides behind flying chairs:

DD. | Apr 9, 2008 10:59:07 AM | #

CSI: Miami has some truly putrid acting and writing, as well as another Monday night favorite, Heroes. Don't really understand why that show gets a pass on some of the worst writing on television today.

Corey | Apr 9, 2008 1:25:22 PM | #

CSI Miami gets the ratings it does simply by being the best of the three bad shows on TV.
Yes, it's predictable & cheesy but,,,it's still better then whatever else is on ABC and NBC.

reader1 | Apr 10, 2008 11:55:14 AM | #

Don't you have anything better to do than knock sucessful primetime t.v shows?

Martina | Apr 11, 2008 1:55:40 PM | #

Can't argue with most of the comments on CSI: Miami. I guess the addiction could be the very things that are so noticable. Like junk food, bad for you, few benefits, can't stop eating them.

Maybe the affectation for this show isn't the acting as much as it is what they represent... the last of the "good guys." Watching CSI Miami is like watching a WB Road Runner cartoon, you have to have a certain "suspension of disbelief" in order to appreciate it.

My biggest gripe with the show is how they don't dig deeper into the characters, to give them more believability in spite of the cheese. This was approached with Delco in as many as three elements (helping a woman and her son, dealing with being shot, his sister dying of cancer and being killed). Horatio's past has a lot of opportunities attached but the writers just drag it in when they appear desperate for a plot.

When the spin-offs started, William Peterson was quite vocal in his concerns that the original CSI would suffer from the extension. He need not have been concerned, from a dramatic element, CSI (Vegas) continues to have the upper hand on both the Miami and NY counterparts.

I can forgive Caine's posturing because he seems so comfortable in the role. But I suggest that we be a little more forgiving with the cast, as they have to do the best they can with the material they're given.

If anyone is to be asked for improvement, I think it shold be the writing staff. Even Moonlighting, with their last-minute production, had more going for it that the CSI scripts.

And of course, all this is IMHO.

Dayne | Apr 12, 2008 8:48:35 AM | #

As an avid watcher of all three CSIs, I feel I must interject. Yes, the acting on Miami is woefully stiff and the characters are nothing more than cardboard cutouts to fling dialogue against, but thats the real joy of it, isn't it? I too read that it was the #1 show in the world. I remember a time not too long ago when that distinction was held by Baywatch. You want "stiff" acting? You got it. You want eye candy? You got that too.

My roommates and I watch specifically to see what Caruso will do next. We wonder when the sunglasses will go on or come off. We predict when he will shift his weight and look out a window while talking to a suspect. We laugh our asses off at his stingers before the opening "YEEEEEAAAAAAHH!" It is not just the most successful, poorly-acted show on television, it is the most non-intentionally hilarious show on TV. You watch this and an episode of Two and a Half Men, and see what makes you laugh more.

I have figured out the pattern of these shows. Vegas is the realistic CSI, they have poignant stories and accurate science. Miami is the stylish CSI, with their fluff stories and bizarre editing. NY is the ridiculous CSI, with their ridiculous stories (time travel? Really?!) and ridiculous acting.

So give Miami a break, folks. They're just trying to give the people what they want: Beautiful people getting murdered in their island mansions, set to techno music.

Steve | Apr 13, 2008 12:57:42 PM | #

I couldn't have said it better myself, Steve.

Jackie | Apr 17, 2008 10:38:03 PM | #

CSI: Miami is easily the worst of the franchise. It jumped the shark back when H and Delco made the first trip to Brazil and now H makes another trip, kills half the population and comes back with no repercussions? Yep, I'll watch WWE Raw.
