Wouldn't you like to be a Walker too? A look at 'Brothers & Sisters'

By Amy Amatangelo

April 18, 12:00 PM

Sallyfieldcalistaflockhart_brothers Kitty's a Walker. Justin's a Walker. Kevin's a Walker. Wouldn't you like to be a Walker too?

Like I've said before, I totally think I could be a Walker. I could arrive unannouced. Immediately become exasperated with Nora and roll my eyes just so. Then I could tease Justin and get angry with Kevin. Later, I would call Sarah and Rebecca on a three way conference call to rehash the whole thing. Brothers & Sisters evokes that reaction in me -- I want to be a part of the show and a part of the family.

The series returns Sunday at 10 p.m. on ABC with a strong episode. The last couple of weeks have proven that it's been challenging for some shows to return to form after the writer's strike while other shows have soared.

Brothers & Sisters is flying high. The opening minutes of Sunday's episode quickly advance the plot forward while rapidly jettisoning some storylines. I love the direction the Robert and Kitty arc is going in and really Steven Weber can do no wrong in my eyes. So I'm loving him (yet still somewhat suspicious of him) as Sarah's new boyfriend. I still think the series is struggling somewhat with what to do with Saul, he seems to be dancing in and around story lines without ever settling into one. But that's a very small quible about a series that I enjoy so much.

After you watch Sunday's episode, please let me know what you think and talk about it below.

Quotes of the Week

Marciacross_desperatehousewives_s4_ "Oh don’t go Catholic. All that standing and kneeling and genuflecting. I go for worship not for a workout." Bree advising Lynette about religion on Desperate Housewives.

"Every second that banner stays up there is a permanent scar on our reputation. It’s like a stretch mark." Ashleigh to Casey about having a social  with the physics geeks on Greek.

"I am not kidding. Got it a week after we started dating." Jim showing the engagement ring he bought for Pam on The Office. After this week's episode, I'm feeling much better about the show. Do you feel the same way ?

"We’re like Ross and Rachel except not gay." Dennis to Liz about their on again/off again relationship on 30 Rock.

"I don't owe you a turd on Christmas." Carl to the drug dealer on My Name is Earl. Thanks to Toby for the quote. Toby and I agree the quote makes no sense but still totally cracked us up.

"I can't believe Earl tried to kill me. That's like peanut butter trying to kill jelly. They're in the same sandwich." Randy to Joy and Darnell on My Name is Earl. Thanks to Ginni for the quote.

"I accidentally ate her yogurt the other day and she bent back all my fingers." Sam to Dena about Andrea in Samantha Who? Thanks to Laura for the quote.

I don't think I stopped smiling the whole rest of the night after the Jim/Pam storyline on the Office last night. Although, if I'd been Pam and Jim had done the whole 'tying his shoes' bit to me, I'd have been somewhat peeved. Or possibly just blurted the word "YES!" before he had a chance to say anything ;)

When Jim showed that ring and did the fake going down on one knee I told my girlfriend I am so glad you don't watch this show with me.

I might totally steal that some day.

Kevin | Apr 18, 2008 12:16:00 PM | #

The Office was much improved this week. It was great to move away from the darkness of the deposition episode and last week's dinner party.

Derek | Apr 18, 2008 12:27:23 PM | #

Happy for Jim & Pam storyline...kinda like where it's heading, let's not drag it outttttt forever like some other shows. Looking forward to the return of Brothers & Sisters!!! :)
Love your columns!

One of my favorite quotes from last night's Office episode has to be: "I give her a 10 for looks, but a 3 for ability to describe herself."

Denise | Apr 18, 2008 1:27:34 PM | #

Hate Brothers&Sisters. Sally Field and Calista Flockhart are overrated actors and the show is so gay.

M | Apr 18, 2008 2:39:59 PM | #

I think I might like "My Name Is Earl" but I'm afraid to watch since I might be exposed to even a second of "30 Rock".

The Jim/Pam stuff was good, but they kinda seem too happy: usually this means they will soon be self-destructing. Also, my favorite part was Michael and Dwight singing. Andy and Kevin were great too, including Kevin's sad talking head: "It's just nice to win one."

Billiam | Apr 18, 2008 2:45:53 PM | #

I loved "The Office" this week. Yes, the Jim/Pam stuff is adorable. I hope they do get married and everything--but it would be nice if the planning was a lot shorter than Pam's last wedding.

Best line was when Andy was talking about why he got the parking spaces back: "...for the guy who has to worry about his kid's orphanage bills..." Haha, Andy is my new favorite.

Lauren B | Apr 18, 2008 3:39:24 PM | #

"Son a married couple"
Kenneth on 30 Rock...
I smile every time I think of it. I am going to used it whenever I can!

Gracie | Apr 18, 2008 4:21:02 PM | #

Got to be honest - Michael was too much for me this week, especially the date with Pam's land lady and the whole cemetary scene. But the Jim, Pam, Kevin and Andy subplots were awesome.

Sal | Apr 18, 2008 4:46:02 PM | #

My favorite 30 Rock quote was when Bucky said, "I just wandered around the building all night. I didn't run into another single living soul, except one gigantic lesbian. Who is Conan O'Brien, and why is she so sad?"

Amazing.

I loved the Office this week! I'm a sucker for Jim and Pam stuff.

Cat | Apr 18, 2008 5:58:55 PM | #

I kind of love Jim and Pam more because the writer are letting them have an actual relationship rather than inventing an excuse for conflict every week. It's refreshing. Plus, they're really sweet together.

30 Rock was awesome-o. Laughed so hard at Tracey's visit from Nixon, and his screwdriver solution to everything. Why are more people not watching this show? It reminds me of Arrested Development in a lot of ways, including the excellent writing and acting, paired with poor ratings. I wasn't a believer until a friend lent me the DVDs for season 1. Now I think it's the best comedy on TV (yes, I love the Office and Scrubs, but I think they're both past their best years).

K | Apr 18, 2008 11:05:16 PM | #

Dear M, though you are a troll, poor old me will rise to it anyway by saying this: you're just hating for hating's sake. Brothers & Sisters isn't for me, but really, calling it "gay" as if that's an insult by itself is just childish.

Fiz | Apr 18, 2008 11:24:29 PM | #

My favourite quote from the movie Fame - "Gay used to mean such a happy word"
I agree with Fiz - Brothers and Sisters is mostly about love which EVERYONE is entitled to! You don't have to love the show but don't use the word gay as an insult and expect support! I love Brothers and Sisters but I really hope they jetisone the getting Justin and Rebecca together storyline; she's much better as a Walker sibling.

SEU | Apr 19, 2008 12:16:37 AM | #

This week's episode of The Office was much better than last week's. Totally loved the fake proposal scene. Wonder what'll happen when he actually proposes for real. Can't wait!

Karen | Apr 19, 2008 1:52:58 AM | #

"If reality TV has taught us anything, it's that you can't keep people with no shame down." - Liz to Dennis on 30 Rock

I love this show so much!!

Dee | Apr 19, 2008 3:43:31 AM | #

I loved last night's episode of the "The Office" (although I agree w/ the poster who said the Andy/Kevin and Jim/Pam subplots were better then Michael's dating fiasco) When Jim got down on one knee -- he faked me out too! I can't wait to see what he does for the real proposal. And I thought "30 Rock" was hysterical too. When Dennis tried to throw Liz onto the subway tracks -- too funny! And I also loved Kenneth's quote "Son of a Married Couple" Great show. I'm surprised at that poster who says they're afraid to see one second of the show. I think they should give it a chance.

Michelle | Apr 19, 2008 5:27:08 AM | #

I'm with Billiam. As adorable as the Jim and Pam stuff was, I'm concerned it will all implode somehow before they get to be permanently happy!

Allie | Apr 19, 2008 12:55:56 PM | #

Funny moments from last week's The Office:

Creed talking about getting Pam's old chair: "Two down, one to go". He is such a bizarre character. I wish they would include him more often.

Michael's greeting to Oscar: "Hey Oscar Mayer...wiener...lover"

My fav quote of the week was on How I Met Your Mother...

"Lily, control your woman!" by The Barnacle.

Triple H | Apr 19, 2008 7:57:26 PM | #

Why is everything good [almost] on Mondays and Thursdays, with almost nothing watchable on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays? Except: Reaper and Boston Legal on Tuesdays and SciFi Fridays on SciFi [Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica].
Desperate Housewives, Wire in the Blood [BBCAmerica], DayBreak [recording the unaired episodes on TV One], The Tudors [Showtime], and Shameless [Sundance] keep Sundays reasonably shiny.
Three great comedies on Monday [Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and Samantha Who?] balance dramas Medium, Bones, and House, with Gossip Girl and The Hills
providing juicy teen soapy flavor. Thursdays are over filled with Smallville and Supernatural on the CW, along with comedies 30 Rock and My Name Is Earl on NBC, with heavy hitters Grey's Anatomy and LOST on ABC, not to mention Without a Trace on CBS.
If I cared about reality shows, CSI's, or Law and Order and ER like the typical viewer, i'd be nuts. Maybe this summer, I'll get to clear out the backlog in my dvrs of anime and New Amsterdam and Daybreak [I'm waiting for them all to air before I start watching] and watch Jericho [same].

Even with two dual-tuner dvrs, my Mondays and Thursdays are triple-booked, and I'm kinda glad the Writers Strike happened, 'cause my schedule is full even without Heroes, Pushing Daisies, The Unit, and Las Vegas.

Best quote from last week purely from a pop culture reference point of view has got to be the exchange between Circus the drug dealer (Michael Pena) and Earl’s dad Carl (Beau Bridges) on ‘My Name Is Earl’. Circus referred to Carl as ‘Dude’. Displeased, Carl retorted, “Don’t call me Dude!” to which Circus said, “Easy, Lebowski!”. Its brilliance lies in the fact that Beau’s brother Jeff played the lead character of ‘The Dude’ in the Coen brothers’ 1998 offering ‘The Big Lebowski’. It was so subtle, I almost missed it. Thank God for instant VCR replay!

Kristal | Apr 20, 2008 2:41:04 PM | #

I couldn't stop smiling at the Jim quote... It is so perfectly like him to buy the ring a week after they started dating.
I didn't think I could possibly love Jim more than I did!

Mandy | Apr 20, 2008 6:21:39 PM | #

I thought this week was by far the worst week for 30-Rock. It was everything that was wrong with the show and nothing that was right about it. Tina Fey continues to write herself as the object of everyone's affection and constant republican jokes. We get it...you don't like republicans!!! Jack Donaghey is at his best when he is out-thinking everybody, not when Alec Baldwin is republican hating. Tracy Jordan was the only one who made me laugh this week. That episode was so bad, I was ready to give up on the show over 1 week. Seriously, "The committee to re-invade Viet Nam" was so low rent.

Dan H | Apr 21, 2008 4:20:22 AM | #

Loved this week's Brothers & Sisters. I'm glad they came back with the entire Walker clan together. You really believe that they are siblings. Some tears and lots of laughter.

No Scotty this week but I loved the shout out "Hey Sweetie" ... "Hi Scotty" so we know he's still in Kevin's life.

Lorraine | Apr 21, 2008 5:55:43 AM | #

if i could be in a TV family, id want to be a Keaton or a Cunningham

ken | Apr 21, 2008 7:14:18 AM | #

*sigh* why can't there be more real guys like Jim? When someone wrote I can't wait to see what Jim does next I paused and thought I can't wait to see what the great writers give him to do! Also, I really really hope they let this happen with a happy ending. I just keep telling myself Monica and Chandler got to get married and it worked out fine for them and the show.

Heather | Apr 21, 2008 10:09:07 AM | #

Brother's and Sister's has so much talent involved, I'm surprised that I really hate it. Why would anyone want to part of that family? All they do is whine and complain. The Flockhart character is truly an awful person. I hope the new younger sister turns out to be someone else's daughter for her own sake. The characters are so shallow and self-involved it's hard to have any empathy with them. I do feel sorry for the people who come into contact with them.

Mike | Apr 21, 2008 1:46:35 PM | #

I agree with Mike. I want to like it, but I can't. I've given "Brothers and Sisters" more than enough rope to hang itself. Time to yank the cord.

John in Sac | Apr 21, 2008 10:45:09 PM | #

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned this quote from Boston Legal, and I'm afraid that I can't remember it exactly, but it went something like this...Jerry was talking to Katie about his new girlfriend and she inquired about when he got a new girlfriend, and he said (and I'm paraphrasing), "Well, during the strike , I met somebody" and Katie said "What strike?" and he said "Oh, don't worry about it" (or something very close to it). Boston Legal is very good with playing with people's heads over certain things that they say, like the "Lebowski" comment above from Earl.

LOVE the Walkers! I haven't wanted to be a part of a TV family this much since the Bradfords!!!!!

AlexnNate | Apr 23, 2008 6:59:20 AM | #

Not much talk about the Walkers and Brothers & Sisters so I'll add my late comments...
I do really enjoy this show, but disagree that's it's returned in true form after the writer's strike. This week's episode felt rushed, with a lot of stuff happening, but the action felt really theatrical and somewhat inconsequential. Thankfully, the cast is so good, they just move through it all smoothly until something well written comes along in a week or so.

Varris | Apr 24, 2008 10:05:25 AM | #

Oh, and I forgot. I think the main reason why I love seeing the Walkers' interactions is because I'm an only child and they have the kind of so close I-realy-love-you-but-sometimes-I-could-strangle-you thing I always thought siblings had.

Varris | Apr 24, 2008 10:07:58 AM | #

I can't stand "Brothers and Sisters." I stopped watching such bad overacting and wretched plots.

M, I understand some people call that network "Gay-B-C"!
