Parting is such sweet sorrow . . . saying goodbye (for now) to Eli Stone
I’m going to miss you most of all, Eli.
That was my exact thought when the announcer promoted the season finale of Eli Stone this Thursday at 10 p.m. on ABC. I can always tell that I'm totally smitten with a show when I have that reaction – that I’m going to miss a character over the summer. (It’s probably no surprise that the last time I felt this way was about a show was Everwood, which was also executive produced by Greg Berlanti. It also probably explains why Everwood is still in my season pass manager. I like the idea that Tivo still looks for new episodes).
I’ve grown very attached to, as he likes to call himself, America’s Next Top Prophet. And every week, Eli Stone improves and continues to find the right mix of visions, musical numbers, George Michael (who returns for the finale) and court cases.
And it is a downright brilliant move to have Eli struggle with his visions and to have him make the decision to have his aneurysm removed. I don’t really know where the show can go from there and that’s what makes it so exciting. Also I’ve just decided that ABC absolutely will pick up the show for a second season. They simply have to. I plan to live in this reality until I’m told otherwise (if you recall this is the same reality where dark chocolate has no caloric value. Join me. You'll like it here.)
So when I woke up this morning, I had this distinct thought – I think Eli Stone is my most favorite new show of the 2007-2008 season. I kind of totally heart it. And then I thought I wonder what everyone else’s absolute most favorite new show of the 2007-2008 season is? So do tell by talking about it below.
What is your most favorite (you can only pick one) new show of the 2007-2008 season?
Highlights of the Week Ahead
All times listed are Eastern Time for April 14-20.
Marshall is not happy at his new job on How I Met Your Mother (Monday, CBS, 8:30 p.m.) And the very exciting news is that what you've heard is true, we will soon see a second Robin Sparkles video. Let's go to the mall to celebrate.
Timothy Olyphant guest stars as Samantha’s wealthy boss on Samantha Who? (Monday, ABC, 9:30 p.m.). And for those of you who were wondering. Last week, Sam picked up the phone to make sure she had hung it up and that Todd wasn’t still on the line. That is something I’ve TOTALLY done. Have you?
Bones is back with new episodes Monday at 8 p.m. on FOX. We haven’t seen Bones, Booth and the rest of the gang since November. And I have to say, absence has made my heart grow fonder. I’ve always liked Bones but I’m really beginning to appreciate that is quickly making its way onto my must-watch-every-week list. Two things this season have really moved the show to an even higher level of quality in my opinion. I have thoroughly been enjoying the season long serial killer arc (Gormegon). It’s a storyline that has organically involved the entire cast. And I’ve also loved the addition of Dr. Lance Sweets (John Francis Daly) to the show this season. He’s the driving force behind some very humorous moments and he's smartly advanced the relationship between Bones and Booth while still leaving me with just enough doubt that there are times when I think he could be Gormegon. This week, Sweets makes Bones and Booth join him on a double date. Good times.
It’s the season finale of New Amsterdam Monday at 9 p.m. on FOX and John will wonder if Sara really is the one. Is New Amsterdam your pick for your favorite new show of the season? Let me know.
The Beeper King is back on 30 Rock (Thursday, NBC, 8:30 p.m.) I’ve seen the episode and it’s hilarious. Can you guess what my favorite quote was?
Okay so it appears I was in the minority in thinking The Office was a little too dark and disturbing last week. I’m not saying there weren’t funny moments (my two favorites – Jan dancing to Hunter’s music and Jim trying to use the flood excuse to get out of the dinner) but overall the episode made me kind of sad. All I could think was, I want Michael out of that relationship. The good news is that the gang returns to the Office this week and we’ll meet the other companies when Kevin and Andy try to win back the Dunder-Mifflin parking spaces Thursday at 9 p.m. on NBC.
As Lex fully becomes evil, word is that somebody dies on Smallville this week (Thursday at 9 p.m. on the CW). I’m thinking it could be Chloe, how about you?
Seriously what is up with the new character Dr. Brenner (David Lyons) on ER (Thursday, NBC, 10 p.m.). I know we weren’t supposed to like him but I really couldn’t stand him. He wasn’t entertainingly annoying. He was simply annoying and it looks like he’s going to be here for awhile. Do you think the show just put him there as a distraction so I wouldn’t be that upset to with the ridiculous Sam and Tony closing scene (really? An OR room? Do they think they are on Grey’s Anatomy?). And what about the throwaway line they used to dismiss Julia Dupree? But the scenes with Abby and Luka were beautifully done and heartbreaking. And right now, they're the reasons I can't quit my ER habit.
Don’t forget that Moonlight is back in its rightful time slot Friday at 9 p.m. on CBS. This week CBS repeats the last new episode when Mick learned he could become human again. New episodes begin next week.
It’s time to say goodbye (alas, probably permanently) to Canterbury’s Law, which ends its season Friday at 9 p.m. on FOX.
What did you think of the return of Desperate Housewives? I’m still so disappointed that Gabby has become such a shallow character. It made the moment where she told Carlos she loved him so much less believable. And if you’ve seen the previews, you know that Jason Gedrick returns as Rick Coletti Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC. I really liked the way the series handled the Rick story line last season. That Lynette didn’t have an affair but struggled with the fact that she was attracted to another man. I’m curious what they’ll do with Rick’s return.
That’s all for today. I’ll be back on Wednesday with this week’s familiar faces and to discuss the return of Brothers & Sisters. Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week or a topic for discussion. Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Talk to you on Wednesday.
Amy, I am SOOOOO happy that Bones is finally one of your must-watch-every-week shows!!! I know it used to be a three-star show for you, so I hope it has moved up! I absolutely adore Sweets, and I am so excited for tonight that I can't even stand it! I've been counting down! :D
Sarah | Apr 14, 2008 12:35:18 PM | #I enjoy New Amsterdam but wouldn't call it my favorite new show this season.
That would be a tie between Pushing Daisies and Chuck. I was disappointed that neither is going to have new eps until the fall; I hope they don't lose viewers that way and end up cancelling the shows. Both are too good to lose.
Mickey | Apr 14, 2008 12:35:28 PM | #PS. Eli Stone is my most favorite new show this season too. It makes me laugh every week and yet many weeks I also get choked up by its poignancy. It NEEDS to be picked up, so I'll join your dark chocolate reality!
Sarah | Apr 14, 2008 12:37:06 PM | #I thought you said that you were going to discuss the return of One Tree Hill tonight?
Angela | Apr 14, 2008 12:38:47 PM | #I agree the departing of Eli Stone is difficult. It filled the gap left by Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty. How awsome will Thursday night be this fall with those three shows together!
Tammy | Apr 14, 2008 12:40:24 PM | #Never got into Eli Stone, it seemed too much like a poor bastard child of Ally McBeal and Scrubs to me.
Pushing Daisies was by far the best show of the tragically foreshortened season. Everything from the script and the acting down to the set design was sheer quality. I can't wait for the new season to begin.
tacitus | Apr 14, 2008 12:43:40 PM | #Desperate Housewives - I know it's TV, and I realize Gabby is portrayed as shallow, etc. but as the wife of a blind man, I was so aggravated at how she treated him. Should the character be annoyed? Yes, endanger a man whose adjusting himself? Nheartless, so, no. The Story line ticked me off to no end.
New favorite show? Hard. I like New Amsterdam, but wonder how long I would be able to stick with it...
So many shows got disrupted it makes you wonder what will be back in the fall...
Favorite new show: Dirty Sexy Money. It was a toss up between DSM, Gossip Girl and Pushing Daisies. DSM won by a hair because of Peter Krause. And Donald Sutherland.
susan | Apr 14, 2008 12:46:37 PM | #Of the new shows this season, I'd have to say Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Gossip Girl, Reaper, Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money, Samantha Who and Greek were my favorites. I especially like Chuck, made a good companion to Heroes (which I long to see again, even if they hit a sophomore slump).
I hope Terminator returns, but that might be asking too much.
Sean | Apr 14, 2008 12:49:32 PM | #I agree with tacitus. Pushing Daisies was by far the highlight of the new shows to me (although I think it was a pretty poor batch of new shows, overall). It's funny that Amy cant stand the whimsy of Pushing Daisies, but loves that element in Eli Stone. I don't know, maybe I'm just tired of rehashed themes with slight variations (it's not like Ally, cause it's medical! And he's a guy!), but another lawyer show, even with this twist, seems so done to me. Just couldn't get into it. Whatever you think about Pushing Daisies, you can't ignore the supreme creativity and originality of the idea.
K | Apr 14, 2008 12:49:44 PM | #Oh, and Moonlight was pretty cool too.
Sean | Apr 14, 2008 12:50:26 PM | #You know... I feel the exact same way... I'm so totally conflicted that Eli is having it taken out - how can he still having experienced the earthquake?! I'm on pins and needles until Thursday.
I have my dad watching the show now, and he thinks Eli will be fine because a) they said end of season (not end of series or just finale) and also that they were adding it in after Desperate to boost the finale. I think he's right.
If not for Eli, does Burn Notice count for the 07-08 season? Burn Notice is a solid show and if not for it... I don't know what I would do this summer.
Tamaryn | Apr 14, 2008 12:50:36 PM | #I have to say that I think that Eli Stone was my favorite show of the year. It is a show I can't wait to watch. It often makes me laugh and I loved the musical numbers which turned out to have deeper meanings. I do hope that it gets picked up for another season because if not it will be missed.
Although Samantha Who and Pushing Daisies came in as close seconds. It is so hard to choose.
Ariane | Apr 14, 2008 12:55:48 PM | #I wanted to like Eli Stone but I didn't make it past the third episode. They got the legal stuff SO wrong I just couldn't bear it. I get the whole suspension of disbelief thing but it was so bad that I just couldn't watch. If your show is going to be about lawyers, some attention to the law must be paid.
EiEiOhh | Apr 14, 2008 12:59:15 PM | #Favorite new show without a doubt is ... Big Bang Theory! It's laugh out loud fun.
Pushing Daisies lost me with the constant voice over.
Allen | Apr 14, 2008 1:00:07 PM | #Moonlight was my favorite new show until Eli Stone began. It has far surpassed anything else out there for me. The addition of Katey Sagal for these last 2 episodes has been amazing!
Tallu | Apr 14, 2008 1:05:11 PM | #Could not get into Eli, but there were lots of good shows this season. (I think it was one of the better years for new shows). I have found a special place for Bang Theory, Reeper, Gossip Girl, Moonlight, Womens Murder Club. I like New Amsterdam but I am not sure if it is a long term thing for me or not. I also have to give thumb up to a couple of my summer favs, Burn Notice and Saving Grace.
Hettie | Apr 14, 2008 1:07:12 PM | #I agree about Eli Stone. The first couple episodes were good but I wasn't sure about the show yet. But now I'm hooked and it just keeps getting better and better. I also like Pushing Daisies, but the premise got stale by about episode 6. If PD doesn't return next season (even though I believe it is) I dont think I would miss it. The way I feel towards ES is the same way I feel towards Friday night lights. Since What about brian and October road also had not so great ratings but got a 2nd season I'm hopeful ABC will bring it back but not sure about its chances at becoming a hit.
Chet | Apr 14, 2008 1:11:29 PM | #Eli Stone is definitely my favorite NEW show! This week was the best, Eli and the gang Thursday night, Sunday night and again this Thursday :)!! A girl couldn't ask for anything more! I hope hope hope it gets renewed.
Lynn | Apr 14, 2008 1:12:52 PM | #Oops - I forgot about Life. It is high on my second tier.
Tallu | Apr 14, 2008 1:13:48 PM | #New Amsterdam is my favorite new show - no question about it. I am really hoping it's renewed by Fox. I also have enjoyed Eli Stone, Private Practice and Dirty, Sexy, Money but John Amsterdam and his elusive past have captured my heart.
dvikib | Apr 14, 2008 1:16:32 PM | #Well, (a) I can see why my favorite show of the season, Journeyman, got canceled since it hasn't been mentioned above. And (b) re: Eli Stone. We turned it off after a few episodes, and then turned it on after a few more. We find the parts with Eli and his struggles are so compelling that we're grudgingly willing to put up with the side stories with Taylor and Patty and the other staff members in the office, none of whom we love yet. I would like to see it get renewed, but I won't be heartbroken if it isn't.
Patty | Apr 14, 2008 1:17:45 PM | #I really like Eli Stone, but I have to go with Pushing Daisies and Chuck as the best new shows this season. Even if it's been so long since they were on that it seems like a whole season ago!
David | Apr 14, 2008 1:20:18 PM | #It's hard to pick a favorite show. The ones that made it through three episodes were all pretty good. Pushing Daisies, Greek, Chuck and Reaper are on my must-see list, and Gossip Girl and Dirty Sexy Money are my fave new guilty pleasures.
I like Samantha Who and Eli Stone, but I don't mind if I miss an episode.
And, I had some trouble getting into Moonlight, even though I'm a genre fan. I'm going to do a marathon of my tivoed eps to catch up before the new one comes on next week.
Jen | Apr 14, 2008 1:21:27 PM | #Favorite New Show: Chuck
Second Favorites: Big Bang Theory, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who.
Tom | Apr 14, 2008 1:21:48 PM | #There wasn't a lot to choose from this past year. I DID like Eli Stone, sort of like Samantha Who and Misguided, which is huge for me because I don't do sitcoms. And I liked (for some reason I can't really fathom) Lipstick Jungle. THAT was hard - the only two shows I actually liked came on at the same time.
I absolutely agree with you about Gabby and her shallowness. It's completely unreal and most of the time keeps me from watching DH if there's ANYTHING else on.
Jan | Apr 14, 2008 1:24:00 PM | #Forgot to mention the other show I liked that maybe 3 other people besides me watched - Kville.
But it was killed off by Dancing With The Stars - people like me, who had to watch DWTS and hoped Kville would come back - which of course, it didn't.
Jan again | Apr 14, 2008 1:27:16 PM | #Journeyman dammit. I've been able to bring myself to watch the last episodes because I know once I do it will be over. :(
Well with the spin off for the Office coming, my theory is that Jan is going to be involved in that and thus Michael will be a single guy.
Oh btw... I think the only thing that was very awful was the fact that Michael had lied about having a relationship with Pam, that was wildly inappropriate. He could have said something about her having a crush on him or something like that, but a relationship.. jeebus.
Francesca | Apr 14, 2008 1:32:17 PM | #I have to vote for Dirty Sexy Money as my favorite new show. I'm still laughing over the first episode where Peter Krause secretary programmed his cell phone with hilarious ringtones for his contacts. I also think Zoe McClellan is a great addition to the show. I loved her on JAG, also.
pugmom99 | Apr 14, 2008 1:36:10 PM | #For overall best new show, it's a little tough to choose; I'd have to consider Pushing Daisies and Journeyman to be at the top and close, but I think I'd have to pick Journeyman. I'm going to miss it more than I would if Daisies wasn't coming back.
Big Bang Theory is definitely the best new comedy! It's also kind of hard to compare half-hour sitcoms against one-hour dram(a,edie)s.
David B. Mears | Apr 14, 2008 1:37:37 PM | #oh gosh so many are saying Eli is their favorite (also mine) so that means that with the astuteness of the executives it will be cancelled. maybe if everyone says they dont like it they will dcide to keep it going. yeah right!
darline | Apr 14, 2008 1:53:44 PM | #Chuck and Pushing Daisies are my top 2 this season. Reaper started off really good, dipped a little, but now, it's gotten really good again. And am I the only one who actually liked Carpoolers??
Anyone see that Lost is going to have an extra episode when it comes back? Woo.....hooo
Aaron | Apr 14, 2008 1:57:48 PM | #Eli Stone is absolutely my favorite new show! After last nights episode I went straight to the computer and wrote ABC..."Please Please Please bring Eli Stone back! I dont know what I would do without my Eli".
I am always smiling when I watch this show. And we all need to smile a little more dontcha think. :)
Amy, I definitely agree with you in regards to ER. The new character really put me off, actually, all the new characters. Abby and Luca are the only reason why I kept watching Thursday. They need to stop having everyone hook up. And return to Neela! She needs some happiness!
Marisa | Apr 14, 2008 2:26:07 PM | #I completely agree that Eli Stone is my new favorite show of 2007-2008. I like the combination of Eli being doubtfully and yet he still follows his visions. And to mention, I'm a fan of Victor Garber, so I'm glad when he gets to show his acting abilities. I can hardly believe that the season finale is this Thursday. I completely agree that the show needs to be picked up for next season.
Brittany | Apr 14, 2008 2:27:00 PM | #Seriously, what was the deal with the new guy on ER? That opening scene with him in bed with the two women threw me off. It was so sordid and gross! I half expected one of them to start seizing with some unknown/mysterious ailment, like in "House." This character needs to leave the ER immediately.
The Abby and Luca storyline is so great because those two actors seem to work on another level than many actors on that show. Watching Maura Tierney is like watching a master's class. I think that if she had been on ER during the "glory years," she would have been nominated for an Emmy. I wish more people were watching her this year.
Cat | Apr 14, 2008 2:38:01 PM | #I agree with Big Bang Theory, and I also got a kick out of Aliens in America and Miss Guided.
I watched a couple eps of Canterbury's Law. The acting was fantastic, but I thought the storylines were ridiculous.
Joe | Apr 14, 2008 2:41:12 PM | #My favorite new show is Dirty Sexy Money. Although I do feel we have had a better season of new shows than the last season. I enjoy Pushing Daisies, Greek, Eli Stone, and Lipstick Jungle.
Jerry | Apr 14, 2008 2:45:11 PM | #Life and Big Bang Theory are this season's best new shows for me.
That new Aussie doc on ER needs to take a hike. What the heck kind of a return to TV was that? Abby & Luca are absolutely the reason I am still watching. Well them, and waiting for Ray to come back to Neela.
Lacie | Apr 14, 2008 2:53:12 PM | #Until I started reading other people's comments I had a hard time even remembering what shows were new this year! Effect of the strike I suppose... However, when I first read your question, Amy, my first thought was Chuck so I'm going to have to go with that. Great show.
Allie | Apr 14, 2008 2:56:33 PM | #Amy, I had the same reaction last night with Eli Stone. My only critique of last nights show was the quake itself. I was thinking they would wait until the season ender. but such is life. Eli is my favorite new show of 2007-2008. It better come back next season. Eli still has some more prophetting to do. Oh and Canfield's Dark Choclate Soda has no calories.. so you are half way there to caloric paradise!!
Dave Weiser | Apr 14, 2008 2:59:58 PM | #Eli Stone rocks!!!! I hope that it gets picked up as it may not be The Sopranos, but it's so great not to see yet another procedural or something that is so quirky that it takes away from its relatability. Eli provides a great 60 minutes that will make you feel pretty good in a way that does not leave you hating yourself in the morning for. More Eli ABC!!!!
Springintoaction | Apr 14, 2008 3:10:14 PM | #My favorate show was Journeyman closely followed by Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money, Terminator, Amsterdam, Life, and Reaper. A pretty good crop this season of shows this season. Especially since I only liked two shows last season... 30 Rock and Jericho. Btw... I like Carpoolers as well. I thought I was the only one until now.
Farscaper | Apr 14, 2008 3:11:39 PM | #My favorate show was Journeyman closely followed by Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money, Terminator, Amsterdam, Life, and Reaper. A pretty good crop this season of shows this season. Especially since I only liked two shows last season... 30 Rock and Jericho. Btw... I like Carpoolers as well. I thought I was the only one until now.
Farscaper | Apr 14, 2008 3:11:41 PM | #I'm so glad to see so many others enjoy Eli Stone. A little fantasy is nice to have at night. I will be upset if it doesn't return.
suel | Apr 14, 2008 3:15:36 PM | #I did watch some episodes of Pushing Daisies, New Amsterdam and Journeyman. I can't really say that I anticipate the shows every week though. Between them I guess I'll go with Pushing Daisies as the one I paid the most attention to. Maybe it's a good thing that that is the series that is guaranteed another season then.
I don't think that Chloe Sullivan will be the one killed in the next episode. I do think she has a disadvantage being the only character without a comic book backstory though. Nobody knows what her fate will ultimately be because of that. I think Lionel Luthor has a chance to be the killed of character too, because there has never been another Superman story with Lex's dad in the picture.
Penny | Apr 14, 2008 3:16:41 PM | #My favourite new show of this season was definitely Eli Stone.
The humour, the heart, the quirky and multi-dimentional characters leaves me feeling the same love I had for Everwood.
I hope it's back next year.
Krissy | Apr 14, 2008 3:23:53 PM | #My fav new show was Chuck followed by Journeyman (which at least had some closure in its last ep). I also like Reaper (which hasn't gotten good lately), Terminator (which seemed to be really heading somewhere for this season, but got cut off in a dumb place), and Pushing Daisies (though I don't feel the need to see every ep of that show). I couldn't sit through the pilot of Big Bang Theory, but I'm starting to like what I see now. Basically, I love the nerd humor but sometimes get sick of the sitcom cliches and forced situations.
| Apr 14, 2008 3:29:50 PM | #Eli Stone and Samantha Who are my favorite new shows this year.
I wish Eli and Maggie would be together I don't want him with Taylor.
I think Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone are my favorite new shows this year. DirtySexyMoney and Samantha Who are not a bad second choices though. I guess we can always count on ABC to provide us with quality scripted programming.
About ER, Abby is the only reason I watch. I have always rooted for her, I've even forgiven her for sleeping with Moretti. Also, Dr. Pratt is cool, I like his character because he could just one of my homeboys. As for the House-clone, I want to give him an episode or two to judge him.
Lastly, as for Smallville, it looks like Lionel is the one who's dying. C'mon Amy, don't kill Chloe, who are we gonna count on for tomorrow's headline, Lois?!
Ritchie | Apr 14, 2008 3:38:52 PM | #Eli Stone is definitely up there for me, although I absolutely adore the sheer OTT craziness of Dirty Sexy Money (definitely my pick for the 21st century's very own Melrose Place). Chuck, Life and Reaper have also grown on me over the course of their seasons, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed we get the latter back for a second season :)
As much as I would love Allison Mack to leave Smallville - not because I don't like her, I love her, and she deserves better than the mind-numbing drivel this show forces upon her - I have a feeling it'll be Lionel. Since Jonathan died they've barely even tried to find excuses to keep the older characters involved, and with this Veritas storyline it seems like a natural way for Lionel to leave (with Lex filling his shoes).
Patrick | Apr 14, 2008 3:44:04 PM | #my fav's were definately October Road and Gossip Girl. cant get enough of them and wish they come back soon!
ms v | Apr 14, 2008 3:46:57 PM | #my fav's were definately October Road and Gossip Girl. cant get enough of them and wish they come back soon!
ms v | Apr 14, 2008 3:47:08 PM | #I live in Europe and started seeing the series because of George. I've been to a few shows of the European Tour which ended in August 2007, and I turned to Eli Stone as a consolation prize. I missed George! Kind of how you feel now that the season finale has been announced. I'll miss Eli, not because of George (I'll see plenty of him during the US tour this Summer!), but because he's such a all around nice guy and the series is so quirky! I loved it! I hope it gets picked for a second season!
Isabel | Apr 14, 2008 4:04:21 PM | #I love Eli Stone & hope it returns next season, My other favorites are Life, Dirty Sexy Money, Terminator and Gossip Girl.
Tiffany | Apr 14, 2008 4:18:47 PM | #I'll have to pick "Dirty Sexy Money" as my favorite of this season. That said, it's just the topmost of a largely undistinguished pile of new content. I haven't really caught myself thinking "THIS IS GREAT!" since the premiere of "Veronica Mars" -- and that was 3 seasons before this one (the same year that brought us "Battlestar: Galactica).
If it were a matter of style alone I'd pick "Pushing Daisies", but the lame comedic diversions of the show become annoying as regular fare. I recommend a large spoonful of moderation, imbibed weekly.
Henry | Apr 14, 2008 4:25:23 PM | #Amy, just so you know, an ounce of dark chocolate a day is actually very good for you and recommended by doctors as it helps against heart disease - perhaps your 'reality' allows you to eat more than one ounce?!
I'm a milk chocolate fan myself but I am totally in love with Eli so I'm moving in with you until ABC picks this fab show up!
I wish ER will get over trying to recreate the George Clooney/Julianna Marguiles pairing with other less capable actors with zero chemistry - there was Abby and Carter, Sam and Luka and now Sam and Uncle Jesse - give it up already! I don't like Dr Brenner either - he's way too full of himself and needs taking down a good few pegs but he'll probably turn out to be the new boss or something knowing how ER works!
On the other hand I adore Dr Sweets even though he's totally clueless about what he's doing he's basically practising with Bones and Booth I love him as their psycho advisor on the Gormagon case - I can't believe John Francis Daly is only 22 makes me feel like a dirty old woman speaking of which, what makes it OK for women in tv shows to commit statutory rape but not men? It's bad enough Desperate Housewives' Katherine whacked her husband but no-one cares that neither she nor Gabby got done for banging children? Would we be bothered if Mike started banging Dylan? I think we would!
I can't beleive all my shows are coming back right in the middle of the new school term, I'll never get any homework prepared and will get into lots of trouble - I'll be hiding out in Amy's reality...
I REFUSE TO CHOOSE JUST ONE!!!
Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, and Chuck
Favorite new show that didn't make it - definately Carpoolers.
Denise | Apr 14, 2008 5:00:06 PM | #Journeyman. No question. Head above the rest. Add to that Life and Pushing Daisies, if you wondered about my top three.
New Amsterdam and Eli Stone both suffer from some stiff acting from some of the characters, through their premises are fun.
I'll gladly watch more of Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money, Terminator and Ladies Murder Club, if/when they're renewed.
Elizabeth | Apr 14, 2008 5:30:55 PM | #My favorite new shows of this season are Dirty Sexy Money and Gossip Girl. Apart from those two and Samantha Who?, this season has been disappointing.
Cady | Apr 14, 2008 6:12:47 PM | #My favorite new shows of this season are Dirty Sexy Money and Gossip Girl. Apart from those two and Samantha Who?, this season has been disappointing.
Cady | Apr 14, 2008 6:14:31 PM | #Big Shots
(I'm obviously alone here.)
chile | Apr 14, 2008 6:19:04 PM | #Chuck
Life
Burn Notice
My favorite shows of 2007-2008.
Journeyman
Life
Terminator
Pushing Daisies
Saving Grace
I SOOOO want to like Amsterdam-but I don't like any character on it--especially Amsterdam--mean, superficial, self-centered.
Morisot | Apr 14, 2008 7:00:28 PM | #New show? Hard to say. I liked Reaper, Burn Notice, Chuck, and Terminator (and I'm really surprised at that last one). I'm probably forgetting something, but I can't think of anything I really didn't like.
And Smallville? Assuming the powers that be don't want to mess up continuity more than they already have, I have to think either Lionel or Chloe is a goner (they are the only two who aren't in the comics, right?). As for which one, well, it'd be kind of dumb to show the kill in the promos, so Lionel would theoretically be safe, but, then again, this is the CW we're talking about...
My favorite new show of the 2007 and 2008 season is definitely ELI STONE.
I simply can't wait to watch it every week. I have almost forgot my heartbreak of losing my beloved Veronica Mars show (hey, I said ALMOST).
Anyway, some of those that ranked just under ELI STONE are Dirty Sexy Money, Private Practice, Pushing Daisies and Reaper.
I also am a fan of the recently cancelled show, Journeyman. I couldn't wait to see each week were he would end up.
VeronicaMarsRocks | Apr 14, 2008 7:47:26 PM | #Tough call for favorite show but I'm going to have to go with Chuck. It's Alias meets the Office with the light hearted of Psych.
Viva Chuck!!
Nikki | Apr 14, 2008 7:55:41 PM | #As I already told you in email if Eli goes I think I'm about done with TV in general. I've just watched Sunday's episode on Tivo and I told my wife I'm very worried it won't be picked up.
A show that makes you laugh, smile and even choke back tears at times is something special. It's not something you're going to find on Fox or in a reality series. For once let ABC have the conviction to bring back quality TV.
Dan | Apr 14, 2008 8:09:09 PM | #Life. This show was a surprise.
David | Apr 14, 2008 9:41:58 PM | #Favorite new show would have to be New Amsterdam.
Other favorites:
Reaper
Burn Notice
About A Girl(a really funny college comedy on 'The N')
Gossip Girl
Life
Favorite new show of 2007-08? No question: Journeyman. Which, because I liked it, we'll never see again. This is my fate.
I also greatly enjoyed Moonlight and New Amsterdam. The male leads on all three shows are terrific, and the female leads -- particularly on Journeyman -- are very good, too.
I think TV usually does science fiction and fantasy terribly. This season, with my three shows, has been a nice change -- emphasizing the human element while bringing in a taste of the unusual. I thank the networks for that.
For me ELI STONE was nr 1.
It was my favorite of the season. I am convinced it will be back next year. It was such a great bunch of actors and an inspiring show.
Very funny and should not be taken as seriosly as some did, shame on you (ever seen Boston Legal).
As for the George Michael factor, he is just so charming and talented, he has got so many classic songs, and wow he can sing ... and he can obviusly act too. Hats off to him.
Now Garber has got to get his Emmy, they shouldn't even compete.
Thanks for this wonderful show!!!
Catherine Douglas | Apr 14, 2008 10:01:01 PM | #I love that Eli Stone has some characters who actually believe in Eli's visions and try to help find the meaning in them. Unlike Medium where every time Allison has a dream her husband Joe plays stupid and says maybe it's just a dream this time even though it never is. I like seeing the main character question his abilities more than some of the people around him.
Alex | Apr 14, 2008 10:24:05 PM | #Definitely good tie between Dirty Sexy Money and Big Bang Theory!
P Kel | Apr 14, 2008 11:05:48 PM | #Favourite new show would be Gossip Girl.
Close seconds are Dirty Sexy Money and Samantha Who.
Sad Journeyman was canceled.
Pushing Daisies and Chuck are good too..but it's fine if I miss an episode here and there.
Harla | Apr 14, 2008 11:18:49 PM | #Eli Stone hands down!!!!!!!!
Rachel B | Apr 14, 2008 11:29:10 PM | #On cable it's Burn Notice and Mad Men. On network it's Chuck and The Big Bang Theory.
Stevie G | Apr 14, 2008 11:47:40 PM | #Without a question, Back to You, my new favorite comedy on television. Frasier Crane and Debra Barone make a perfect pair. I hope next fall it's BACK!
Shaun | Apr 14, 2008 11:59:54 PM | #My favorite would probably be a tie between Pushing Daisies & Chuck, with Big Bang Theory not too far behind.
As for Chloe dying, according to a certain TV Guide columnist/ FNL Paley panel moderator, it's not going to be Chloe who kicks the bucket. Let's just say that the person who I think does die has long outlived their usefulness.
Gil | Apr 15, 2008 12:42:17 AM | #Women's Murder Club.
And on Tues. the 29th, Gerald McRaney guest stars!!
NEW episodes people!!
I still think Eli Stone is a poor man's Wonderfalls. The court cases are ridiculous and basically propaganda, as well. When Natasha Henstridge is your best actress, you're in big trouble. Only Eli and Victor Garber are worth watching on the show.
Anyways, I think all of the following were better new shows this year than Eli Stone:
Breaking Bad, Chuck, Reaper, Journeyman, Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, Life, New Amsterdam, DEA, Moonlight, and Terminator.
Dan H | Apr 15, 2008 4:54:39 AM | #The Big Bang Theory
followed closely by:
Chuck
Moonlight
Terminator
I love 'Chuck' and believe it was certainly the standout of the new season.
As for the Smallville scoop - I pray with all my heart that it isn't Chloe who bites the dust. Lana or Lois? Sure - but that won't happen.
THall | Apr 15, 2008 6:24:10 AM | #Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone & Wonderfalls. Ok the last not new or still on the air but I still miss it.
Gregg | Apr 15, 2008 6:35:06 AM | #I would say best new shows:
1 hour fiction: Puching Daisies and Chuck.
1/2 Comedy - Big Bang Theory
Reality Show - Kitchen Nightmares. I actually am missing this show since the new Hell's Kitchen started.
sac | Apr 15, 2008 6:37:18 AM | #I would say best new shows:
1 hour fiction: Pushing Daisies and Chuck.
1/2 Comedy - Big Bang Theory
Reality Show - Kitchen Nightmares. I actually am missing this show since the new Hell's Kitchen started.
sac | Apr 15, 2008 6:37:27 AM | #My favorite new show in 2007/2008 season is definately - PUSHING DAISIES.
Franko | Apr 15, 2008 7:04:42 AM | #There were a surprising amount of good new shows. It's hard to pick. I know Chuck and Pushing Daisies will be back. I hope we can add Eli Stone, Reaper and Aliens in America to the list.
If I had to pick one (and it's a very hard choice)it would have to be Chuck. The entire cast is great.
I forgot about Terminator. All in all a pretty good new crop of shows.
Chris C | Apr 15, 2008 7:28:05 AM | #Favorite new show --- tie between Chuck and Moonlight.
I've definitely been going through withdrawal pains!
Amy | Apr 15, 2008 7:56:35 AM | #Big Bang Theory is my favorite. It slays me every week! My favorite episode is when Sheldon was trying to explain why cyborgs would not have sent back a hot 17 year old terminator. Since the Sara Conner Chronicles is my second favorite new show it was just perfect.
Angie | Apr 15, 2008 8:38:03 AM | #I have two favorite new shows this season:
Moonlight
Chuck
The characters on both of them have caught my interest and I find myself wanting to know what will happen to each of them as the weeks go on.
Lynn D | Apr 15, 2008 8:48:01 AM | #Eli Stone made my top 3 new series, but it doesn't quite match up to Pushing Daisies or Chuck. It's close, though.
Dan | Apr 15, 2008 8:51:31 AM | #There were a lot of shows I enjoyed. My favs have been Pushing Daisies and Chuck. And I agree with a previous poster, as much as I love PD, I could do without the constant voiceover. not a fan of those, lol. But I also loved Journeyman and wish somebody else would pick it up. I really enjoy Eli, Canterbury Law and Life. I do hope that Eli and Canterbury will be picked up. Amy, dark chocolate doesn't have calories at all....and it is the cure all for everything...my story and I'm sticking to it.
serene | Apr 15, 2008 9:01:59 AM | #AMY: I started watching Eli Stone because of the very talented cast (mainly Jonny Lee Miller and Victor Garber), but I gave up on it mid-season. As some other viewers have noted, the writers made too many mistakes regarding the US legal system, even if part of the show is supposed to be "supernatural". I still really like Eli and Jordan's characters.
My favorite new show was Journeyman. I loved how each episode was a stand-alone, but there was also a continuing mystery about why Dan was chosen to be a time traveler. Also, the acting was excellent, especially by the underrated Kevin McKidd. Sadly, NBC gets three times the number of viewers for the mindless Deal or No Deal than for a quality drama like Journeyman.
Coming in a close second, is Chuck. It was the perfect combination of comedy, action and sci-fi. My favorite new show on cable is Burn Notice (how can not love a show with Bruce Campbell?).
Paige | Apr 15, 2008 9:02:59 AM | #Ironically, I wrote about this exact subject in my blog today, (click on my name to check it out) as I do every year about this time.
This year was a lot harder to narrow it down then it normally is, probably because the writers strike shortened things up not giving us the number of episodes that usually clarify where shows should stand. As it was, there were about ten shows I felt worthy of mentioning this year. The winner though, for me, is no question Journeyman. I will greatly miss it.
Josh Man | Apr 15, 2008 9:39:15 AM | #I'm with some of the other posters who cannot pick just one favorite - if I absolutely HAD to do it I think it would be "Pushing Daisies" by the very, VERY narrowest of margins. Chi McBride and Kristin Chenoweth, oh and Swoosie Kurtz all make me laugh so I guess they are my determining factors.
The other very worthy contenders (in no particular order 'cause they are all so close) are "Moonlight," "Life," "Samantha Who" and "Eli Stone." I SO wanted to be able to add "Private Practice" because I heart Kate Walsh but she honestly belongs back on "Grey's Anatomy." I find that I only LIKE "PP" - I don't love it and that makes me sad.
But I hope that the 2 shows I mentioned that haven't been renewed by their networks ("Eli" and "Moonlight") get the green light SOON and will be back next season.
And since I love dark chocolate, I am going to have to visit Amy's world...
Ginni | Apr 15, 2008 9:39:35 AM | #late to the party, but after watching Sunday's episode of Eli Stone, I can say it's my favorite new show of the season. even my husband said "this is a pretty good show!" and he can't sit still for very much.
eb
erinb | Apr 15, 2008 9:48:36 AM | #TV Gal, you are right on the money! I would have to say before Eli Stone came out my answer would have to be (hands down) Pushing Daisys. Then Lost came back on TV and Eli Stone followed it. I have it on TiVo and love it. I can not wait for the next episode. It was a treat to have two in one week but I am sad to see this is the last episode this season. I have been on an e-mail campaign to ABC to make sure Eli is on their schedule in the fall. My only comment would be to change the time. If possible a move to 9PM would be perfect. I will take Eli Stone on any night or at any time. What an expected treat!
Kville
Journeyman
October Road
Looks like it will be tough for me!
It was a tough one for fav new show, seeing as I watch Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Reaper...
And normally I go for the can't miss shows, like Heroes, where if you miss an episode, you are lost. Even thought Pushing Daisies doesn't require me to watch every week, I just want to. I love this show, because it constantly cheers me up and entertains me, no matter what my mood. Eli Stone is quickly becoming just like that, it is just taking a little longer to get there. These are two shows will be on my have to watch list for next season... and they better both have next seasons...
Definitely Chuck.
I also enjoy Breaking Bad, Reaper (love the addition of the demon neighbours!), and surprisingly New Amsterdam.
PS Any news on Supernatural (it's back next week!) or BSG to pass on?
lostalias | Apr 15, 2008 10:36:43 AM | #My favorite new show of the season is New Amsterdam closely followed by The Terminator: SCC.
I hope they return.
In New Amsterdam I love the flashbacks and contrast from history to what's happening today. I like John's story and I love Eva. The Terminator just rocks. I'm tired of the boring same old shows on TV and Terminator packs in the action.
Michele | Apr 15, 2008 10:57:12 AM | #Chuck is my favorite new show in 2007-2008
Valerie | Apr 15, 2008 11:14:51 AM | #Love Eli Stone!
Please bring him back and a smile to my face :-)
Victor Garber has yet to sing Carelss Whisper ... Emmy for him right now!
Cat | Apr 15, 2008 11:19:58 AM | #Chuck is my favorite new show too!
Lauren B | Apr 15, 2008 11:22:40 AM | #Chuck! Best new show, I'm very sad it's season got cut short, but very happy it is returning. I do enjoy Eli Stone too. Sunday's episode was great and I can't wait until the finale. Watch Sunday's ep if you forgot it was on!
Ron | Apr 15, 2008 11:34:24 AM | #My favorite was Journeyman, still hoping it will be picked up by another channel. Also liked Pushing Daisies (so original), Mad Men, Burn Notice,Dirty Sexy Money and New Amsterdam. For comedies I like Samantha Who, Miss Guided & Carpoolers.
I agree with Ginni that I was disappointed in Private Practice-send Addison back to Greys!
What about a reconfigured
"Women's Murder Club"
with Cameron/Terminator (Summer Glau) Temperance/Bones (Emily Deschanel and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo). Can you imagine their conversations.
Eli Stone is one of my favorite new shows (in a season of a lot of good new shows, Chuck, Big Bang Theory, Life, Sarah Conner, etc, etc). I love the heart that it shows. It a Lawyer show where I like all the characters. Victor Garbor’s line on Sunday Night (I’d like a recount) after the earthquake was outstanding.
I’m truly buying into the love triangle. I can’t decide who I want Eli to choose. A great show!
Eli Stone is not only my favorite new show of the season, but has quickly joined my Top 5 overall. It's right there with Criminal Minds, Two and a Half men, How I Met your Mother, and 24 (whenever that comes back on). Great writing, great characters, creative legal cases without dumbing down the audience. I honestly think it's the near perfect show.
John D | Apr 15, 2008 2:32:53 PM | #Burn Notice was a great show last year and I can't wait to see it again this summer. Chuck and Reaper were easily my two favorites from the Fall - I like the humor in them. :)
Chelsea | Apr 15, 2008 5:51:10 PM | #Oh gosh, so many shows are my new favorites! lol. Well, here's my list: Eli Stone tops the list, then comes Private Practice, Moonlight, Terminator, and New Amsterdam. All of which are shows that will return. I refuse so accept anything to the contrary.
And I'm so glad Bones is back! And I love Sweets! I love all the shows that guy is in. Freeks and Geeks was totally cut short, man.
Noelle | Apr 15, 2008 8:20:16 PM | #LIFE wins it for me this year. I like Coster-Waldau in New Amsterdam, but I can't get past the main theme of the show: a 400 year-old-man who wants to find the right woman so he can die. That's a downer for me. On the other hand, LIFE is about someone who has been through hell and wants to find the joy in every day of life. The eleven episodes we got to see this year make a stunning miniseries.
mindmat | Apr 15, 2008 9:17:40 PM | #Best new show: LIFE
In fact, LIFE is one of my 5 all-time favorite shows. Charlie Crews is just the best character--he's really walking a fine line between desire for justice and vengeance, between anger and healing, and he knows it. Also, love the soundtrack on the original episodes. The music really enhances the show.
My favorite new show was Journeyman; loved the storyline, loved the family.
I also really like Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, Reaper, and Chuck. A good year, I guess.
And -- it's a mini-series so it doesn't count, but, hey, some new series don't get seven episodes -- John Adams. I expected it to be interesting, but I didn't expect it to be so entertaining! It is utterly fascinating, and I'm so glad it was made.
jds | Apr 15, 2008 10:32:47 PM | #Quote of the week:
Samantha to Funk: I smell cupcakes...are you so rich that you smell like cupcakes?
Funk: Yes, I am...
tj | Apr 15, 2008 11:51:41 PM | #I'm so happy that Bones has moved up your listen! It's one of my favorite shows!
As for the best new show this season, I would say Chuck, with Samantha Who a very close second, followed by Eli Stone. ABC must bring back Johnny Lee Miller!! It was awesome watching him as Eli after Smith was cancelled.
Karen | Apr 16, 2008 1:58:53 AM | #My favourite series has got to be Eli Stone too. I've always though George Michael is a *Vision*, I can relate! ;o)
Benedita | Apr 16, 2008 4:18:29 AM | #I did not get into Pushing Daisies, Dirty, Sexy, Money or Chuck... am I the only one? LOL!
My new favorite shows this season are Journeyman (such a shame they didn't pick it up), Moonlight, and Reaper.
Out of the three, Journeyman was appointment tv for me. They made a huge mistake cancelling it, IMO.
I didn't really get into Eli Stone either... I liked how it sounded on paper and thought I would love it... but it didn't grab me.
Tracey P. | Apr 16, 2008 6:05:27 AM | #I'm so with you, Amy! Eli Stone has grabbed a piece of my heart. I thought I would hate it; it sounded like an Ally McBeal knock off ... but unlike others here, I think it is far more substantial and creative than that show ever was. I will miss it muchly. It *must* get picked up!
My other season favorites were Life (have to agree that it will be an all-time fav)and Burn Notice. Both shows have fantastic casts and great concepts.
I also set the DVR for Chuck, Pushing Daisies, Terminator, Samantha Who, and Bones. It was a better than usual year, even with the strike.
spuffy | Apr 16, 2008 6:18:22 AM | #Chuck is my favorite new show this season. I love Eli Stone, though, too. And Samantha Who?
Jeanne | Apr 16, 2008 7:17:45 AM | #It's already been gone a long time and won't be back until next season, but my favorite new show of the season was Life.
Glenn | Apr 16, 2008 7:32:35 AM | #I do love Eli Stone! I was happy to see it most likely will be back next season!! YEAH!
As for the finale and the surgery, I think they won't be able to remove it during surgery, so it will be back next season too!!
As much as I love Eli, I think my most favorite new show this season was LIFE. I simply cannot wait til it returns!!!!!
Jolly | Apr 16, 2008 7:42:54 AM | #I really liked ER last week. It was mostly a solid episode, although I could've done without the opening scene with the new doc (ewww).
I liked the Tony and Sam scene at the end. I don't think those two are great together, but it was nice to see Linda Cardellini showing some skin. But really, the show needs to stop having so many sex scenes and focus more on medical storylines. The heart transplant storyline, for example, was really good. That is the kind of storyline I watch ER for.
And yes, I think Maura Tiernney needs to win on emmy.
She actually should have an entire shelf full of them by now. She definately deserves one this year. Let's hope she doesn't get snubbed again.
My favorites would be "Mad Men", "Breaking Bad", "Damages, "Friday Night Lights" and "Battlestar Galactica". All five of those shows were absolutely riveting. Things like Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, even high quality shows like Pushing Daisies feel like fluff compared to those shows.
I'd also perhaps include "Tell Me You Love Me", "In Treatment" and "Journeyman", but I didn't want the list to get too long. :D
BobDob | Apr 16, 2008 8:28:11 AM | #I tend not to favor comedies over dramas, but if I had to choose my favorite among those this past year, I'd say "The Office", "Aliens in America", "Flight of the Conchords" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."
BobDob | Apr 16, 2008 8:31:31 AM | #My faves are, in no particular order:
Eli Stone
Life
Dirty Sexy Money
Burn Notice
Army Wives
New Amsterdam
Samantha Who
This is the second season (I believe) for October Road, and I am afraid it is not coming back - I've watched since the beginning and my daughter is hooked as well.
Same with Men in Trees. :(
Chuck is by far my favorite new show of the season. It's even better on a second viewing.
Guilty pleasures are Gossip
Girl and Moonlight.
The standards are Battlestar Galactica, Robin Hood (BBC), Bones, NCIS and Supernatural.
Kalena | Apr 16, 2008 9:13:21 AM | #Eli would by far be my favorite new show, but since you mentioned that I get another pick. (Yes, I'm making up my own rules. Go ahead and try to stop me!)
I loved Miss Guided. Funny, quirky, smartly written, full of good ol' 80s nostalgia, unique... so probably doomed.
Runner-Up Favorite new show would be Chuck.
Best New Show That I've Already Said Goodbye To: Journeyman
Least Favorite New Show I Liked At First But Quickly Grew Sick Of: Pushing Daisies. SO delightful it made me angry.
CT | Apr 16, 2008 12:44:04 PM | #I liked Big Bang theory the best. :) the chemistry between the characters is so cool!!!
I've always heard so much about this Journeyman show. I never did watch it. but now it sounds like it's not even coming back. oh well.
I read in our local newspaper only the other day about a show called Samantha Who? it sounded really interesting. but I haven't seen that one either.
oh well.
it's too bad that the writers strike took such a big bite out of the TV season. I can't help but wonder what could have been and / or might have been if the season hadn't been shortened like it was...
there's this other program called CANE with Jimmy Smits that I really enjoyed. but I'm guessing they cancelled that one too. although they did have like one episode (at the end) that explained a few things/ and kind of tied up the loose ends.
My favorite new shows for 2007-2008 are
1) Life - can't wait for the fall when this show comes back
2) Burn Notice - new episodes this summer
3) Moonlight
Good crop of newbs this season! My favorites are:
1) Life
2) Terminator
3) Burn Notice
4) Journeyman
5) Reaper
Eli Stone - definitely my #1 (and this from a gal who hasn't watched ABC since they took Invasion off!)
2. Samantha Who?
3. Chuck
4. Reaper (Tyler Labine - told ya I missed Invasion!)
Chile: I liked Big Shots too. It was not my favorite show but I watched it loyally and I thought it had started to hit its stride.
If you had asked me a couple months ago, I would have said: Chuck and Dirty Sexy Money would have tied for favorite new show, followed closely by Gossip Girl, Moonlight and Greek. But then something miraculous happened: I met an incredibly loveable attorney/possible-reluctant-prophet named Eli Stone and the love I have for him left the love I felt for all other shows in the dust. Until ABC renews this unrated mid-season gem, I am packing a bag and my DVR and moving into Amy’s reality.
In the 1 hour category, Pushing Daisies by a long shot. It's the first truly unique concept to come along in a while. Eli Stone, New Amsterdam, Journeyman, and Terminator follow. Also, don't forget the Summer Shows - Saving Grace and Burn Notice were both great TV.
Journeyman took a while to catch its stride, but ended up quite good. We watched Dirty Sexy Money for a while, but it got repetitive. Same with Reaper, which could have been a male version of Buffy but missed the mark somewhere along the line. Cashmere Mafia was fun, but wasn't on long enough to decide if it was a keeper.
In the 1/2 hour realm, Big Bang Theory followed by Samantha Who. Both are basic and somewhat formulaic, but the cast and writing keep them fun to watch anyway. Neither is as good as Arrested Development was!
Mike F. | Apr 17, 2008 11:13:35 AM | #my favorate new show: Damages on FX. So glad it's picked up for two more seasons.

to geeks to housewives to chefs, and all the rest. I'm
sick of all the reality shows,
along comes a real interesting show with great acting and writing AND....
Nobody watches it!! Amazing!
Hands down, the best new show was----JOURNEYMAN !!!
Eli Stone rocks! I'm really gonna miss it and hope that ABC does the smart thing and picks it up.
I also liked New Amsterdam, Reaper, Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Linda | Apr 17, 2008 8:02:45 PM | #Please bring back the wonderful Eli Stone. The last episode was brilliant! Feelgood Show of the year, the best of the new shows this year!
CAT | Apr 18, 2008 7:04:16 AM | #Eli Stone is definitely my favorite new show of the past several years! I enjoy everything about it and those who say it has gotten better with each episode are totally right! Please ABC - Give us more Eli Stone!
Eileen | Apr 18, 2008 8:47:59 AM | #"ELI STONE" is my favorite new show, by far. "NEW AMSTERDAM" is pretty good but ELI is great.
David Mochel | Apr 18, 2008 2:46:43 PM | #does anyone else think that john's soulmate is his new partner? i'm talking about new amsterdam here. i don't really like the doctor that much anyway.
carrie | Apr 18, 2008 4:51:26 PM | #I think that Eli Stone is awesome and it makes me cry- which is so ridiculous... it might be that Eli Stone has low-ratings on Thursday at 10 or 9 or whatever- I don't even know because I watch it online. I watch all television online because commercials are only 30 - 60 seconds long. I won't even tune in for the return of Grey's- I'll watch it online, for certain. And I want to watch Eli Stone via the internet forever. Does anyone who matters actually read this posting? I hope ABC is listening. And isn't New Amsterdam a rip off of that book by Pete Hamill: "Forever"?
Bronwyn Loughren | Apr 18, 2008 7:52:08 PM | #Life turned to be one of the best new shows during the 2007-2008 line up and to this day I'm still in love with both show and characters. Also, the music in the original broadcast really enhanced the show a lot. Other contenders are: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Burn Notice, Samantha Who and Gossip Girls.
Monic | Apr 18, 2008 11:47:36 PM | #Amy - Had you seen the season finale of Eli Stone when you wrote this column? The reason I ask is that I'm finding it hard to believe that the first line in this column is a coincidence with its use in the season finale.
Melanie | Apr 19, 2008 9:20:02 AM | #I kind of totally heart Eli Stone too. Any show that has Victor Garber singing on a semi-regular basis AND makes a Veronica Mars reference is awesome in my book.
I hope ABC decides to give it a second chance. I mean, look at what they're doing for Scrubs.
I personally would love to see a Pushing Daisies / Eli Stone / Dirty Sexy Money line-up.
Sorry... 2 episodes of Eli Stone were all I could handle. My "Best New Shows" list:
Damages
Breaking Bad
Journeyman
Mad Men
Samantha Who?
Pushing Daisies
Sarah Connor Chronicles
New Amsterdam
I also really enjoy The Riches, but I guess that can't be considered a new show anymore.
Ronald | Apr 19, 2008 2:18:22 PM | #Favorite new shows?
1. Greek
2. Pushing Daisies
3. Reaper
4. Chuck
5. Gossip Girl
6. Damages
7. Aliens In America
8. Dirty Sexy Money
9. Back To You
10. Mad Men
Best new shows:
1. Eli Stone
2. Life
3. Women's Murder Club
4. Canterbury's Law
5. Mad Men
I liked Chuck, Reaper, and Daisies initially, but got tired of them after they became so repetitious.
I am SOOOO tired of reality shows. Please, programming gods, give us some quality scripted shows this fall!
Suzee | Apr 20, 2008 4:36:53 PM | #Best New Shows
1 Eli Stone (by far!)
2 Pushing Daisies
3 Damages
4 Dirty Sexy Money
5 Private practice/ Samantha who?
Eli Stone is definitely in my top 5 shows for the year including oldies like Lost and Grey's... Other notable new shows this year are Big Bang Theory and Terminator.

Kim | Apr 22, 2008 7:00:35 PM | #Yes Victor Garbor should get an Emmy, he has been amazing.
And Eli Stone has grown into a fantastic show. Hope it stays on the air. One big name signing and bits and pieces here and there and we have the perfect FEEL GOOD show!
ELI 100% No question!!

Ciaran | Apr 23, 2008 4:46:06 PM | #As far as new shows this season are concerned, it is hard to choose just one favorite. In my opinion, this season just had way too many really good new shows: Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who, The Big Bang Theory, Chuck, and Sarah Conner Chronicles. And then we also had entertaining but not necessarily good quality shows: Gossip Girl, Private Practice, Cashmere Mafia. I'm just getting into Misguided, Aliens in America, and Moonlight. (ok i watch way too much tv) The writers strike really put a damper on this season because i thought it might have been one of the best tv seasons ever. even the returning shows were really good this season. So can i choose just one favorite? No and luckily i dont have to thanks to the magic of dvr's (and mine can record up to 4 shows at once!)
tvaddict | Apr 24, 2008 7:00:16 AM | #Top 1 has to be Pushing Daisies, followed very closely by Eli Stone, Technically Greek, Dirty Sexy Money and Reaper. Honorable mention goes to the big bang theory for actually working.
Just another thought, really you think Gaby has become to shallow? She's always been shallow, her response to Carlos, i felt, was really believable, the way first she was angry and vengefull, but it wasn't at the thought of being tied to a blind guy with no prospects for the rest of her life, it was because he lied. The way her face softened and she held him, to me sold it. The letting him still eat the dogfood, classic and funny. Gaby did get to shallow, but not with Carlos.
Wayne | Apr 24, 2008 1:03:43 PM | #Favorite NEW series of 2007-2008, it's hard to pick 1. For me, this has been the BEST season for new shows. Mad Men, Eli Stone, Journeyman, Cuck, Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Samantha Who, Sarah Conner Chronicles, Reaper, Damages & New Amsterdam. The first 3 I wrote down were the ones I couldn't miss a second of the story.
Buffybot | Apr 24, 2008 2:03:29 PM | #Number One!!! Eli Stone
No. 2 if allowed Chuck
Wasn't Shark a new show this year? It was for me. That would be my FirstChoice but maybe I'm the only one who loved it.
Far and away, my favorite new show this year is "Back To You", and I'm SHOCKED that it only made two other peoples' lists. Such a hilarious, smartly-written, perfectly-casted show! PLEASE check out a couple of episodes if you haven't already. If you think about it, it takes some pretty damn good writing and acting to see Kelsey Grammer and Patti Heaton and believe them as characters OTHER than Frasier Crane and Debra Barone, but this show totally pulls it off. And Fred Willard is brilliant - I've always liked him (how can you not?), but LOVE him in this. Josh Gad and Ty Burrell are awesome as well.
Also really enjoyed a lot of the other shows mentioned - DSM, Journeyman (SO good), Sam Who?, Terminator, Chuck, Reaper, Big Bang.
Cane started off slow, but got really good - same with Big Shots, which really surprised me. Bionic Woman showed a lot of promise with its great pilot, but never quite lived up to it. LOVED Miss Guided, but it didn't seem to make a big enough splash that I expect to see it back. I liked Lipstick Jungle way more than I expected to. Private Practice is just kind of okay, not nearly as good as it could be with such a great cast(even though they re-cast Merrin Dungey's part).
I tried to watch the pilot of Eli Stone, but just couldn't get into it. Based on all the raves here, though, I'm gonna download a few episodes and give it another try. It may just be that my head was swimming from the "Lost" episode that preceded it, and I just couldn't process anything else. I'm glad they moved Lost to the end of the lineup on Thursdays, because it's been SO good this year that my brain can't handle anything after it.
