Pucker Up . . . TV's Best Kisses

Veronicamars_jasondohring_k It's been awhile since I've done this column but the end of the writer’s strike has me totally feeling the love for all things TV. So in honor of Valentine’s Day, their kiss, their kiss is on my list.

Sometimes a television kiss is the butterflies-in-your-stomach, toes-curled, heart-go-pitter-patter kind of lip lock that is so real that we actually have to remind ourselves that we are watching entirely fictional characters.

Here are some of my all time favorite TV kisses (and if you’ve been reading my column for awhile, you’ve definitely seen some of these before).

1. Veronica and Logan on Veronica Mars in "M.A.D." Sigh. Jason Dohring is the only actor I’ve ever met and actually blushed while I was talking to him. I blame this sexy scene that found Logan and Veronica kissing in the Neptune High bathroom.

2. Jim and Pam on The Office in "Casino Night:" In a surprise move (we think he’s going to tell her about his new job), Jim confesses his love for Pam and kisses her. It was so painfully real, that our hearts broke right along with his.

3. Sydney and Vaughn on Alias in "Double Agent": After finally getting together in "Phase One," viewers are treated to this little seduction scene in Sydney’s kitchen.

4. Buffy and Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer in "Tabula Rasa": As the camera panned away from Michelle Branch singing the apropos "Goodbye to You," and snuck around the corner, viewers saw Spike and Buffy hungrily kissing. The lustful duo have had their share of fiery moments (and sweet ones like in "Once More With Feeling"), but this kiss demonstrated their mutual attraction at its most base level.

5. Kate and Sawyer on Lost in "Confidence Man:" Sure they only kissed because Sawyer said he wouldn’t give up his stolen goods unless he got to lock lips with Kate. But it was a sizzling screen moment.

6. Mulder and Scully in The X-Files in "Existence": We knew they had to be in love. We just knew it. When Mulder leaned down and kissed Scully over their love child, we finally had the proof we had been waiting for.

7. Pacey and Joey on Dawson’s Creek in "Stolen Kisses": In the best story line to ever come out of "The Creek" Pacey falls for his best friend’s girl. After telling our Pacey that he makes her feel alive, he announces that he’s going to start kissing her in ten seconds and begins counting . . .

8. Kevin and Scotty on Brothers & Sisters in "Date Night:" Their relationship is groundbreaking in its utter normalcy. Who couldn’t relate when Scotty said, "I love this part when you look at someone and they don't look away." Scotty, I love it too.

9. Ross and Rachel on Friends in "The One Where Ross Finds Out": Sure, by the time the series ended we were so over this couple we needed a new word for over. But on November 9, 1995, Ross and Rachel were television’s It Couple. After a drunken Rachel leaves a message on Ross’s machine that she’s over him, Ross utters the classic line "You’re over me? When we’re you under me?" Then he goes to the Central Perk and looks longingly at her through the window, Rachel wrestles with the locks, before flinging open the doors. The two kiss in the pouring rain. Years later, that moment is still perfect.

10. Doug and Carol on ER in "Such Sweet Sorrow": Standing out on the dock, Doug kissed the woman he had redeemed himself for and asked the simple question, "Where are the girls?" George Clooney’s surprise appearance remains one of television’s best kept secrets. It was such a great moment that I completely forgave Doug for never coming back for the birth of the twins.

11. David and Maddie on Moonlighting in "I am curious . . . Maddie": Known as the "Big Bang" episode among fans, David and Maddie finally sleep together in a scene that literally takes down the house. The show went downhill after this, but we at least got to see the pair happy for a night.

Those are some of my favorite TV kisses. What are yours? Talk about your favorite TV kisses below and have a very Happy Valentine’s Day.

Where Have I Seen Them Before?

Laurasilverman_thesarahsilvermanpro DJ recognized Laura Silverman as the orthodox Jewish woman on House. She’s Sarah Silverman’s real life sister and she plays her on TV in The Sarah Silverman Program.

Kathie recognized a slew of familiar faces on Psych. Amanda Detmer, Deena on What About Brian, was the woman who killed her husband. Melanie Lynskey, Rose on Two and a Half Men and Wendy on Drive, was the assistant. And Amanda Pays, Corbin Bernsen’s real life wife, was the blind date.

David recognized Maggie Siff as burn victim Rachel Ben Natan on nip/tuck. She’s Rachel Menken on Mad Men and we saw her as the runner who was starving herself to gain her fiance’s approval earlier this season on Grey’s Anatomy.

Michelle was all over the return of the primetime soap vixens on nip/tuck. Donna Mills (Abby on Knots Landing) was the wealthy socialite who wanted a feline face. Joan Van Ark (Val on Knots Landing), Shari Belafonte (Julie on Hotel) and Deborah Shelton (Mandy on Dallas) played her friends. I have to say I’ve officially broken up with nip/tuck and a story line about a woman wanting a cat face isn’t exactly enticing me to tune back in.

Michael Weston is Hope’s brother on Welcome to the Captain. We saw him last season as Private Brian Dancer on Scrubs and he was Jake, the guy who terrorized David, on Six Feet Under.

Ask TV Gal

Miller_elistone_240 I noticed that the set for WPK Law Firm in Eli Stone looks a lot the set used for Wolfram and Hart on Angel. Are they the same? Greg

I actually had quite a few people asking me this question so I looked into it and found out that the set on Eli Stone was built for the show. So, although they look similar, they are officially not the same set.

That’s all for today. I’ll be back on Friday with quotes of the week and to talk about Hollywood Week on American Idol (I miss the group performances too!). Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week? Have a topic you want to see the group discus? Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Talk to you on Friday.

Yeah, I know I am getting old. Loved Logan and Veronica, too.

That "forced" kiss of Seely and Temperance on Bones was PRETTY damn hot, and the setup was hilarious...

Number 1 on my list is also a Veronica and Logan kiss, but it's their first one, the one outside of the motel room after Logan shows up to deck the undercover agent that kidnapped Veronica in "Weapons of Class Destruction."

I also liked the Bones kiss! But I can't wait to see it happen "for real."

For those looking for info on what their favorite shows will be doing now that the strike's over, I found the following web page with lots of info on it:

http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Ausiello-Report/Wga-Strike-Favorite/800032698

And just so I'm not totally off topic, while it's not a "romantic moment" type of kiss, the forced kiss between Captain Kirk and Uhura in the original Star Trek was certainly a noteworthy moment in TV history.

Oh man I have to say Booth and Brennan on Bones!! That was incredible, and now just think about how this could affect them when the show returns...

Amen on 1-3!! The chemistry between those pairs was amazing! I also definitely agree on 4,5,and 8, but the rest were all a little before my time (though I have seen a couple of them).

Sarah | Feb 13, 2008 12:28:39 PM | #

Thanks for letting us know that was Amanda Pays, Corbin Bernsen’s wife, as the blind date on Psych. I hadn't realized that.

Loretta | Feb 13, 2008 12:31:42 PM | #

Actually, I agree with Andrea - I probably enjoyed Veronica and Logan's first kiss outside the hotel room the most too. I first watched it on DVD, and I had to pause and rewind and watch it again to convince myself it wasn't my imagination! It was just so automatic that I was shocked and thrilled at the same time!

Just a comment on #10, the episode where "George Clooney makes a surprise return appearance" on ER - how was this a surprise to anyone? They announced in Jan of that year that he would be appearing in Carol's (Juliana Marguiles') final episode? Juliana made mention of it in numerous appearances on shows like ET and late night talk shows. I'm still confused as to how anyone was ever 'surprised' by that cameo. Maybe they tried to deny it later to make it a surprise, but I never believe denials until they are proven to be true.

Re: The Friends kiss - I always liked that one best also, but I think more people favour the "Prom Video" episode kiss more. Prom Video kiss happened after the one in TV Gal's column.

What about Luke and Lorelai's kiss on the series finale of "Gilmore Girls" as one of the greatest kisses ever?!?!?

guilty pleasure | Feb 13, 2008 1:06:58 PM | #

I have to agree with Andrea C on the Veronica and Logan kiss. When he whips her around and kisses her, it's got to be one of the most spine tingeling kisses ever (all though the vast majority of their kisses were pretty darn hot).

I also really loved Dan and Serena's first kiss on Gossip Girl. It was adorable and the setting was absolutely beautiful.

While I would agree that the Logan and Veronica Kiss was great and the Brennan and Booth kiss was totally hot this first kiss between Buffy and Angel always make me melt.

Now that the strike is over I am most curious to find out which shows are going to make it back for the fall season. I am nervous that some of the new shows that I was just beginning to get into will not get a second season.

Hettie | Feb 13, 2008 1:12:36 PM | #

I also want to put my vote in for Dana and Casey in "Special Powers" on Sports Night. "You do not mess with the statute of limitations!"

Kathleen | Feb 13, 2008 1:18:49 PM | #

How about Luke and Lorelai's first kiss outside of the Inn.

With regards to Rachel & Ross's kisses - I think the one of the prom video was not the episode after the one mentioned in the column but two episodes afer the one with the List....
And how about Monica and Chandler's kiss when he admits to everyone he loves her.

Ooo. I second the first Buffy/Angel kiss. Actually, I think it was their second kiss. I believe they first kissed in Buffy's bedroom right before Buffy found out Angel was a vampire. The one I'm thinking of was at the end of the episode at the Bronze. The song playing in the background was perfect and the kiss was so sweet and full of what they know could never be. Then, when they pull away and see the burn mark of Buffy's cross. Squee! I've got to watch that episode tonight.

Julie | Feb 13, 2008 1:44:37 PM | #

Amy, I can't believe you didn't mention Josh And Donna's FINALLY kiss on The West Wing. You loved it when it happened. :-)

Jan | Feb 13, 2008 1:47:20 PM | #

I love Logan and Veronica, but I think the kiss in Weapons of Mass Destruction is far hotter than the bathroom kisses.

I would also nominate the skipping-geometry-review-basement-kisses of Jordan and Angela.

Andrea | Feb 13, 2008 1:56:41 PM | #

I have to agree with the Logan and Veronica kiss outside the motel. Whenever, best kiss is mentioned I think of that one. It was surprising, sweet, hot everything rolled into one. But like said previously, all their kisses were amazing.

Sarah | Feb 13, 2008 2:07:09 PM | #

Screw romance! Let's go with the kiss on "The O.C." that screamed "BUSTED:"

Julie Cooper (Melinda Clark) kissing jail-bait, boy toy Luke (Chris Carmack) in the doorway of the cheap motel Both were unaware that Seth and Ryan (Julie's daughter's boyfriend) were looking on in stunned horror.

I dedicate that memory to TV Gal.

Dex | Feb 13, 2008 2:11:24 PM | #

I would definitely have to agree with the Pacey/Joey "10" kiss from "Stolen Kisses". Even though that episode aired many years ago, I still watch it today with the same enjoyment I had back in 2000. What a great beginning to the BEST storyline in that entire show. That kiss alone showed without a doubt that those two should and would end the series together. I also have to agree with the poster that mentioned the "Raincoats & Recipes" Luke/Lorelai kisses. We fans waited so long for that moment. It's a pity we were robbed of their "middle".

modo | Feb 13, 2008 2:14:32 PM | #

I still think my favorite kiss on TV was when Tony and Michelle finally got together in season 2. They were in that dark hallway and Michelle was telling Tony how bad her day was (because, duh--all days are bad on "24"). Her brother had just tried to kill someone, the whole place was a wreck, she was "so tired" and all of a sudden he hugged her and then she kissed him...I don't even remember everything, but I was just like, "AAAAAH!" even though it was like in the middle of season 5 when I first watched it and Michelle was already dead and gone.

I also love when they get together at the end of season 4--that one made me cry I think becaus she thought he was dead for awhile and then--ahh, I just love it so much.

Lauren B | Feb 13, 2008 3:14:58 PM | #

Definitely agree that the Logan/Veronica kiss outside the motel was amazing!

Also want to throw my support to the P/J kiss in Stolen Kisses.

These two episodes are my favorite, and get re-watched on DVD every once in a while.

Thanks for this column--Amy, it reminds me what good tv used to be!

angela | Feb 13, 2008 3:21:42 PM | #

Any love for Torchwood here? Jack Harkness has had several amazing kisses . . .

1) with the soldier he took his name from.

2) with James Marsters on the Season 2 premiere.

3) the most recent episode with Yanto.

I love that no matter how small the moment everytime Jack kisses someone it's incredible passionate.

Amy | Feb 13, 2008 3:24:00 PM | #

My vote is for the second Ross-Rachel kiss from the prom video episode. Much better kiss from an amazingly good episode.

I wasn't a fan of the Luke-Lorelai kiss in the finale of "Gilmore Girls." I loved that they finally got together, but I thought the kiss itself was a little awkward.
