Let's forgive Friday Night Lights
My New Year's resolution is to forgive Friday Night Lights. Won't you join me? It is so much easier than vowing to exercise every day.
So let’s wipe the slate clean, forgive Friday Night Lights for the unfortunate Landry storyline and move on to the next two oh-so-excellent episodes (Friday at 9 p.m. on NBC).
Here are the four main reasons you should tune in:
1. Tim Riggins: He's a great character and he's featured prominently in the next two episodes.
2. The return to football: Some of you have missed the games -- there's a big one coming next week.
3. The relationships: Mother/daughter, husband/wife, sibling, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, grandmother/grandson, best friends -- this show has it all.
4. Characters behaving badly: The best shows let their beloved characters behave in not so attractive ways. Keep an eye on Julie and Tammi this week.

Hi Amy,
What is going with Bones? When is the new episode going to air and are they permanently moving to Fridays? Don't tell me Fox is trying to kill this great show by moving it to the dead spot of the week?
Thanks, Brittany
This upcoming Tuesday (January 8), FOX will repeat the pilot episode of Bones at 8 p.m. and the pilot episode of House at 9 p.m. The following week, American Idol premieres and Bones moves to Friday at 8 p.m. and beginning on March 14, Bones will air at 9 p.m. This move appears to be permanent for the spring. The Bones episodes are repeats in January but Bones has three new episodes left. My guess is that those will air during February sweeps.
The Wire puts pretty much every other drama on TV to shame. The show is ridiculously under-viewed. Maybe an extra plug would bring some new viewers.
Derek
Derek, I so agree. So I will remind everyone that the fifth and final season of The Wire begins Sunday at 9 p.m. A recap of the first four seasons called The Wire Odessey airs Sunday at 8:15 p.m.and season four of The Wire is now out on DVD. Tune in. You won’t regret giving the show a chance.
I was wondering if you had seen the preview for season 4 of Veronica Mars on youtube and, if so, you could tell me who the guy who was her partner that didn't like her is in real life. Thanks,
Liz
Well I have to admit it was hard for me to actually watch the pitch executive producer Rob Thomas did for season four because as we know season four wasn’t picked up and it seemed liked cruel and unusual punishment to get a peak at what could have been. And I was right, the preview is excellent and it certainly looks like a season four would have been great. I think it’s a must see for fans and now that season three has been released on DVD you can see Rob Thomas’ entire pitch. But to answer Liz’s question, there were many familiar faces in the season four pitch. Adam Kaufman played Veronica’s partner who didn’t want to be partnered with her. Kaufman was Parker on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ethan on Dawson’s Creek, and we’ve just seen him on Without a Trace as Brian, the father of Samantha’s baby. And fun fact – Kaufman is Poppy Montgomery’s real life boyfriend. Walton Goggins, Shane on The Shield, was Veronica’s boss and Bob Gunton, who played Noah Taylor on Desperate Housewives and Secretary of Defense Ethan Kanin on 24, was the principal Veronica took down.
Quote of the Week
"Omarosa, what’s the name , pondersosa? Whatever her name is, nobody knows who she is.. so Fuggadabouther!" Vincent Pastore on The Celebrity Apprentice. Thanks to Jeff for the quote.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
If you want to get a look at the series that premieres next Sunday, January 13, FOX is airing a sneak peak beginning at midnight ET Friday, January 4 and the preview will be available for 24 hours. You can check it out at http://tv.yahoo.com. Let me know what you think.
That’s all for today. I’ll be back on Monday with a review of the new season of Medium, thoughts on the return of One Tree Hill and the last new episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Don’t forget to watch Cashmere Mafia this Sunday at 10 p.m. (and for my review check out my post from December 31) and let me know what you think.
Have a question, seen a familiar face or want to nominate a quote of the week or have a question, write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com. Have a great weekend.
Adam Kaufman was also on S1 of VM as the artist boyfriend of the pregnant girl in The Girl Next Door.
Jen | Jan 4, 2008 11:36:44 AM | #Adam Kaufman was also air conditioner salesman who got Betty all hot and bothered on 'Mad Men' this season.
Abbie | Jan 4, 2008 11:47:35 AM | #Adam Kaufman was also in Taken as Dakota Fanning's father and now this is officially the Andy Kaufman page - he's been everywhere and is very cute which is why we all remember seeing him somewhere!
Solly | Jan 4, 2008 12:39:51 PM | #Sorry Amy. I just can't bring myself to watch FNL. While every so often a movie turned into a tv show turns out to be great, it is a rarity. That plus the fact that I just didn't like the movie. Yes, I was intrigued by the storyline and yes, I love football, but other than being impressed by Tim McGraw's role, I didn't like the movie. No FNL for me, but on the bright side, when the strike is resolved in 2009, maybe I'll get to watch Bones.
Allen | Jan 4, 2008 1:05:01 PM | #Watch it Allen. An hour of your life you will never wanna give back, I promise! Besides, Buffy was based on a movie and it was A-mazing
Caleb | Jan 4, 2008 2:08:32 PM | #Latest word (from Futon Critic) is that the remaining 'new' episodes of Bones will air on Mondays at 8 ET starting April 28. It will be the lead-in to Canterbury's Law.
Stewart | Jan 4, 2008 2:18:59 PM | #Hey I heard that the actress who played River on Firefly is in The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I can't remember her name -- wait, it is Summer Glau?
Anyway, does anyone know if she's in the new show? I can't tell from the one quick commercial I've seen.
Marianne | Jan 4, 2008 2:29:45 PM | #BTW, I'm so glad they are airing repeats of Bones. Maybe if I'm very lucky they'll show the three episodes of this season that I missed due to TiVo's betrayal. I know, I know, I can watch them on-line, but I only have internet at work. :-)
Marianne | Jan 4, 2008 2:31:24 PM | #Yes, Summer Glau (River on Firefly) is on the SCC.
RKM | Jan 4, 2008 3:01:36 PM | #Allen-FNL the TV show is so much different (and BETTER) than the movie. The TV is entirely fictional and set "now", where as the movie was based off the book, which was about a real city and real people in the 80's (I think it was the 80's). While I thought the movie was just OK, the TV show ROCKS.
Mandy | Jan 4, 2008 3:37:14 PM | #Mandy- I totally agree with your comments. I received the season one dvd for christmas and FNL is great watching it the second time around too. It never gets old.
Michelle | Jan 4, 2008 4:10:19 PM | #I had no interest in the FNL movie, or the TV show. Being Canadian, not an American football fan or Texan I had little interest. Then I took all the critics advice and decided to watch the first episode. I was hooked. Bought the DVD and watched the first season in 3 days.
I tell everyone I know who appreciates good TV to check it out.
Give this great show a chance.
Krissy | Jan 4, 2008 6:53:06 PM | #Summer Glau - I saw a really cool print ad with Summer Glau in The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She plays the robot from the future there to protect the boy.
The ad is in the TV Guide for next week toward the back of the issue.
Lisa | Jan 5, 2008 6:52:33 AM | #Amy, as much as I love and support FNL, I don't know how much more I can take when it comes to Tim Riggins. What else are they going to do to that poor guy?? Yes, on his best day he's still drunker than my uncle on Thanksgiving, and he's not exactly the guy you want to take home, but geez louise!! Troubles with his Dad, his brother, the creepy ferret guy, Lyla, not to mention Jason and Mexico and now, while just trying to do the right thing and protect the coach's ditzy daughter (sorry i just can't stand her), he gets kicked out of the only good thing that's happened to him. That storyline better get fixed by next week (I don't even want to think about what next week's previews implied) or I might have to actually go find a life on Friday nights.
jessie | Jan 5, 2008 11:42:50 AM | #The Wire isn't that great and I have absolutely no idea why everyone raves about it so often. The reason people don't watch isn't because they're racist, but because the show is largely devoid of likable characters. Yes, I only saw the fourth season, but I just don't see the appeal behind watching a bunch of corrupt politicians and amoral drug dealers.
Katherine | Jan 5, 2008 4:11:17 PM | #I was really disappointed in FNL this season...but this was the first episode of season 2 that I LOVED!
Can't wait for the next episode.
Kara | Jan 5, 2008 7:50:07 PM | #Can you cover 30 rock next week too? Thanks
chris | Jan 6, 2008 10:33:16 AM | #Happy New Year, Amy! You're off to a geat start!
What's happening with the Golden Globes tonight?
I'm all for forgiving Friday Night Lights for the questionable Landry storyline; it wasn't great, but at least we got more Landry! And hey, we met his dad to boot (the awesome Agent Aaron!), so I'd say it's a net gain for us FNL fans :)
Oh, and Happy New Year to Amy and all the readers! My resolution is to win the lottery and give the money to the Writers Guild so that we can get the strike over with!
Patrick | Jan 6, 2008 5:08:56 PM | #I don't think it will be as bad as the preview suggested. While the Coach will certainly want to keep Riggs away from Julie (whether or not he's interested), I think Coach will be upset to find Riggs living in the locker room and defend him when he's attacked on the field. The Coach is a fairly honorable man, who remained a father figure to Saracen even when he was upset about Matt and Julie possibly hooking-up.
| Jan 6, 2008 5:48:49 PM | #After Friday night's episode, I say forgive and forget. FNL is back to it's season 1 glory. Loved it!
A | Jan 7, 2008 7:16:50 AM | #I still love FNL, and even more now that the Landry Incident is finally over. I'm glad to see the writers giving more screen time to Tim, but I wish we could still see him hanging out with Jason as well.
I also want to see more interaction between Landry and Matt, but it was fun to see Landry and Julie sharing their breakup stories at the party. :-)
By the way, I'm looking forward to the premiere of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I like all the actors involved, so I hope the show lives up to its hype.
Paige | Jan 7, 2008 8:34:03 AM | #Just a correction...Fox is airing Bones/House on Tues Jan 8(its regular night.)
I still have hope for Bones to survive this threat to move to Friday. Fox did the same thing last year, and they've already reworked the announced schedule once, so maybe they'll do it again.
Nel | Jan 7, 2008 8:55:02 AM | #I don't need to forgive FNL. It was scary at first but I thought they pulled that story off fabulously! Jesse and Adrian both did some of their finest acting and both should be nominated for Emmy's. There is NOTHING bad about this show. I never thought that the writers couldn't pull that story off and they didn't disappoint!
buffybot | Jan 7, 2008 9:25:10 AM | #Katherine, I disagree entirely. The Wire is without a doubt the best show on television. What you're talking about, I consider depth of character. You're right, no character on this show is all good... or all bad. Turns out even corrupt politicians and drug dealers have decent moments and the "good guys" make mistakes and can be jerks too. I actually find nearly all characters on both sides likable. Maybe the reality of it gets to you, which is fine, but I don't think you can slam a wonderful, complicated, funny, heartbreaking show just because you prefer more idealist storytelling. Not a personal slam, I just think you've drastically oversimplified the show.
Also, coming in on season 4 would be disaster because you'd be lost as to character motivations and relationships. It'd be like picking up a book at chapter 8.
