A case of the TVBs . . . a review of "Moonlight"
I think I may have a case of the TVBs -- the TV Blahs.
I know, I know. How is that possible during premiere week? Our week of weeks? My most favorite time of the year.
Well last night I watched James Marsters ("Angel" and "Buffy") on "Without a Trace." Michael Vartan ("Alias") on "Big Shots" and then I popped in my review DVD of "Moonlight" (premiering Friday at 9 p.m. on CBS) which featured both Kevin Weisman (Marshall on "Alias") and Jason Dohring (Logan on "Veronica Mars."). So I got a chance to see actors from four of my all time favorite series in brand new roles.
And it left me with the TVBs because I realized there's no new series this season that has me as excited those series did ("Dirty Sexy Money" is the only show that even comes close). Where is my "Lost?" Where is my "Arrested Development?" Where is the show that makes me bolt up and think, "This could be a fantastic show."
I think it's really "Moonlight" that did me in. Because to criticize a show that features Dohring, who I really believe is one of the most talented actors out there, pains me. We know how good he can be. We've seen it.
But (heavy sigh) "Moonlight" looks as if it should be one of those syndicated shows you would watch on Saturday afternoon while cleaning your house. The dialogue is painful. The plot ridiculous. Dohring and star Alex O'Loughlin (who definitely has charm) do the most with what little they have, but this is simply not a good show. With apologies to my not-so-secret TV boyfriend, I'm giving "Moonlight" two stars.
What did you think of "Moonlight?" Post your comments below.

i'm loving three-times-a-week tv gal but i have to totally disagree with you on 'dirty sexy money'. i thought it was terrible. in fact i was just telling a friend who doesn't have a dvr that he can be glad he chose to watch 'life' on nbc instead.
i'm enjoying several of the new shows. - 'chuck', 'journeyman', 'bionic' and 'life' are all shows i'm looking forward to more of... and while i've heard a lot of mixed opinions on 'moonlight' i'll still give it a chance because of jason dohring.
That sucks because Moonlight was the main show I was looking forward to after the upfronts in May. But it sounds like they screwed it all up. Oh well...guess I'll find out this weekend (don't think I can watch it tonight).
Maybe I'll check out this Life on NBC. Sounds like a good premise for a show.
I don't disagree about Dirty Sexy Money - I absolutely loved it! Fantastic cast, sharp direction, smart writing. I often don't care for the problems of the rich (being poor myself) but the absurd humor combined with Krause's charming counterbalance helped.
Surprisingly, "Life" is my "wow" show so far. I've been disappointed with all of the other new shows.
I kind of agree about this TVB feeling. Most of these new shows, while nice ideas on paper, just don't seem to deliver the way I'd hoped.
But while I didn't watch Dirty Sexy Money, there was one show that I did fall in love with the pilot-- Reaper. It completely kept me interested and entertained more than any other new show I've seen. I really hope it keeps being good, because I'm worried that none of the other shows I started watching are going to get to that five-star level.
And I am also very disappointed by the bad reviews for Moonlight. As a big fan of Angel, I really wanted that to be good. :(
Loved Dirty Sexy Money. That and Chuck were my favorite premieres of the season (with Reaper right on up there.)
I had feeling Moonlight may suck. Poor Logan! On the upside, Dohring is a good actor so I believe he will land on his feet after Moonlight is yanked.
I can tell from the reviews already that "Life" is one of those love-it-or-hate-it shows. I love it. Yes, our hero chomps on a few too many pieces of fruit and the writers don't know nearly as much about Zen as the hero is supposed to, but still I thought it was fresh take on cop shows and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was not planning on watching Moonlight anyway. As much as I loved "Angel" and even "Forever Knight" really how many Vampire/Cop/PI shows can there be? And I agree there are not any new shows that I was eager for-not like returning shows. Though after watching "Journeyman" I was encouraged. But nothing is wowing me. Nothing yet at least.
I think I've had the TVBs for a few seasons. I remember the good old days when I knew what day it was by what I was going to watch that night, and the weekend was filled with watching the tapes of shows I had to record because of scheduling conflicts.
Now there are only 4 nights of television that has shows that I want to watch (if they swapped Journeyman for Bionic Woman, which I think would be a better companion for Heroes, I could knock it down to 3 nights)
