Jules Cobb from 'Cougar Town'

tvfashwn15.jpgIf we are to believe people who've recently turned 40, it's the new 30 (though some are now lobbying for it to be the new 25). But if we take a close look at Jules Cobb (Courteney Cox) of Cougar Town, Wednesdays on ABC, 40 might actually be the new timeless.

Sure, she makes fun of the fact that her skin doesn't have the elasticity it used to or that gravity is an unkind SOB. But with age comes wisdom. Right?

"Honey, nobody wears boob tape before 10 a.m." says her friend Ellie (Christa Miller), when confronted by Jules in a low-cut shimmering silver dress from Black Halo. It seemed Jules felt the need to wear it when taking out her garbage in front of her hunky neighbor to prove a point: She's still got it.

Which brings us to a debilitating observation: Just because you have wisdom doesn't mean you use good judgment. All we remember about that dress was that it was silver; the boob tape and athletic thighs were winning the fight for attention.

"I shortened that dress 10 inches," costume designer Kim Tillman ("Dirt," "Wild Things," "Fools Rush In") says, laughing. "It had to be ridiculous. That is where comedy comes into play. Of course, it still looked amazing on her."

Of course it did. Everything does. She's genetically superior to 99 percent of the cougar population.

"Jules is a good Southern girl who has been working hard her entire adult life," Tillman says. "Now she finds herself divorced and having to navigate the waters of single life."

We guess she'll be OK. But part of what makes Jules more interesting than your run-of-the-mill character is she doesn't live in New York or L.A. or some fictional city in Middle America. She lives on the west coast of Florida - and the Sunshine State definitely has a different vibe sartorially from the big city. Add to that that Jules is a real estate agent, and all bets are off.

"They do kinda have their own look," Tillman says. "They do dresses and suits and lots of jewelry."

And because of the magic of television, cost isn't much of an issue. For Jules' work wardrobe, the pilot included gorgeous shift dresses from Versace and Diane von Furstenberg.

"She is very professional and polished at work," Tillman says. "We use bold, clear patterns - never anything blurry like watercolors ... . My favorite was the orange and white Versace dress. It was perfect; it was fitted, but she could move in it - cotton with a little stretch. It was just perfectly cut."

Tillman continues, "We've had so many people calling about things on the show, we've added 'Jules' Closet,' a feature on the show's Web site, which will be updated each week so people can find what she's wearing."

So if you want to know about the sunglasses from Lilly Pulitzer or Oliver Peoples, or the shoes from Moschino and Barney's Co-Op, or even the James Perse T-shirts, they're all just a click away.

Too bad old people aren't good with technology.
