tvfashwn29.jpgHilda Suarez is hot and isn't afraid to flaunt it. Sure, those who favor crew necks and pearls may find her plunging necklines and flashy jewelry trashy, but Ana Ortiz knows how to shake those Hildy hips on ABC's Ugly Betty, airing Fridays.

To carry off this look, a woman has to be tough enough to stare down a thug, sexy enough to wear second-skin clothing without looking like a sausage, and fearless. Hilda's clothes are not for the timid.

"Hilda is definitely on her own fashion journey," Ortiz says. "She is part Queens, but a little more wicked than that. She has a little edge to it. Hilda likes a lot of color and a lot of prints."

A native New Yorker, Ortiz puts on the thick accent as she talks about her cousins who love her character's clothes. "They are like, 'Oh my God! Those pants are so gorgeous they should let you keep them.'

"She defies the whole Coco Chanel rule of take off the last accessory before you leave," Ortiz says. "She puts on one more accessory. She is the anti-Coco."

Paolo Nieddu, an assistant costume designer, describes her as, "cha-cha but she's kind of a good girl. She's not the girl next door but still kind of is. It's a more, more, more kind of look."

The costume staff shops for Hilda at Marciano, the upscale division of Guess. "We could be at Saks for Wilhelmina, and some designers that look so cheap, we'll get her those things at Saks," Nieddu says. They also shop at Century 21 and along Steinway Street in Queens, "where real Hildys shop," he says.

For dresses, she wears Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, BCBG, and Bebe.

Nieddu describes the look as "that J.Lo, Latin Bronx, '70s look - fur collars, wrap sweater, flare jeans."

Blouses are from M Missoni, Arden B and DKNY. Her pants are black leggings or jeans from Marciano, Bebe, and Citizens of Humanity.

Hilda is not your sensible flats kind of woman. She loves her heels, and they range from high-end Giuseppe Zanotti to Aldo shoes.

She wears a Michael by Michael Kors leather jacket and a Baby Phat coat.

For her jewelry, "we go in a store, and we grab the biggest earrings that we can get," Nieddu says. "We also get them on the street in Soho and from some of those stores on Steinway."

While some of the characters on Ugly Betty would be more difficult to imitate - one would need to be very rich and very thin to dress like Wilhelmina - strutting your stuff like Hilda isn't too tough.

"That's easy," Nieddu says. Hilda wannabes just need "an asymmetrical top, jeans and boots."
