Rachel Zoe from 'The Rachel Zoe Project'
Rachel Zoe takes lovely actresses and makes them Hollywood glamorous for the red carpet, as fans of Bravo's The Rachel Zoe Project, airing Mondays, know. She ensures that as actresses promote their work they wear fabulous outfits.
Yet left to her own devices, the ultrapetite (size 0) stylist has a completely different look from her clients.
"I have always, always -- for as long as I have loved fashion -- have been extremely, subconsciously influenced by the fashion of the '60s and '70s," Zoe says. "The glamorous women of Studio 54, and Peggy Lipton. The music of that time period, the architecture, and for me, I could pretty much stick with that glam bohemian thing. I live in drapey layers and caftans and big jewelry and wavy, messy hair."
Like many of us, Zoe falls into wearing what she calls a uniform. Hers are wide-legged jeans or bell-bottoms with a vintage Chanel jacket. "Ninety-nine percent of what I wear is vintage," she says. "I wear Current/Elliot jeans, 7 for All Mankind and J Brand, sometimes vintage Levis."
Though not a recreational shopper, Zoe tends to indulge when traveling for work, especially when she hits the Paris fashion shows.
"That's my splurge trip," she says. "I act like an heiress to God knows what, then spend the rest of the time going, 'I can't believe I did that!' When you are in Paris, you lose your mind for a minute and say, 'I'll deal with it later.' I go to vintage markets and vintage stores. I try to collect designer vintage and build my collection."
In the states, she tends toward vintage stores such as Resurrection, New York Vintage and What Goes Around Comes Around.
For new clothes, she hits Curve and Kirna Zabete.
As far as tops go, Zoe says, "I kind of wanted the entire fall collection of Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton."
When not in jeans, Zoe loves her harem pants by Proenza Schouler.
She wears mostly vintage dresses, favoring Yves Saint Laurent, Missoni and Halston.
Like many women who adore the first female super designer, Coco Chanel, Zoe loves the line and wears a lot of Chanel.
Her shoes are high-end, as one would expect, and she wears Vuitton, Louboutin, Brian Atwood, Giuseppe Zanotti, Azzedine Alaia and Lanvin.
When even the most style-conscious were discovering lip gloss, Zoe, at 11, was already collecting jewelry.
"I have bags of jewelry," she says. "I have a ton of vintage costume, new costume, a lot of Chanel, YSL, Valentino, Givenchy, Pierre Cardin and Geoffrey Beene.
With all of this, Zoe admits her closets are stuffed, though organized. And, like most husbands, hers, Rodger, does not get much storage space.
