Christine Campbell from 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'
One of the many lovable aspects of Julia
Louis-Dreyfus' portrayal of a scattered single mom on CBS' The New Adventures
of Old Christine is that she dresses like a working single mom.
In between trying to juggle a love life, a son, an ex-husband and his new Christine, Louis-Dreyfus' character works in clothes most working moms do -- trousers and wrap dresses.
Admittedly, she wears designer versions of what budget-conscious single moms do, and she looks better than most working moms.
It's fun to dress her, says costumer Lori Eskowitz-Carter, because "she has a fantastic body. She really embraces (fashion) and her character and what's appropriate."
"I feel like it's very clean lines and a very sophisticated color palette," Eskowitz-Carter says. "She doesn't wear tons of bright, bright colors or a ton of patterns. Mostly solid tones and rich, deep colors. I feel her look, for the most part, is very, very controlled. Not a lot of variance in the style of her character."
Louis-Dreyfus says, "Because I am 5-3, we start putting a lot of prints on me, and I get swallowed up. We often use jewelry to funk things up. Even the simplest of T-shirts with the right bangles and neck stuff can really transform an outfit."
Christine wears an eclectic range of jewelry, though the costumer picks a number of pieces from Irene Neuwirth's collection.
"The bulk of her clothing is Michael Kors' fancier line," Eskowitz-Carter says. She also wears Diane von Furstenberg and Nanette Lepore.
"It's very flattering on Julia because the stuff isn't very structured, so it fits her body well," the costumer says.
Christine wears plenty of Theory slacks. Like most working moms, she pulls on a pair of jeans in the morning, often J Brand and Citizens of Humanity Jeans. Because Luis-Dreyfus is petite, she wears very high platform heels.
"Clark (Gregg, who plays ex-husband Richard) is on the tall side," Eskowitz-Carter explains. "And Hamish (Linklater, who plays her brother) is tall. The higher the heels, the better your legs look; the better your butt looks."
Her shoes are from Neiman Marcus or Saks, tending toward Miu Miu, Prada and Gucci. Though Christine is polished on the outside, she showed what's underneath in the hilarious episode, One and a Half Men, in which her gynecologist, played by former "Seinfeld" co-star Jason Alexander, explains she's peri-menopausal. In that episode, a hot flash prompts her to shed her shirt, revealing a hideous bra that she found at the gym.
"I was grateful I wasn't in a bra and granny panties," Louis-Dreyfus says. "I was scared. It is weird to -- oy! -- to be partially naked on camera. You get used to it after a few minutes, so I don't even know what that means. That's trouble, that's what that means."
