Amy Juergens from 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager'
Gone are the maternity tops
decorated with ducks and teddy bears, and pregnant women rejoice!Instead, maternity fashion can be chic. But how to dress a pregnant 15-year-old, whose prepregnancy style was bohemian wallflower?
That challenge is met weekly on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, airing Mondays on ABC Family. Amy
Juergens (Shailene Woodley) successfully hid her pregnancy for a while. When
she started to show, the freshman needed to change her look.
"Kind of eclectic bohemian is where we started," costumer Sherry Thompson says. "And, Shailene herself is really interested in fashion, and into the '80s, and she has a unique style. She will try anything."
Woodley's favorite part of the character's look is "how eclectic she is," she says.
In the season opener in January, Amy was married in a long, tan dress.
"I don't think Amy would buy a dress," Woodley says. "Maybe she would have it in her closet, and knowing Amy, she would pair a bunch of things together and make an ensemble. I like how her wardrobe falls together with tons and tons of accessories and random layers."
"They are not a poor family," Woodley says of the Juergens. "But they are not rich, and since they're getting divorced, there's not a lot to spare. I think Amy would wear normal clothes, like Free People, and still look cute."
Taking a cue from Woodley, who trolls for bargains at Free People's Web site, Thompson says, "I shop a lot at Urban Outfitters. They have an eclectic range. As her belly started to grow, I put a shirt over it or button a sweater over it. She wears a lot of leggings and tunic shapes."
Thompson also finds outfits at Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Sears and JC Penney.
"I shop everywhere," Thompson says. "Our budget is very restricted, so it helps to shop at those stores. I use a lot of color. She loves yellow and has a bright yellow sweater we have used a couple of times."
Amy favors two teen standards: Converse and boots, which Thompson buys at Aldo.
Of course Woodley has a figure most pregnant women don't -- she is 5 feet 7 and a size 0.
"My hips are staring to grow," Woodley says. "I'm between a 0 and 1. One day my hips will grow, and one day my butt will grow bigger. Everyone in my family is stick-thin and supertall."
In the meantime, Thompson will continue shopping for her at Bloomingdale's and Forever 21.
And as Amy changes, Thompson envisions changes in her wardrobe.
"We are going to be able to give a less cluttered look to her because the belly doesn't need to be hidden anymore," Thompson says. "Having the baby will bring her look to a more mature level and simplify it a little bit."

Oh i love that they put Shalienne in clothes from normal places like Forever 21 and JC Penny and dont put her in all designer clothes.. It would be unnecessary and unrealistic if they did!
I love Amy's clothes, she always looks cute and trendy but they dont try to dress her too old for a high schooler..
This show is so awesome, they really put so much effort into making everything realistic, right down to the clothes Amy wears!
