Dr. Derek Shepherd from 'Grey's Anatomy'
We're about to button up 2008 and move on to greener pastures (and pantsuits), so who better to personify this year than a doctor who has caused more than a few hearts to experience palpitations? We're talking, of course, about Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka McDreamy of Grey's Anatomy, airing Thursdays on ABC.
He's got a style that seems to transcend all demographics: He's an adult who dresses young, he's got a few bucks but doesn't flaunt it, he can go from day to night with little to no effort, and he makes women 18-69 require oxygen.
Like most men of the 21st century, Derek's wardrobe is grounded by denim. It's from there that he moves on to a range of other pieces that specifically define him -- sweaters, T-shirts, jerseys, sport coats, dress shirts, etc. -- as McDreamy.
Though there's been a massive swelling in the ranks of premium denim, a staple of Dr. Shepherd's closet is the tried and true Levi's original straight-cut 501 jeans with button fly. Even the trendiest of stylists recognize the quality of this classic. Of course, no one just wears one pair of jeans anymore, and so he also has a great pair of John Varvatos five-pocket authentic-fit jeans in a dark wash with slight whiskering.
In fact, the good doctor is a big fan of Varvatos. In recent episodes he was spotted in a beautiful black three-button cotton twill blazer with notched lapels as well as a great long-sleeved hoodie in charcoal heather with a fine waffle texture, kangaroo pockets and ribbed placket, cuffs and hem from John Varvatos Star USA. He's even got several of the designer's button-down slit fit dress shirts and sports a wool overcoat and a pair of Varvatos leather combat boots! That's commitment.
But, for some reason, when we think McDreamy, we think of a V-neck sweater. And he has a closet full of terrific basics such as the Barenti V-neck sweater in black from Boss in merino wool. It works perfectly over a muted dress shirt or a long-sleeved crew-neck shirt from James Perse. Of course, the reason we think he tends to go for sweaters and T-shirts is because of their ease of removal. You never know when Meredith -- or whoever -- might show up. And in those situations, time is of the essence.
And it's with that in mind we suspect he's chosen Zegna's black wool polo sweater, Armani's tight-fitting shoulder rib V-neck in black and Polo Ralph Lauren's lamb's-wool half-zip pullover. Our guess is that the ladies think they look as good on as they do in a pile on the floor at the end of the bed. And isn't it his bedside manner that has you tuning in week after week? Yeah, well, whatever ails you, we think you're cured.
