Meredith Grey from 'Grey's Anatomy'

There's something addictive about Grey's Anatomy, airing Thursdays on ABC. More precisely, there's something addictive about the anatomy of Meredith Grey.

Played by the lovely Ellen Pompeo, the poor man's Diane Lane, Meredith is an icon for American women. Not just because her life seems to follow a path familiar to so many (on-again/off-again boyfriend bosses, anyone?), but because she is an expert at making simple looks work in a powerful fashion.

Think about her for just a second. Put her in your mind's eye. What do you come up with? Most will envision Meredith in a simple top and jeans. Maybe a long-sleeved T-shirt or print mesh top over a pair of straight-leg jeans, whether she's lounging at home waiting for yet another houseguest or heading to work. Among the many choices in her closet is a beautiful orange cashmere V-neck sweater from J. Crew with rib trim at the neck, cuffs and hem. We're big fans of J. Crew, so we also suggest its stunningly luxurious cashmere short-sleeved T-shirt.

Other shirts from Meredith's collection include a 100-percent sheer rib cotton 3/4-sleeve V-neck shirt with elongated body in sea foam (she also has another in eggplant) from American Apparel; a Shine 3/4-length sleeve mid V-neck in cotton and nylon in wind (that's a color) from Michael Stars; Three Dots scoop cotton 3/4-length sleeve T-shirt in gray heather; and Splendid's 1x1 crew neck long-sleeved T-shirt in deep olive.

While none of the above tops are dramatic, she does go slightly more stylish with Autumn Cashmere's 3/4-length sleeve deep V-neck tunic in red. She pairs that with a beautiful pair of Chrissie dark denim jeans from Marc Jacobs or J Brand's low-rise cigarette-leg corduroy jeans.

Of course, Seattle has some moderately inclement weather, so outerwear is important. And our favorite heavy-weight coat of hers is a black wool-blend Emma coat from Marc New York. This belted double-breasted midlength coat features a wide shawl collar with princess seams and flap pockets with button tabs at the cuffs.

And if you haven't already figured out that Meredith prefers the basics over flash, her choice in footwear should help drive that point home. The girl has more pairs of Converse All-Stars than Wilt Chamberlain ever owned. She even has multiple pairs of Uggs, including the Coquette slippers and Sheila slip-on boots.

Then again, sometimes the weather requires more than a canvas sneaker, and here she goes a little militant on us with Timberland's 14-inch lace-up boots, which you can customize to your tastes. She has a few of them, but the original in wheat nubuck are still our favorites. They're so nice even McDreamy tells her to leave them on.
