David Letterman's former assistant Stephanie Birkitt has been identified as one of the women involved in the David Letterman extortion plot, Huffington Post says.
Birkitt lived with alleged blackmailer Robert "Joe" Halderman, who claimed he "was in possession of Birkitt's diary, correspondence and photos -- which he says incriminated Letterman."
Sources tell RadarOnline.com that Birkitt is reportedly "mortified Halderman is using her fling with Letterman to blackmail her boss."
Birkitt, a 1997 graduate of Wake Forest University, interned in the writers' department at the "Late Show" in 1996.
She also worked at "48 Hours" -- where Halderman worked as a producer before Birkitt applied to be Letterman's assistant.
And the rest is TV sex scandal history.
Sleeping with your assistant, Dave? Tres Clintonesque. Let's hope there wasn't a cigar involved.

"Happy Campers" are "quid pro quo" sexual bullies without a social conscience. Sex is a bonding event and it impacts and biases every event in the office and impacts others careers - the Milgrim effect. It also creates a hostile workplace even though others may not be interested in the affair. Cover ups falsely accuse vulnerable employees with inappropriate behaviors to cover up the affair impact their careers and hide it from other workers. If the extortionist felt harmed he needed to write a book rather than extort as a criminal and make his money that way. Happy campers are "sexual bully extortionists" without a conscience. Perhaps our "Lawyers, Judges and Wall street" are criminals when it is "group think" trendy to use one form extortion but not another.

It is now time for David Letterman to "retire". He is no longer funny and his image & reputation is in shambles. He made jokes about Sarah Palin's daughter. If you think the unemployment rate of 17 million is high, wait until you see what happens when everybody who has sexual contact with employees and co-workers gets fired!!! Come on - get real. The man had an affair, he confessed to it and if his wife can accept that, why should anybody else care?
Dave is awesome and I loved the skits with Stephanie! Too bad that jackass boyfriend of hers is ruining her career cause it will do her more harm than letterman!! And it shouldn't hurt anyone! He wasn't married - everyone knows he was the bachelor - and if folks don't think peeps are sleeping with each other in the work place then they need to take their head out from under their pillow!
If Letterman knows Birkitt talks about her ex's (so much so that he's mocking them in skits with her in them) he sure as hell shouldn't be surprised that this happened. I used to think Dave was smart....
Now I just think he's an immoral and creepy old man.
