Did you miss the show? Watch Miley's controversial dance here! "You know what? I just think that Miley loves entertaining people," her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, tells Access Hollywood, according to Us Weekly.
"She loves singing [and] songwriting," he says of her swirling around a pole atop an ice cream pushcart while she sang "Party in the USA."
"I always tell her to love what you're doing and stay focused for the love of the art and not worry so much about opinion," Billy Ray Cyrus says, adding, "I give my kids a lot of freedom to make the art they want to make and make it in their own voice. I think it's important."
Yeah, let's let a 16-year-old make her own mistakes, like taking risqué photos herself that circulate on the Web, posing topless in Vanity Fair (from the back) and hanging like a pole-dancer at the Teen Choice Awards.
It's all part of growing up. Gotta let the young'uns learn the hard way, right?

i really like miley and i really dont see why everybody's making so much drama about this im 17 and most of teenagers dream with getting up in a stage and be sexy... She didn't take her clothes off or did something vulgar and i think Billy is great Miley is taking her own decisions and that is good let her be.

I am sorry, but WHAT pole dancing? She held onto the top of an ice cream truck pole as she sang a song. For about 30 seconds. Please. People need a hobby. Another one.
So let me get this straight, LA Times -- You want to know whether or not her dance was inappropriate, so to get feedback you SHOW people the dance you suspect may be inappropriate? LOL! Pretty hypocritical on your part.
Elizabeth, have you seen Miley's performance?? People are writing about this as though she was flipping herself upside down on that pole or something. All she does is stand next to it. She would make a horrible stripper based on that performance and I think she is taking an inordinate amount of heat for this.
Billy is just trying to be a "cool" dad. Oh boy........
Actually, yes. She is old enough to make her own responsible desicions, she isn't actually a pole dancer, she never actually danced on the pole, she isn't actually a stripper. A parent's job is to guide, not to force, and forceful parents in that industry become stage parents and lead to train wrecks like Lindsay Lohan. She's a smart girl, she can make her own decisions, and will learn from the consequences.

At least her parents are there supporting her. She did a great performance.
