Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Richard Dreyfuss on hitting bottom
Christopher Kennedy Lawford's first book was about his own personal recovery from alcohol and heroin.
His new book, "Moments of Clarity: Voices From the Front Lines of Addiction," contains 42 essays by ordinary people and celebs including Jamie Lee Curtis, Martin Sheen, Susan Cheever, Alec Baldwin and Judy Collins, each describing the event that finally made them ask for help with their addictions.
For instance, Richard Dreyfuss' moment of clarity was when he realized that a little girl who appeared in a vision at a drug-fueled orgy was his unborn daughter. One of Jamie Lee Curtis' moments of clarity came when her Brazilian shaman brought up her pill-popping
Lawford talked to USA Today about how he got people to open up about hitting bottom and their recovery.
Jamie Lee Curtis:
"She had wished for sobriety and kept it a secret. She knew she was close to dying from Vicodin and alcohol. I know Jamie. We grew up together. Our parents were best friends. We'd go ice skating together as kids."
Martin Sheen:
"I sent him a copy of my first book and asked him if I could talk to him about this book. He called me up and said, 'Come to my house.' I went to his house out in Malibu and he said, 'I'm going to tell you a story about my moment of clarity that I would never tell you if I hadn't read your book.' "
That's enough to make me want to read it. How about you?
