Brazilian model Mariani Bridi dies of infection after hands, feet amputated
This is just horrible.
A Brazilian model whose feet and hands were amputated as a result of a severe and drug-resistant infection has died today, the Associated Press reports via the L.A. Times.
Mariana Bridi, 20,
who according to Gawker came close twice to representing Brazil in the Miss World competition, died of complications related to a rare form of septicemia caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The Espirito Santo State Health Secretariat released a statement noting that the bacteria was known to be resistant to multiple kinds of antibiotics.
Bridi had been in the hospital since Jan. 3.
From the AP story: "Doctors originally diagnosed her with kidney stones in December, local media said. But as her condition worsened, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that spread." There is no known cause for the infection, which reduced the oxygen in her limbs, requiring her feet to be amputated last week and her hands this week.
Doctors removed part of Bridi's stomach as they tried to contain internal bleeding. At the time of her death, she was no longer breathing on her own.
So sad and so scary. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones.

That another reason to avoid Brazilian restos and the hoteliers there. Goodbye wherever you are.
NO KNOWN CAUSE FOR THE INFECTION??? I researched this bacteria online and found several known causes. More likely her death was due to incompetent third world doctors misdiagnosing and acting slowly.
Oh, shut up, Mike. BRAZIL is not third world. Bacterial infections can take over very quickly. Doctors are not fool proof...not to mention, people have died from very easily diagnosed bacterial infections in the US. Jim Henson? Hello?
I would like to say that medicine is full of miracles .this infection is very rare ,,and rarely causing sepsis with this fatal consequenses especiaaly in a young healthy individual.even private doctor of Bush can miss it !!
This is a bacteria that start in the urinary tract or some other parts in the body. In Bridi case it start in the urinart tract. This bacteria is very tough to fight off, it is resistant to many antibotic, in her case it caused septicimia, infection to her blood, which caused lack of circulation in her extremities.
@Naomi,
I'm sorry, but Brazil is a third world country still. Brazil maybe one of the BRICS and fast developing. but still accept the fact that it is still underdeveloped.
Hate to burst your bubble Naomi but Brazil is a third world country, don't be fooled by what you see on television and staying at the resorts & hotels. They are indeed beautiful but travel away from the resorts and you'll see what I am talking about.
Hid and Mike - both of you need to go back to school for a little geography class. Plenty of people in the US have died in 2008 of staph infection... Short memory, or plain stupidity? gee!
Scary indeed. None of us is guaranteed tomorrow. We each need to examine our hearts and determine if we are ready to face eternity. I pray this young lady was prepared. My heart goes out to her family and friends.
I know how it feels. I lost an arm and a leg in the stock market myself.
