'Twilight' director dumped. But NOT Robert Pattinson!
"Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke will not, we repeat, not be directing "New Moon," the next installment of the vampire lover film series.
Not that too many fans will care. Let's face it. The only thing that would upset "Twilight" fans is if Robert Pattinson were canned. Blasphemy!
And to be perfectly honest, the only reason we're writing about this is to run a photo of Pattinson with Kristen Stewart and Hardwicke.
Spotted in Nikki Finke's column column this week, "Catherine and Summit have agreed to part ways on the sequel because our visions are different," Summit Entertainment Co-Chairman/CEO Rob Friedman said. A studio news statement said: "Summit's targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, 'New Moon,' does not work with Ms. Hardwicke's required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen."
This breaking news is gonna mean that Hardwicke will going to have to discuss her being unceremoniously dumped -- and the real reasons why -- on the just-started European press tour.
Will Summit choose a male director for more movie-going teenage boy appeal? And what will this mean to "Twilight" fans?
The answers are: Who knows and not much. Look, the "Harry Potter" films had a few directors, and there's no question that the movies got better with each new directors' input.
So relax.
Who would you like to see direct "New Moon" and why?

I'd like to see Sofia Coppola or Juno director Jason Reitman. It doesn't have to be a woman, imho. :)
The Harry Potter movies also got progressively bigger budgets. Summit is insistant that they can do New Moon and Eclipse for cheap and keep the fans happy. If they go hokey, I will not be spending my money.
Sadly this is true. They could change EVERYONE but Pattinson, and we'd be good. :o) People would riot if that happened. lol
Let Paul Morrison the director of Pattinson's Little Ashes film take over. He did an incredible job on that low budget film. Pattinson is awesome in that film as is Javier Beltran. Shows what you can get from a small budget if you have a good director and excellent script. I'd use the wonderful cinematographer on Little Ashes too. A wonderful film.
I only watch this franchise to see Pattinson. I could lick the screen when he's on.
Yes, the great Elliot Davis deserves A LOT of credit. I have no doubt the editor might as well. But only Catherine Hardwicke could have gotten those performances from those actors -- it's like My So-Called Life, with Godfather ambitions. This is a real shame. Oh well, here's hoping Kathryn Bigelow or Neil Jordan or Patrice Chereau (omg!) will be hired to direct.
I would LOVE to see Joss Whedon take a stab at it!
sadly, i was kind of hoping this would happen. hopefully with a new director, new moon will come minus the cheesy-ness that twilight had too much of. sorry c. harwick, but i think the right choice was made!
I think the script writer Melissa Rosenberg needs sacking too. she did a terrible job.
Kristen Stewart is hardly a role model for young girls and should be ditched as well. Her monotone emotionless performance was very poor.
Pattinson had to do most of the pr for this film. He did a great job.
Pretty sexist article (assuming this feminine franchise 'needs' a female director), but its par for the course.
Good thing she's going - the direction was AWFUL and she's clearly not qualified to direct action sequences...but then, the audience for this wouldn't care. They just want eye-candy, and let's be honest - the source material isn't anything special. Let them have their day and their fun... Harry Potter this isn't, or never was (and will never be).
