Denis Leary says 'Your kids aren't autistic. They're stupid or lazy.'

Denisleary Some of "Rescue Me" star Denis Leary's rants in his new book, "Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid," are not going to endear the actor to parents of autistic children or the Autism Society of America.

Leary writes: "There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don't give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you -- yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."

The Autism Society has responded with: "For Mr. Leary to suggest that families or doctors conspire to falsely diagnose autism is ridiculous. . . . [His] remarks reflect the same misconceptions of autism being caused by bad or unemotional parenting that were held over 50 years ago."

In Vanity Fair, Leary mentions the autism chapter as his "favorite" and hopes that autism activist Jenny McCarthy will picket his book tour.

"That would be really good for me," Leary told VF interviewer George Wayne. "It will help sell more books."

What do you think about Leary's autism statements? Is he trying to be funny? Did it work? Or should he be taken out and shot?

Time to complain to FX and to the sponsors of Rescue Me. Damn the man, doesn't he realized he narrowly dodged the Developmental Disability bullet when his son was so premature?

I think Dennis Leary is a piece of crap. And if Jenny McCarthy pickets his book tour,.... I'll be right there beside her all the way!!

If Mr. Leary had ever been in the presence of an autistic child, he would CLEARLY see that it has nothing to do with laziness or stupidity. Often these children are smart and overactive. They just have no skills for channelling and focussing that intelligence or energy into so called "normal" social behaviors. Trying to stir up controversy to sell a book is pretty sad. Why don't you just write a better book that people will actually want to read? Or are you too stupid and lazy for that?

I am offended by Mr. Leary's remarks. My daughter has a form of Autism and she is probably 100 times smarter than he is! She has Asperger's Syndrome. It is in the Autistic Spectrum. She is a very intelligent child! Nevertheless, he needs to do more research before writing books about things he knows nothing about! Autistic children are not STUPID!

Picking on disabled kids is probably not a good sign for a comic's career trajectory.

I'm no fan of Jenny McCarthy either, but Leary should try to understand that she in no represents the majority of parents of autistic children.

I have a 6-year-old son whom i love him very much. He is only partially verbal, is not potty-trained, does not have friends to speak of and has hours of therapy every week to try and learn the basic skills that come naturally to other kids.

He has autism. Not some fake, ginned-up syndrome but an actual, profound developmental disability.

Life is hard enough for him as it is, without people like Leary dumping on him to sell a few more books. My son is not a moron or lazy or stupid; he's a great kid with a lot of challenges, and is someone who deserves, at the very least, to be treated like a human being. Not as a pawn in some fatuous actor's soulless and cynical publicity campaign.

Mr. Leary clearly believes because he has a small bit of celebrity, people actually care what he thinks! Perhaps he should stick to D List acting and shut up about my child's disability! God forbid his grandchildren be afflicted with Autism!!!

he is a genius

Ironically, the Worcester, Massachusetts fire department ... IAFF local 1009... Denis Leary's hometown and the site of one of the worst warehouse fires in US history where sadly Denis Leary's cousin died...has raised close to $2000 for the Elias Tembenis Walk for Autism/ National autism Association's Helping Hands program to give grants to families with Autism. Let's not forget the wonderful work THEY have done:

One of the firefighter's nephews, Robert Williams is one of the 2 walkers doing the cross country journey.

This coming from a man wearing a dress holding high heels?Your incompetent, immature,un educated self, needs to do a little research.Do you have kids? If so I will PROUDLY display on my bumber,"MY AUSTIC KID KICKED YOUR KIDS ***"

My daughter can kick other kids' ***** academically - she read her first word at 13 months and it was the word "almanac!" She knew every state capitol by 4 years old - its social communication that she has a problem with, and other pica behaviors - obviously science is not one of Leary's strong suits - geneticists have found differences in as many as 16 chromosomes, and the brain is structurally different - what an ***!
