DiablocodySo you think "Juno" bites and that writer Diablo Cody is overrated, pretentiously alternative and seriously full of herself?

Well, you are not alone. But her name is engraved on an Oscar. And yours isn't. So there!

That's what Diablo (not her real name and wanna make something of it?) Cody writes on her MySpace blog.

To save you from having to actually click here to read Diablo Cody's rant, here are some of the many high points:

-- I am not Charlie Kaufman or Sofia Coppola (much as I supplicate at their Cannes-weary feet.) I'm not Paul Thomas Anderson. I'm not even Paul W.S. Anderson. I am middle-class trash from the Midwest. I'm a competent nonfiction writer, an admittedly green screenwriter, and a product of Hollywood, USA.

-- I may have won 19 awards that you don't feel I earned, but it's neither original nor relevant to slag on Juno. Really. And you're not some bold, singular voice of dissent, You are exactly like everyone else in your zeitgeisty-demo-lifestyle pod. You are even like me. (I, too, loved Arrested Development! Aren't we a pretty pair of cultural mavericks?

-- I know my name is fake and that it annoys you. What, do you hate Queen Latifah and Rip Torn, too? Writers and entertainers have been using pseudonyms for years. Chances are, you're spewing bile under an assumed screen name yourself. ... I like my fake name. It's engraved on an Oscar. Yours isn't.

I hate to admit this, but the girl's got a good point. In fact, a few of them.

What do you think? Do you like Diablo Cody or loathe her? And why?

Pseudonyms? Yes, everyone has one, but Miss Cody picked hers from the Spanish word for "devil," which is kinda funny in a 5th grade Spanish class sort of way and kinda freaky in a Charles Manson sort of way. In her defense, with its tween "witticisms" and puns, her writing is a lot closer to 5th grade than Charles Manson, yet I would still hide the knives if Miss Cody were to pay a visit.

Sorry, Devil Girl, your 15 minutes are up!

Lay off her...

America loves to find a new hot thing, build them up, make them popular, then destroy them...she is talented and witty and she has an Oscar. There are plenty more UNDESERVING Oscar winners out there.

You know, I would really love to like Miss Cody, and one should wait for an assessment of her skill until her 2nd and 3rd movies come out. Having said that, however, JUNO was nothing more than an After School Special with Twitter dialogue. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't terribly good either. It was servicable. As for her "defense" that she has got an Academy Award, I have two words for her: Ernest Lehman. Winning that statuette is not, nor has it ever been a measure of your quality as a writer. More often than not these days they are given out to the "It" person of the day. If your movies are still remembered fondly decades down the line, then we can talk.

It's unfortunate that "the haters" bothered Diablo enough to warrant a comment.

On one hand, I think it's gutsy of her to respond. I think most public figures would LOVE to respond but are afraid to because of the possible response (more flaming, etc).

On the other hand, you can see her struggle between insecurity (I'm not Kaufman, Coppola) and arrogance (I've won 19 awards, I have an Oscar). That struggle is the way to raging megalomania.

I hope she can avoid the pull to become a raging egomaniac and keep herself grounded because she really is incredibly talented!

Juno was a clever, feel-good, fairytale of a movie that came out at just the right time and I thank Diablo for writing it.

Given how hard it is to even write a script, let alone one that clearly resonates with millions of people, I think no matter what she does for the rest of her life Diablo made an amazing contribution to the wonderful world of filmmaking and storytelling!

if someone doesn't like your work, its just lame to respond with "you're jealous of how accomplished i am." so how do you explain the other highly popular films that don't have a back-lash

I think what happened with Diablo Cody is that she annoyed everyone with the whole "I used to be a stripper" thing. I think if she had just appeared and showed, not told (her hipness, her stripperness, whatever) then maybe we wouldn't all think she was a wanker. I live in the City, and where I live, everyone looks and talks like her. So what? She wrote a movie that was different and timely--I respect she had the fortitude and the diligence. Is she mindblowingly talented? I don't know. Does her blog make her sound like a moron? Yes.

Juno is an anti-choice pre-Palinish tale. I've had enough of her and her pretensions all over the net and airwaves.

Plus the way she allegedly got famous (which I have my doubts about) is disgusting.

Aren't her 15 mins up yet?

To all the haters I can't say that I don't understand what you're saying and why you believe it, but I can say this - where's your screenplay [OscarĀ®-winning or otherwise]?

Love her! She is talented, like many many others, and she was in the right place at the right time after working hard. Sometimes fame & work arrive later, sometimes earlier. When will everyone realize that there is room at the top? I'm super proud of Diablo - her work may not speak to everyone, but it speaks to many and for those "many" - she is a blessing. Everyone is an audience for somebody. I'm happy to be a part of hers.
