Is it a bird or a plane? Sarah Jessica Parker won't save the Costume Gala?

Sarah_jessica_parker_sex_and_the_ci Never fear, fashionistas!

Tonight's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala, co-chaired by George Clooney, (sure to bring up the fact that his Batman suit had nipples!)  Anna Wintour, Julia Roberts and Giorgo Armani,  has a "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" theme.

And from FWD, here are damsels and dudes who will save the day at the chicer-than-chic bash:

Naomi Watts will wear Thierry Mugler (look out for those super-sharp '80s shoulders) in large part because the actress has recently been hired as the designer's new Angel icon.

Original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter will do a fly-by. Rumor is she plans to wear those original metal cuffs from the TV show. I can hardly wait to see this super-disaster.

A presumably no longer grieving Cameron Diaz will be promoting Dior Beaute, which she wore (on her face) at the Oscars this year. "Sex and the City: the Movie" star Kristin Davis will be "Project Runway" star Michael Kor's date. Actor-model Jason Lewis will do his thing for Dolce & Gabbana. Maggie Gyllanhaal, the new girl on the "Batman" block, will be Peter Som's date. Chanel has Euro-bragging rights for Thandie Newton and Audrey Tautou, who has replaced Nicole Kidman (and it's about time!) as the face of Chanel No. 5.

But here's the surprise non-guest of the night: Sarah Jessica Parker, who is busy, her pub sez.

Busy? Carrie Bradshaw is BUSY on New York's biggest fashion night of the year?

Is this yet another SATC slap in the face to the Big Apple? As if having the world premiere in London, followed by Berlin, before New York, isn't painful enough?

If you just cannot wait until tomorrow for all the scoop on this special style night, tune into E! on May 8 at 8 p.m. for "The E! Met Special," featuring red carpet interviews by Giuliana Rancic with arriving celebrities and their designer dates.

The burning question is will E! dare to do a Fashion Police Best and Worst?  Be careful who you're calling fugly, E! babes

Trust me, these international designers are vicious. They could cut you a brand new inseam before you can say, "Christian Louboutin!"

Why, you may never be invited to cocktails before their runway show again! Just ask New York Times style scribe Cathy Horyn, who has personally felt the unbridled wrath of the night's co-chair Armani.
