Misfits of SciTunes: Reed Richards

By Ryan McGee

June 17, 11:52 AM

Mrfantastic_240 I'd like to thank the Misfits of Sci-Fi for this opportunity to talk directly with you today. I must admit, with no trace of irony, that it was I that first conceived of the Internet, no matter what Leonard Kleinrock, Tim Berners-Lee, or Al Gore might want to tell you. Unfortunately, I never obtained the proper patents to truly claim credit in a legal sense. The takeaway lesson? Always put your paperwork in a fireproof safe when The Human Torch is in a bad mood.

In any case, I'm not here to talk about The Fantastic Four, or any of my various scientific achievements, or all those times Sue, Johnny, Ben, and I saved the world and/or universe. That's all well and good, but what I want to talk about today is something much more vital: my favorite songs. No one ever asks me about my favorite tunes! It's always "build an antimatter gun" this or "seal up the portal to the Negative Zone" that. No one ever wants to know what jams I rock out to while doing those things! So when the Misfits came calling, I dropped my latest top secret project here in the Baxter Building and got right to work.

After all, if Carlos Mencia can get a freakin' Celebrity Playlist on iTunes, so can Reed Richards!

The Scientist, Coldplay. It used to be "The Boxer," until the day Ben asked me who I was trying to fool. Good ol' Ben, he knows how to hurt a guy without even landing a punch.

Space Oddity, David Bowie. So, true story: I'm in London, having a pint, and this cat comes up to me. Says he's a musician, he's a fan of the Fantastic Four, and we get to chatting. I tell him that due to the nature of our origin, I came THIS close to naming the group "Space Oddity," only to find out through a focus group that it didn't play very well. Well, one year later, I'm cruising around, and what comes on the radio? And do you think I ever saw a royalty check? Course not.

Bend Me, Shape Me, The American Breed. I must admit, I was a bigger fan of the song until I saw The American Breed in action. The Fantastic Four they are not. The Fantastically Awkward Four? More apt, really.

She Blinded Me With Science, Thomas Dolby. Always reminds me of the first time I met Sue.

Invisible Touch, Genesis. For the love of my life. Through the good times, through the bad times, through all those times she scares the bejesus out of me after using her powers to sneak up while I'm trying to calibrate the Fantasticar.

Intergalactic, Beastie Boys. I tend to throw this one on if I'm feeling nostalgic for all of our encounters with Galactus. So, yea, not played too often, actually.

Eternal Flame, The Bangles. Keep crackin' wise, Johnny. I'm smiling silently, listening to this song on my headphones, while you keep running your mouth. Do you feel the same, or am I only dreaming?

Orange Crush, R.E.M. For my best friend Ben. Someday I'll find a cure for your condition, old buddy. Just as soon as I figure out what the heck Michael Stipe is singing during the chorus of the song. Guy buries his vocals so far down in the mix that no machine on earth can decipher his words.

Franklin's Tower, Grateful Dead. I will admit that the "Deadhead" aesthetic is fundamentally loathsome, what with its counterculture mentality, lack of work ethic, and an aversion to bathing. But I keep this song on constant play as a reminder that my son could reshape the fabric of reality itself and turn the Baxter Building into a stronghold from which he could rule despotically for centuries. Plus, nice guitar solo!

Surfin Safari, The Beach Boys. Hi ho, Silver!

Nothing But a G Thang, Dr. Dre
. Now this is the type of doctor I can support. The other one in my life? Not so much.

It's Not Easy Being Green, Kermit the Frog. Sorry about that whole Planet Hulk thing, Bruce. Our bad.

***

Once again, thanks to the Misfits for this once in a lifetime opportunity! If you know of any songs I should add to my collection, let me know below!

Reed Richards also reads Boob Tube Dude when not saving the universe.
