Kiefer Sutherland, Kit Harington in dramatic new 'Pompeii' stills
"Game of Thrones" star Kit Harington might not have his shirt off in the latest images from "Pompeii," but that doesn't make them any less epic. The man better known as Jon Snow faces off against Kiefer Sutherland's evil senator in the Paul W.S. Anderson historical epic.
USA Today has the new photos of the flick, which show Harington with his love interest, played by Emily Browning, and opposite actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. A new photo of Sutherland, meanwhile, reveals the "24" star in all his Roman glory.
"Pompeii" tells the story of a slave (Harington) who seeks to save his love (Browning) before she marries an evil senator (Sutherland). That troubled love story gets a wrinkle when Vesuvius erupts, famously covering the city of Pompeii and killing more than 16,000 residents of the area.
"It's been a long time since I did a movie this big in scope," Sutherland tells USA Today. "There are amazing computer effects, but only a third of the set was green screen. The rest was huge props, big sets, elaborate costumes, which I love."
He adds, "'Pompeii' is unbelievably relevant. I've seen more natural disasters in the last five years than I have in my entire life. [The film] isn't a history lesson, but it raises real issues that I think are worth discussing. It could happen again."
"Pompeii" is due in theaters on Feb. 21.
