Mischa Barton talks 'The OC' breakdown: 'I was never the right weight'
Mischa Barton's rise and fall from fame was well documented after "The OC" debuted. From her initial it-girl status to being killed off the show in Season 3 to her subsequent DUI arrest and involuntary 5150 hold, she continued to make headlines for bad reasons until she seemingly disappeared from the public eye. Now Barton is coming forward to talk about her downward spiral.
"It was a full-on breakdown. I was under enormous pressure," Barton tells People. "We thought, 'Work hard, play hard.'"
According to Barton, it was the intense scrutiny on her following her "The OC" success that led her to turn to drugs, alcohol and negative thoughts in her breakdown. Even after she tried to get healthy, she still heard the critics in her ear.
"It was always, 'She's too skinny, she must be sick,'" the 27-year-old says. "Then it was, 'She's too big.' I was never the right weight."
But a decade after "The OC's" initial success, Barton is planning a comeback. She's filmed a TV pilot called "The Gutsy Frog" and the supernatural thriller "I Will Follow You Into The Dark," as well as involving herself in fashion with a London boutique. According to her, these are signs of growth.
"I've learned a lot. I'm stronger now," she says.
