Kerry Washington: 'Scandal' Season 3 premiere picks up after cliffhanger
"Scandal" Season 3 finally returns tonight (Oct. 3), and Kerry Washington says fans won't have to wait long to find out what happens following Season 2's cliffhanger ending. The actress stopped by "Good Morning America" and said that while Joe Morton already knew he was portraying her dad on the show, it came as a surprise to her when she read it in the finale script.
"That is exactly where we start this season premiere, is in the car my dad and I," Washington tells Robin Roberts. "Every week it's a rollercoaster ride, and we all feel really lucky to be on this show. ... We have the most amazing writers, and they are still going for it."
Washington admits that she is still shocked by the storylines Shonda Rhimes and her writers come up with, and that's part of why she's so in love with her involvement in "Scandal." But choosing to join a TV series wasn't an easy decision for Washington.
"I had never really made this type of commitment to television, and it's hard work. ... I'm so grateful that this opportunity has come my way," Washington says, adding of her castmembers, "As much as we are frenemies on the show and rival each other for power, in real life we just adore each other."
The beginning of Season 3 will focus on the reveal that Washington's Olivia Pope is mistress to Tony Goldwyn's President Fitzgerald Grant. When Roberts uses the word "mistress" to describe Olivia, Washington stops her with a laugh. "Some might call her the love of his life -- or both," she says.
Washington, who was recently named the best dressed woman of 2013, and she appropriately wore a gorgeous Tory Burch dress to "GMA." But she explains that she wore the pink frock to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month because her mother is a breast cancer survivor.
