Fox News reports fake story about President Obama funding Muslim museum as fact
It wasn't exactly a banner weekend for the folks over at Fox News.
During a report about the World War II memorial remaining closes due to the government shutdown on Saturday's (Oct. 5) weekend edition of "Fox & Friends," weekend co-host Anna Kooiman cited information from satirical website National Report as fact. The false facts in question? That President Barack Obama "has offered to pay out of his own pocked for The Museum of Muslim Culture."
According to snopes.com, National Report used to run a disclaimer on their homepage that read, "National Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news."
Other headlines on the National Report website as of press time include "Japanese Schoolchildren's Prank Has Devastating Results, Over 850 Dead From Earthquake They Cause By All Jumping Off Chairs At Same Time" and "Jesus Christ Boycotts Hobby Lobby."
On Sunday, Kooiman issued an apology, via Twitter, for passing the satire off as fact. "Just met w producers-I made a mistake [yesterday] after receiving flawed research [about] a museum possibly closing," she writes. "My apologies. Won't happen again."
Take a look at the incident in question above and let us know what you think about Fox News' factual blunder.
