Universal Hollywood's 'Harry Potter' construction begins, Gibson Amphitheater torn down
The first step has been taken in bringing The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Universal Studios Hollywood. After housing it's last performance on September 6, the legendary Gibson Amphitheater has been leveled, to make way for J.K. Rowling's magical universe to come to life.
The demolition was documented by a Universal employee on Twitter, with a photo showing a tractor tearing apart the building. "Down it goes," he writes. "Universal/Gibson Amphitheater hits the dirt; making way for #WizardingWorldOfHarryPotter!"
The venue first opened in 1971, under the name Universal Amphitheater, as a space where a western-themed stunt show was held, while it was used for concerts at night. It later underwent renovations before reopening in 1982 as an indoor concert venue, known for its acoustics. The naming rights were purchased by the Gibson Guitar Corporation in 2005.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is scheduled to open sometime in 2015.
