Tom Hiddleston on 'Thor: The Dark World' twist, Natalie Portman's right hook
After Tom Hiddleston wowed the 2013 D23 Expo crowd on Day 1 with his hidden vocal talents, the "Thor: The Dark World" star returned Saturday (Aug. 10) for Day 2, as Disney promoted its live action slate. Hiddleston appeared on stage with his "Thor" co-stars Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins before going backstage to spill some details from the Marvel film, due Nov. 8.
"It's a lovely new twist," Hiddleston says of the sequel's storyline that sees Thor (Chris Hemsworth) recruit the banished Loki for help saving Asgard. "What happens is the Dark Elves, led by Malekith, played by Chris Eccleston, come to Asgard and they present an extraordinary threat to the state of the universe, because they're a race of people who existed long before the universe came into being.
"So before the big bang, the Dark Elves ruled the roost, and they want to return [the universe] to that state. And there's only one person who might know how to stop them, and that's public enemy No. 1, Loki. So Thor has to come down to prison, to the dungeons of Asgard where Loki's incarcerated, and ask for his help."
Hiddleston adds that the request from one brother to another is "complicated," and he also does not promise Loki will behave. "Loki's the god of mischief," he says. So I don't think good behavior is part of his remit."
As for that punch that Portman's character Jane Foster lands on Loki's chin in the recently released trailer, Hiddleston tells Zap2it. "She's good ... She's got a good right hook."
Hiddleston told Zap2it earlier that he "had a great run" playing Loki, and now says he agrees with Joss Whedon's decision not to write the character into the forthcoming "Avengers" sequel, "Age of Ultron." "I truly think that 'The Avengers' needs a new villain," Hiddleston says. "They defeated me already. I think it'll be more fun as a film to see them do something new. So, for the film, I think it's the best, ultimately. And I agree with Joss. And maybe -- who knows? -- maybe Loki turns up a long, long way in the future. Or maybe this is it. I don't know, but I've had a good time."
