'Pompeii' trailer: 'Game of Thrones' star Kit Harington goes full action hero
Jon Snow might not get that many action scenes in "Game of Thrones," but that's going to change for actor Kit Harington in Paul W.S. Anderson's upcoming movie "Pompeii." Set on the eve of the city's destruction by Mount Vesuvius, the film stars Harington as a Celtic gladiator who falls in love with a noblewoman named Cassia (Emily Browning) the night that a volcanic explosion is set to destroy Pompeii -- and who also seems to be a butt-kicking warrior, based on the movie's newly released trailer.
The first half of this teaser trailer focuses on the future the audience knows is in store for the Italian city of Pompeii. As ash floats around, the bodies of those poor Pompeians who were killed by the volcanic blast are shown in various close-ups. But, according to the trailer, Pompeii's "greatest secret still waits." Clearly this is not going to be an extremely historically accurate retelling of Pompeii's explosion.
But that's what looks like it will be half the fun. Anderson is known best for his "Resident Evil" film series, which is campy and fun if that's what you're looking for. "Pompeii" might not transcend that legacy, but at least it's got a solid cast (this is Harington's first starring blockbuster film role), and what look like some great action set pieces. Hopefully the whole movie ends up being as fun as this trailer is.
"Pompeii's" cast also includes Keifer Sutherland as a visiting Roman Senator, Jared Harris as Cassia's father, Carrie-Anne Moss and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The film is due in theaters on Feb. 21, 2014.
