Elon Musk unveils futuristic 'Hyperloop' transportation system
Elon Musk is at it again. The man behind Paypal and Tesla Motors has come up with yet another in a long line of inventions that may change the way the world works. In a posting on the Tesla Motors blog, Musk outlines his proposal for the high-speed transportation system of the future, something he calls Hyperloop. He detailed the findings in a 57-page concept proposal.
The idea occurred to him after it was announced California would built a high-speed rail system to connect the Northern and Southern parts of the state. "It would be great to have an alternative to flying or driving, but obviously only if it is actually better than flying or driving," he writes.
Hyperloop features pods that would travel on a cushion of air through low-pressure tubes, being propelled by electromagnets. According to Musk, it could transport people from Los Angeles to San Francisco, a nearly 400 mile trip, in 30 minutes at a cost of around $20 per person each way. He also has an option for those who would like to transport their vehicles with them.
Musk notes that this isn't a final plan, instead offering Hyperloop up as an "open source transportation concept" and inviting anyone to contribute to the design process.
