Ben & Jerry's dropping genetically modified ingredients from ice cream
The Ben & Jerry's ice cream company is making the push to get rid of all genetically modified organisms (GMO) in their products. The company has announced the intention to source non-GMO ingredients for all of their varieties by the end of 2013. However, with the complex flavors the company uses in their ice cream, they admit the process will continue into 2014.
Ben & Jerry's says their products are already GMO-free in Europe, while 80% of their ingredients in the United States and Canada meet that standard as well.
In the meantime, the company is also changing their packaging to properly label products containing genetically modified ingredients, a task they says will also take them into 2014.
Ben & Jerry's plans to publicly update their status as they go through the process of switching to non-GMO ingredients and have set up a website to track their progress.
