Wrong Miss Universe Canada crowned after scoring typo
When Denise Garrido was announced as the winner of the 2013 Miss Universe Canada pageant, on May 25, she was genuinely shocked and excited. However, 24 hours later the circumstances had changed.
When officials were validating the scoring results the next day, they discovered a typo in the top five entries "which significantly impacted the final results of the competition," according the organization. They say it was human error that led to the typo, and that Garrido was actually the third runner up.
The true winner was Riza Santos, who was originally announced as first runner up. The two appeared together on CNN to discuss the outcome of the pageant, their first time speaking since the crowning.
Garrido feels bad about taking away the winning moment from Santos, but says "At the same time, Riza, I am glad that we kind of share this bonding experience." Likewise, Santos doesn't feel like she missed out on much by not being crowned during the pageant. "After Denise was crowned I was disappointed, because I felt like I did well in the competition, but I know Denise as a person and I was happy for her genuinely," she says. The two have known each other through the pageant circuit a couple of years.
Riza also thanks Denise for her graciousness during the ordeal, adding, "I've always known you to be a person of integrity and just a respectful, positive person."
Now Santos will move on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. The exact date and venue have yet to be announced.
