Ted Nugent's brother Jeffrey Nugent wants expanded gun background checks
The Motor City Madman Ted Nugent has a new opponent in his fight against expanded background checks for firearms purchases. Jeffrey Nugent, the former president of Revlon and Ted's brother, penned an op-ed piece for the Washington Post.
In the article, Jeffrey says he's a member of the National Rifle Association, as is his brother, and he is also a former officer of the U.S. Army. Jeffrey says that while he agrees with his brother that the constitutional right to bear arms should not be undermined, he supports "expanded and improved" background checks for anyone trying to purchase a gun.
Jeffrey notes that a convicted felon can purchase a weapon from a gun show or private dealer, bypassing the background check that's in place, and he believes that is a loophole that should be closed. He compares the situation to trying to drive or purchase a car without a driver's license.
Ted disagrees with his brother's opinion, and says as much in his own article for Newsmax. According to Ted, "paroled thugs or bug-eyed psychotics" don't care about any laws in place. "The bold and ugly reality is that they will always gain access to a weapon," he says. Ted also states his belief that if new laws pass, the only ones who will follow them are "law-abiding folks who already comply with more than 20,000 federal, state, and local gun laws."
Ted also claims that very few guns purchased from non-Federal Firearms License dealers are used in crimes, citing studies from 1997 and 2001.
The rocker says the real problem is another loophole. "That loophole is the revolving door of our criminal justice system. The vast majority of violent criminals have arrest records many pages long for violent crimes, yet our criminal justice joke pushes them back out on America's streets to commit more crimes against innocent law-abiding citizens."
So, which Nugent do you side with? Should background checks for firearms be expanded, or would such a move solve no problems at all? Sound off below.
