Oprah Winfrey lands Jason Collins for first interview with his family
Oprah Winfrey will sit down with Jason Collins and his family for their first interview together since the NBA center came out as gay in Sports Illustrated's May 6 issue.
Collins and his twin brother, Jarron Collins, also an NBA player, will be joined by their parents, Portia and Paul Collins, as well as Jason's sister-in-law and his aunt, Teri Jackson. In his piece for SI, Collins describes coming out to Jackson, a San Francisco Superior Court judge, before any other member of his family.
"Her reaction surprised me," Collins writes. "'I've known you were gay for years,' she said. From that moment on I was comfortable in my own skin. In her presence I ignored my censor button for the first time. She gave me support. The relief I felt was a sweet release."
Collins is the first openly gay athlete in a major American professional sport.
Oprah's interview with the Collins family airs on "Oprah's Next Chapter" Sun., May 6 at 8 p.m. on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
