'Star Trek Into Darkness' trailer pits Benedict Cumberbatch's terrorist against Chris Pine's Kirk in epic battle
"Star Trek Into Darkness" aims to be one of summer's biggest blockbusters and judging by the epic final trailer released today, it could wind up the biggest.
Highlighting massive action and major emotional stakes, the two and a half minute trailer shows Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) determined to defeat manaical terrorist John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) at any cost. Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Bones (Karl Urban), Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) also feature prominently, while we get a fleeting glimpse of new character Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) unleashing a blood-curdling scream.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" arrives four years after 2009's "Star Trek" reboot from director JJ Abrams set franchise records at the worldwide box office, and it wouldn't be surprising to see this follow-up -- also directed by Abrams (who soon takes over "Star Wars") -- break those records.
In addition to the trailer, Paramount has released a new character poster spotlighting Pine's heroic turn.
Also check out the character posters for Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" hits IMAX theaters on May 15 and opens nationwide May 17.
