Wayne Newton's exotic animals sold for less than $100 each

A bankruptcy court judge in Nevada gave approval to sell off 280 exotic animals from a collection assembled by singer Wayne Newton. The sale of the animals are part of an attempt to offload the Casa de Shenandoah property, once Newton's home. The collection of animals sold to a wildlife center in Oregon for $27,300, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

That averages out to less than $100 per animal. Included in the collection were penguins, two-fingered sloths, and lovebirds. The selling price represents a steep drop off in price for exotic animals. Records for the estate show a single penguin purchased in 2010 for $10,500, whereas today you can get one for as little as $1,000, the Zoological Wildlife Conservation Center and Sloth Captive Husbandry Research Center in Oregon says.

The transfer of the animals is expected to be complete by June. It was just a year and a half ago that Newton was planning to turn Casa de Shenandoah into a tourist attraction, that included a museum, a tour of the main house, and the ability to interact with his collection of animals.
