'Star Trek Into Darkness' international trailer brings war to Starfleet
Thursday brings the longest trailer yet for "Star Trek Into Darkness." It shows the film's villain (Benedict Cumberbatch) declaring war on Starfleet, an organization he once belonged to. Of course Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) knows he must be stopped, and assembles his team to go after the man.
The big reveal of the trailer is the woman who will be Kirk's love interest, Dr. Carol Marcus. Marcus, played by British actress Alice Eve, was first introduced in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and also happens to be the mother of Kirk's only known child. So the links between "Into Darkness" and "Wrath of Khan" continue to grow.
Officially, Cumberbatch's villain is known as John Harrison, however speculation has been running rampant that the character is, in fact, Khan. So much of the movie has been kept tightly under wraps, that if Cumberbatch turns out to be the well-known villain, it's become one of Hollywood's best kept secrets.
The trailer also brings the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise back together. They even throw in a little banter between Kirk and Spock (Zachary Quinto). Nothing from Simon Pegg's Scotty yet, though.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" lands in theaters May 17.
