Judge Judy's son Adam Levy accused of sabotaging rape case
Adam Levy, a district attorney in New York and the son of Judge Judy Sheindlin, is accused of interfering with a rape investigation in Putnam County. Levy's trainer, 35-year-old Alexandru Hossu, is charged with raping a then 12-year-old girl twice in 2010. Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith says Hossu, a Romanian, is in the country illegally with a work visa that expired 12 years ago.
Levy is recused from the investigation into the allegations against Hossu, and tells the Associated Press, "My office acted properly in every aspect of the investigation."
But Sheriff Smith claims it was not Levy who recused himself, but an assistant DA who made the decision. "He is apparently trying to influence and affect the investigation, which could be perceived as an ethical violation of his official duties and perhaps even as an attempt to undermine it," Smith says of Levy.
Smith has also requested a federal investigation that could implicate Levy as having "harbored, shielded, aided or abetted" Hossu. Levy says he was unaware of Hossu's immigration status, and notes that his family has known Hossu for many years.
The sheriff also believes Levy's public comments on the case are improper. "In my view, Mr. Levy's comments and actions would seem to suggest that, if he could have his own way, Mr. Hossu would never have been brought to justice for his crime," says Smith. He claims Levy is attempting to distract the public from the true nature of the case, which he calls "the vicious rape of a little girl by a man whom [Levy] housed and hired as his personal fitness trainer."
Judge Judy issued a statement through her rep saying, "The sole focus of this story should be the investigation as to whether a young girl was the victim of a very serious crime."
