'Game of Thrones' star Maisie Williams reveals how her Patrick Stewart Funny or Die video came about
Funny or Die couldn't let a major event like the 2012 London Olympics pass without releasing a hilarious, celebrity-filled video. No, the comedy website put together a sketch called "The Olympic Ticket Scalper" that teamed Patrick Stewart with "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams as they tricked the likes of of Ryan Lochte and Simon Pegg.
Zap2it recently participated in a roundtable interview with Williams while she was promoting Season 3 of "Game of Thrones" and asked her how the video came to be. It turns out that Funny or Die reached out to her to play the role of Scraggly Sue, and she agreed before she ever found out she'd be working with Stewart.
"They phoned up and they said, 'We'd like to do a Funny or Die,' and that was really cool because I had heard of it and I was really excited," she said. "We didn't know much about it and we didn't know who else was going to be in it, just got the little script, and it was great because it was around the Olympics and I really loved the little story. It made me laugh, just reading the script."
As for when she found out from her mother that Stewart would also be starring in the short, Williams said her initial response was, "Who is that?" "Then I went on IMDb -- no, no, no, I know who he is, I just didn't have the face to the name -- and then I was like, 'Wow. Oh man.' But yeah, such a nice guy," she explained.
It turns out that Stewart watches "Game of Thrones" and is a fan of the series. "We had a really good day and it was a nice sunny day in London. It was a really great experience and nice to be asked. It was kind of odd, and then I went back to filming on 'Game of Thrones' because it was kind of in between," Williams said.
Just like fans on the Internet have loved the video, so to have Williams' "Game of Thrones" peers. "Lots of the directors have seen it, lots of the American people on the crew at seen it, which is cool, and then Joe [Dempsie, who plays Gendry] was like, 'What are they talking about?' And I was like, 'I did a Funny or Die,' and he was like, 'That's really cool.' Yeah. And lots of my friends are like, 'Funny or Die, that's amazing. You did one of those!' I had a really, really good time and they said, 'We'd have you back maybe one day,' so that will be cool to do another one because I had fun."
When Williams' cinnamon challenge video got brought up as well, her "Game of Thrones" costar Isaac Hemstead-Wright admitted that he hadn't heard of this one of Williams' antics. "I did the cinnamon challenge and it went viral," she admitted with a sight, causing everyone in attendance to burst out laughing. "It was on like a private Facebook account and I don't know how it kind of got out, but it was funny and it wasn't doing any harm. Yeah. It's disgusting."
