Ex-NBA player Renaldo Balkman banned in Philippines after 'choking' incident
The Philipines Basketball Association has banned a former NBA player for grabbing a team mate around the neck during a game. Renaldo Balkman, who played in the NBA for six years, assaulted team mate Arwind Santos, who was trying to stop him from going after the referee over a decision, Reuters reports.
In addition to the ban, Balkman has been fined the equivalent of $6,100. In a statement, PBA commissioner Chito Salud cited Balkman's history in the game, including a past head-butting incident, when announcing the decision. "I do encourage passion for the game," Salud says, "but I also want to firmly instill a culture of accountability among our players."
In the end, Balkman's team lost the game to the Alaska Aces. The statement does not clarify whether the ban is temporary or permanent. Balkman last played in the NBA as a member of the New York Knicks in 2012.
