'Star Wars' spinoff movies confirmed by Disney in addition to Episodes 7, 8 and 9

star-wars-episode-7-peter-mayhew-chewbacca.jpgGet ready for a "Star Wars" bonanza over the next few years, now that Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed to CNBC that spinoff movies focused on individual characters are in the works in addition to the already announced Episodes VII, VIII and IX.

"I can confirm that in fact we are working on a few standalone films," Iger tells CNBC. "Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great 'Star Wars' characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX roughly over a six year period of time starting in 2015 but there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too."

Iger wouldn't reveal which characters will be involved -- deferring to Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and her team to "provide all the details when they're ready" -- but reports recently leaked that Yoda is a prime contender. Iger also noted that both Kasdan (the writer of "The Empire Strikes Back") and Kinberg ("X-Men: Days of Future Past") are working with director JJ Abrams as consultants on "Star Wars VII."
