John Mara arrested: Giants owner's nephew charged with assault
After a two month investigation, 22-year-old John Mara has been arrested. The nephew of the New York Giants owner of the same name finally surrendered to police officers after being charged with beating a man with a bottle at a New Year's Eve party.
According to the story, Mara hit another man attending a party on Connecticut's Fairfield Beach Road over the head with a bottle and nearly killed him. Police say the victim suffered "serious, life-threatening injuries that required immediate surgery." The incident happened not far from Fairfield University.
Now Mara has been charged with first-degree assault and breach of the peace. He was freed from jail after posting a $150,000 bail, but is due in court on March 8. According to his lawyer William Dow, Mara plans to plead not guilty.
"He intends to address the charges in court. We're confident that a jury will find him not guilty," Dow tells USA Today.
