Hitler's food taster Margot Woelk reveals Fuhrer's extreme vegetarian diet

Margot Woelk, 95, served as one of Adolf Hitler's food testers during World War II. The German citizen was brought to his Eastern Front headquarters in Poland after her husband was sent off to war, and has now come forward to talk about his extreme eating habits.

"Between 11 and 12 o'clock, we had to taste the food, and only after all of us had tried it was it driven to the headquarters by the SS," Woelk tells The Telegraph. "It was all vegetarian, the most delicious fresh things, from asparagus to peppers and peas, served with rice and salads. It was all arranged on one plate, just as it was served to him. There was no meat and I do not remember any fish."

She continues, "Of course I was afraid. If it had been poisoned I would not be here today. We were forced to eat it, we had no choice."

Fortunately Woelk wasn't poisoned, and was smuggled out of his "Wolf's Lair" camp prior to it falling to the Russians. A sympathetic soldier put her "on Goebbels's train" and sent her back to Berlin, where she later reunited with her husband Kurt. The other women Woelk worked with are thought to have been shot by the Russians.
