Boxer Omar Henry dies at 25 after fight of his life against cancer

Welterweight boxer Omar Henry has died of gall bladder cancer, just one week short of his 26th birthday. Henry has a 12-0-1 welterweight record and hoped to one day become the undisputed champion of his class.

Omar had a fight scheduled for Showtime Nov. 16 but visited the doctor a few days before the match because he was not feeling well. The 25-year-old athlete was diagnosed with Stage 4 gall bladder cancer, and would only live for a matter of weeks.

Yahoo Sports reports Henry posted on Facebook in January that he hoped to make it to see 26. "I got exactly less than 1 month left until my 26th birthday February 8." Henry wrote. "Hopefully I live to see it." He shared that he was receiving support and prayers from all over the world and vowed to continue to fight "till I knock this sickness out."

Henry was a four-time Texas Golden Gloves champion and boasted an amateur boxing record of 60-5. In an interview given after his diagnosis, he philosophized about the timing of this tragic turn of events. "I was about to headline Showtime at 25-years-old, in the prime of my career," said Henry. "Now, I could literally be dead tomorrow, and this is the scariest thing I can think of. God has a purpose, and we can't question God."
